Short answer: There is no proven universal winner across current Linux distributions. In a controlled Fedora 31 comparison published in 2019, LXDE used the least memory, followed by LXQt and Xfce. Those results are a historical snapshot of one setup—not a current ranking for every Linux PC. If RAM is tight, compare those environments on your own distribution using the same measurement method and the applications you actually use.

What the available comparisons found

The most directly comparable figures come from Troy Dawson’s Fedora Magazine test, published December 4, 2019. He ran Fedora 31 Live images in separate KVM virtual machines, each with one CPU and 4 GB of RAM. The default desktops were left in place, three terminal windows were opened, and memory was recorded after five minutes.

Desktop Reported used memory
LXDE 318 MB
LXQt 391 MB
Xfce 448 MB
MATE 465 MB
GNOME 612 MB
Cinnamon 624 MB
KDE 733 MB

These are the reported readings for that Fedora 31 virtual-machine setup, not guarantees for other releases or configurations. Services and desktop defaults affect the result; Dawson cautioned that changing the included services or features changes memory use. Read the Fedora Magazine test and its setup.

An older Phoronix test, published in 2010, found LXDE using about 30 MB less RAM than Xfce. It ran Ubuntu 10.04-era development software on a Samsung NC10 netbook with 2 GB of RAM, comparing LXDE 0.5, GNOME 2.29.91, KDE SC 4.4.1, and Xfce 4.6.1. Phoronix noted that Ubuntu package defaults differed, so the comparison was not perfectly controlled. It is useful as historical context, not as evidence about today’s desktops. See the Phoronix test.

How to choose a low-memory desktop

If a machine has limited RAM, LXDE, LXQt, and Xfce are sensible environments to compare first. The Fedora test put LXDE lowest, but it does not establish that LXDE will be the lightest choice on your distribution, with your settings and applications.

  • Start with the desktop your distribution supports well. Its default services, settings, and included applications can change the total more than the desktop name alone suggests.
  • Try a live session or separate test install. Use the same machine and distribution where possible, and keep the session type, extensions, services, and startup programs consistent.
  • Judge responsiveness under your actual workload. A browser with many tabs, mail, documents, and background tasks can matter more than the desktop’s idle footprint.
  • Balance memory use with usability. A small idle reading is not the only consideration; choose a desktop that has the features and workflow you need.

How to measure RAM fairly

A memory figure is only meaningful when you know what the tool counted. Linux reports can treat cache and buffers differently: a displayed “used” total may include cached data, while another figure excludes it. Choose one metric and use it for every desktop rather than comparing unlike totals. Numix explains this accounting issue and recommends holding hardware and session conditions steady. Read Numix’s measurement guidance.

  1. Keep the test conditions alike. Use the same hardware allocation, distribution release, session type, display settings, and background services as far as practical.
  2. Start each session the same way. Log in, open the same applications, and allow startup activity to settle before taking a reading. Dawson’s Fedora test used a five-minute wait.
  3. Record the metric and workload. Note the tool and value you report, whether cache is included, what applications are open, and when the reading was taken.
  4. Compare idle and working sessions. Idle use helps compare background overhead; a realistic workload shows whether the difference matters during normal use.

GNOME System Monitor’s Resources tab reports the computer’s RAM use, and GNOME notes that automatically started background processes are normal. It is a monitoring aid, not an independent benchmark of desktop environments. See GNOME’s System Monitor help.

Do not confuse disk space with RAM

Debian’s Bookworm task-size figures describe installed disk space, not memory used while a desktop is running. For example, Debian lists Xfce at 2509 MB and KDE Plasma at 4584 MB of task installation size. Those values cannot tell you which desktop uses less RAM. See Debian’s Bookworm task disk-space table.

What can be concluded today

The cited comparisons do not establish a current, cross-distribution winner. The Fedora results are from 2019, the Phoronix comparison is from 2010, and the newer Numix material offers measurement guidance rather than a measured ranking. Treat LXDE, LXQt, and Xfce as candidates to test—not as a guaranteed ordering—and base the decision on consistent measurements with your normal applications.
