VS Code is the better fit when you want to combine several project folders in one workspace. IntelliJ IDEA is a better fit when related components belong together as modules, or when you want to keep distinct projects open using JetBrains’ Multi-Project Workspace plugin or separate windows. The key distinction is whether you mean folders gathered into one workspace or independent projects kept open at the same time. The official documentation describes these workflows, but does not establish a general winner for speed or resource use.
First decide what “multiple projects” means
Two different arrangements can fit that description:
- One workspace with multiple folders: You see and work across several folders within one editing context. VS Code’s multi-root workspace is designed for this.
- Several projects open simultaneously: You keep distinct projects available, either together in one frame or in separate windows. IntelliJ IDEA supports separate windows and offers a one-frame option through a plugin.
If the codebases are parts of one application and share configuration, a third arrangement may be more natural: organize them as modules within one IntelliJ IDEA project.
How VS Code handles multiple folders
Use a multi-root workspace
In VS Code, choose File > Add Folder to Workspace to add another folder. Each folder appears as a root in the Explorer, and search can be scoped to a particular root. This works well when, for example, you want a product’s source folder and its documentation available together. See the VS Code multi-root workspaces documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Understand the settings scope
A multi-root workspace can combine settings saved with individual folders and workspace-wide settings saved in a .code-workspace file. Not every setting is independent for every root: settings that affect the editor as a whole, such as its UI layout, cannot be configured separately per folder. This makes the arrangement useful when folders need some distinct resource settings but should share one editing context.
How IntelliJ IDEA handles related and distinct projects
Use modules when components belong together
An IntelliJ IDEA project is a top-level container for source code, tests, libraries, SDKs, build instructions, and settings. It can contain one or more modules, with shared project configuration such as SDKs, code style, and inspections. When multiple components belong to one application and share configuration, modules may represent their relationship more accurately than treating each component as an unrelated project. Details are in JetBrains’ projects documentation.

Use the Multi-Project Workspace plugin for one frame
For distinct projects that you want to view in a single IntelliJ IDEA frame, JetBrains documents the Multi-Project Workspace plugin. It is intended for workflows that include multiple Git repositories, microservices, or a monorepo. The workspace does not change the original projects’ configuration or locations; it can expose repositories and build controls, and lets you unload projects that you are not currently using. You must install and enable the plugin to use this workflow. See JetBrains’ workspace documentation.
Use separate windows for independent projects
If you prefer to keep projects visually separate, IntelliJ IDEA lets you choose whether a newly opened project opens in a new window, replaces the current project, or prompts you. You can also reopen multiple projects at startup and switch among their windows. JetBrains describes these options in its project opening and closing documentation.

Choose by the workflow you need
| Your need | Best-documented fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Bring several related or adjacent folders into one workspace | VS Code | Multi-root workspaces gather folders, support searches scoped to a root, and combine folder-level with workspace-wide settings. |
| Model components as modules with shared project configuration | IntelliJ IDEA | A project can contain modules and shared settings such as SDKs, code style, and inspections. |
| See distinct IntelliJ IDEA projects in one frame | IntelliJ IDEA with Multi-Project Workspace plugin | The plugin supports multiple projects in one workspace and must be installed and enabled. |
| Keep projects open in separate windows | IntelliJ IDEA | Its project-opening options include new-window behavior and reopening multiple projects at startup. |
| Pick based on measured speed or memory use | No supported winner | The cited official documentation describes features, not controlled comparative benchmarks. |
What this comparison does—and does not—establish
This is a comparison of documented project-management workflows, not a hands-on performance test. The IntelliJ IDEA documentation pages identify version 2026.2; the VS Code multi-root page does not identify a version in the available documentation. The cited sources therefore support choosing based on workspace organization and window behavior, but they do not support claims that either product is faster, uses less memory, or is more productive overall.
