First make the controls you plan to use easy to reach; then keep aperture on its ƒ/1.8 default unless a scene gives you a reason to choose more light or more depth. Use shutter speed for deliberate motion, white balance for a chosen color result, and the histogram to inspect exposure. Photographic Styles texture and grain are optional creative finishing touches.
1. Put the controls you use within reach
In Camera, frequently used controls can be added to the tools above the viewfinder, or opened through Camera Controls. Apple Support lists aperture, shutter speed, white balance, and histogram among the available tools. 2. Keep the Main camera at ƒ/1.8 until you have a reason to change it
The Main camera offers four manual aperture choices. Apple describes ƒ/1.8 as the default balance between low-light performance and depth of field. For ordinary shooting, that is a sensible place to start; change it to address the scene rather than treating one value as universally best. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro product page

These are Apple’s intended descriptions, not guarantees for every composition. Apple also claims around 50 percent better low-light performance at ƒ/1.48; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independent test result. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro product page

3. Adjust shutter speed when motion matters
Shutter speed is worth changing when you want to control how motion appears: a faster choice can help capture fast action, while a slower one can create motion blur. The right setting depends on the subject and effect you want, so there is no useful universal number to copy for every scene. In Camera, open the manual controls and drag the shutter-speed slider. If you are not deliberately controlling motion, leave the camera to select it automatically. Apple’s September 2026 announcement

4. Set white balance for a deliberate color result
White balance changes how the camera renders color. Adjust it when you want a particular color result; otherwise, automatic white balance avoids making you choose a value for every lighting situation. Apple Support says to open the manual controls and tap the white-balance value you want. Manual white balance is available in Photo, Video, Cinematic, Slo-mo, and Time-Lapse; Apple does not specify one best value for all lighting. Apple Support’s advanced camera tools guide
5. Use the histogram as an exposure aid
The histogram lets you inspect exposure across the frame while composing. Open Camera Controls and choose Histogram, or add Histogram to the tools above the viewfinder. Read it as a visual aid—not a target shape that every well-exposed photo must match. Apple Support’s advanced camera tools guide

6. Treat Photographic Styles as a creative choice
Photographic Styles 3 lets you adjust tone and color and adds texture and grain controls. Texture can soften skin detail or contribute to a film look. Preview the result and choose what suits the image: these are subjective appearance choices, and Apple says styles can be adjusted or reversed. Apple says the camera normally selects aperture, shutter speed, and white balance automatically; manual settings are options for people who want more control over a specific result. The practical trade-off is convenience versus direct intervention: automatic choices suit routine shooting, while manual choices let you steer light, motion, or color.
