For a supported 5G iPhone and plan, start with 5G Auto for Apple’s battery-conscious balance of 5G access and LTE, and enable Wi-Fi Calling if you need calls in places with weak cellular service and your carrier supports it. Low Data Mode limits background data use; it does not boost reception. The settings available to you depend on your iPhone, iOS version, carrier, region, and line setup.
Where to find iPhone cellular settings
Open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options, then choose Voice & Data or Data Mode. Depending on your region, the menu may be called Mobile Data. With Dual SIM, select the relevant line first. Menu labels and available choices can vary by model, iOS version, carrier, and region. See Apple’s iPhone cellular settings guide.
Choose the right Voice & Data mode
On iPhone 12 models and later with a 5G data plan, Apple’s 5G choices are 5G Auto, 5G On, and LTE. They determine network use, not whether your carrier has coverage in a particular place. Apple describes 5G Auto as Smart Data mode: iPhone switches to LTE when 5G does not provide a noticeably better experience. 5G On uses 5G whenever it is available and may reduce battery life; LTE keeps the phone on LTE even where 5G is available. 5G Auto is not a guaranteed signal-strength fix or a promise of longer battery life in every situation. If your priority is battery-conscious network selection, it is Apple’s balanced option; if 5G is unavailable, changing this mode cannot create coverage.

Use Wi-Fi Calling for calls where cellular service is weak
Wi-Fi Calling is the setting most directly relevant to making calls in a low-signal location. When supported by your carrier and region, it lets you make and receive calls over Wi-Fi when cellular signal is low. Availability and setup differ by carrier; activation may ask you to confirm an address for emergency services. Follow Apple’s Make calls using Wi-Fi on iPhone instructions and check carrier requirements if the option is missing.
Emergency calling depends on what networks are available. Apple says emergency calls use cellular service when available. If cellular service is unavailable and Wi-Fi Calling is enabled, an emergency call may use Wi-Fi and location information.

Limit cellular data without mistaking it for a signal setting
Low Data Mode
Choose Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Data Mode > Low Data Mode, where those labels are available. Apple says this mode pauses automatic updates and background tasks when iPhone is not connected to Wi-Fi, helping reduce cellular data use. It controls data activity, not reception or call reliability. Compare Apple’s Use Low Data Mode on your iPhone and iPad guidance.
Per-app cellular access and usage
In Settings > Cellular, review the app list and turn cellular access off for apps that should use Wi-Fi only for that service. You can also inspect the data usage shown there. For the most accurate current-period usage, Apple recommends checking with your carrier, whose records may differ from the phone’s displayed figures. See the cellular settings guide.

Wi-Fi Assist
Wi-Fi Assist can switch to cellular data when Wi-Fi connectivity is poor, helping internet access continue but potentially consuming cellular data and incurring plan charges. It does not strengthen cellular reception. Review or turn it off at Settings > Cellular by scrolling to Wi-Fi Assist, if the option is present. Apple’s explanation is in About Wi-Fi Assist.
Manage roaming before you travel
Turning off Data Roaming is Apple’s suggested way to avoid roaming data charges. It can also limit data connectivity while you’re away from your carrier’s network. Before a trip, ask your carrier about international plan options or consider a travel eSIM, confirming that the carrier and region support the option you plan to use. Understand cellular data with Dual SIM
iPhone uses one cellular data network at a time. With two lines, Allow Cellular Data Switching can let a voice-only line use data during a call, subject to carrier and availability limits. If 5G or a cellular option is missing
- Check that your iPhone model supports 5G, your plan includes 5G, and your carrier and location have 5G service.
- If service remains unavailable, Apple suggests turning Airplane Mode on and off once, then contacting your carrier if the problem continues.
- If an option such as 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi Calling, or roaming is absent, its availability may depend on the iPhone, iOS version, carrier, region, or selected line. Check Apple’s 5G guidance or the relevant carrier requirements rather than assuming every iPhone shows the same controls.
