8x CSAA usually offers the better performance-to-image-quality balance on compatible older NVIDIA hardware. Its performance is generally in the same class as 4x MSAA because 8x CSAA uses four full color/depth/stencil samples plus eight coverage samples, rather than eight complete multisamples. Choose 4x MSAA when compatibility, predictable behavior, or artifact-free rendering matters more.
The short answer
| Criterion | Usually preferable | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Average FPS | 8x CSAA, or a tie | Its four full samples keep the workload near 4x MSAA. |
| Performance per apparent edge quality | 8x CSAA | Additional coverage samples can smooth polygon edges without the storage cost of eight full samples. |
| Compatibility and predictability | 4x MSAA | It is the more widely supported conventional mode. |
| Absolute conventional sample quality | 8x MSAA | It uses eight complete multisample locations, where the game supports it efficiently. |
| Modern relevance | Neither is a universal recommendation | CSAA is mainly a legacy NVIDIA feature; newer games commonly use TAA, SMAA, FXAA, DLAA, DLSS, or FSR. |
NVIDIA’s technical documentation says 8x CSAA can perform similarly to, or sometimes identically to, 4x MSAA. That is an architectural expectation, not a guaranteed frame-rate result for every game, driver, resolution, or GPU. See NVIDIA’s CSAA technical tutorial.
What 4x MSAA actually does
Multisample anti-aliasing (MSAA) evaluates polygon coverage at several locations inside each pixel. It normally shades a pixel’s color once while storing coverage and depth/stencil information for multiple sample positions. That makes it less expensive than rendering a full supersampled image at four times the resolution.
4x MSAA primarily smooths geometric polygon edges: building outlines, roads, rails, wires, and other opaque meshes. It does not automatically fix every type of aliasing. Alpha-tested foliage, chain-link fences, hair, specular highlights, shader patterns, and temporal shimmer can remain jagged or flicker. Cost depends on the engine, resolution, render-target format, memory bandwidth, and whether the GPU is limited by shaders or geometry rather than multisample storage.

What 8x CSAA means
Coverage Sampled Anti-Aliasing (CSAA) separates coverage information from the full color, depth, and stencil samples. The number in the label therefore is not directly comparable with the number in an MSAA label.
| Mode | Color/depth/stencil samples | Coverage samples |
|---|---|---|
| 8x CSAA | 4 | 8 |
| 8xQ CSAA | 8 | 8 |
| 16x CSAA | 4 | 16 |
| 16xQ CSAA | 8 | 16 |
In plain English, 8x CSAA is not “8x MSAA made faster.” It is an eight-coverage-sample mode built around four complete samples. The extra coverage records require comparatively little storage, which is why NVIDIA describes four-color/depth/stencil CSAA modes as having a cost close to 4x MSAA.
Performance: why 8x CSAA is usually near 4x MSAA
The four full color/depth/stencil samples are the main resource commitment. Adding coverage positions provides finer information about whether a polygon crosses a pixel, but does not require a full color and depth record at every position. On supported hardware, this makes 8x CSAA generally a 4x-MSAA-class setting with more coverage information.
Do not interpret that relationship as a promised FPS increase. Real results vary because:

- The game and driver may resolve CSAA and MSAA differently.
- A renderer may ignore a forced mode or expose only a partial implementation.
- Shader throughput, CPU limits, render-target size, or memory bandwidth may dominate the workload.
- Some games combine MSAA or CSAA with FXAA, transparency anti-aliasing, or another filter.
- Deferred renderers, post-processing chains, and unusual render targets can restrict hardware anti-aliasing.
Average FPS is only one measure. Compare 1% lows and frame times as well: a mode with the same average can feel worse if it causes inconsistent frame delivery. NVIDIA’s older Black Ops II settings guide described 16x CSAA as performing more like 4x MSAA while appearing similar to 8x MSAA in that particular game. That example illustrates the design goal, not a universal benchmark.
Image quality: where each mode helps
Opaque polygon edges
8x CSAA can provide finer coverage than 4x MSAA, so diagonal edges and thin opaque geometry may look smoother at a similar performance cost. Wires, railings, distant building outlines, and narrow object silhouettes are common places to notice a difference.
Compared with 8x MSAA
8x MSAA stores eight conventional multisample positions, while standard 8x CSAA stores four complete samples and eight coverage samples. CSAA may approach the appearance of a higher MSAA level on suitable geometry, but it is not equivalent. Overlapping or subpixel geometry, sample patterns, resolve behavior, and the game’s implementation can produce visible differences. NVIDIA’s claims that CSAA can rival higher MSAA levels are vendor characterizations rather than guarantees for every scene.
Foliage and alpha-tested textures
Leaves, fences, hair, and other alpha-tested textures often remain jagged or shimmer with either setting. Standard MSAA and CSAA primarily operate on polygon coverage; they do not automatically supersample the texture’s alpha test or remove temporal shader aliasing. NVIDIA’s Black Ops II guide specifically noted persistent jagged foliage in comparisons. Transparency anti-aliasing also operates at the color/depth/stencil resolution, not at CSAA’s higher coverage resolution, so 8x CSAA does not provide eight-sample-quality transparency treatment by itself.

Motion and shader aliasing
Static screenshots can make CSAA look excellent while camera movement still reveals crawling edges or shimmering detail. Specular highlights, procedural patterns, and post-process effects may need TAA, SMAA, supersampling, or another technique instead.
Which setting should you use?
Use 8x CSAA when
- Your older NVIDIA GPU and the game actually support the mode.
- You want more edge coverage than 4x MSAA without paying the usual cost of 8x MSAA.
- A repeatable visual test shows fewer jaggies and no artifacts.
- The game’s renderer handles the mode natively or the driver profile applies it correctly.
Use 4x MSAA when
- CSAA is unavailable, ignored, unstable, or produces rendering errors.
- You need the broadest compatibility and the simplest behavior.
- The game’s image is dominated by transparency, foliage, or shader aliasing that CSAA does not improve.
- You are using hardware or an API without a meaningful CSAA path.
Use 8x MSAA or another technique when
Choose 8x MSAA if the game’s conventional implementation is visibly better and your GPU has the headroom. In modern deferred-rendered titles, TAA may reduce temporal shimmer more effectively, while FXAA or SMAA can be a cheaper fallback. Supersampling or NVIDIA DSR can improve both geometric and texture aliasing, but costs substantially more.
Compatibility and driver behavior
NVIDIA introduced CSAA with the GeForce 8 generation. The historical support context is documented in NVIDIA’s SDK samples and G80 programming guide. CSAA is NVIDIA-specific rather than a cross-vendor standard; AMD used different coverage-sampling approaches, including EQAA.
Older games may expose CSAA in their own menus, while others require a driver profile or Control Panel setting. A visible driver option does not prove that the game accepted it. Deferred rendering, incompatible APIs, post-processing, shared depth buffers, partial depth clears, or independently updated color and depth targets can reduce quality or invalidate coverage information. NVIDIA’s CSAA documentation warns about these implementation constraints.

Current NVIDIA software may still show legacy anti-aliasing controls for older applications, but CSAA is not a mainstream option on current game engines. Newer titles generally use temporal or post-process methods instead. Do not assume that every modern GPU or driver still exposes or honors a CSAA mode merely because an old guide mentions it. NVIDIA’s current legacy-settings discussion is available in the NVIDIA application documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to test 4x MSAA versus 8x CSAA
- Keep resolution, graphics preset, textures, shadows, view distance, post-processing, and anisotropic filtering identical.
- Disable adaptive resolution, dynamic quality, frame caps, and unrelated driver enhancements.
- Use the same save point, camera path, and benchmark duration for both runs.
- Repeat each run to reduce variation from shader compilation, asset streaming, and CPU scheduling.
- Record average FPS, 1% lows, frame times, GPU utilization, and VRAM usage.
- Capture native-resolution screenshots and magnified crops of thin geometry, distant edges, and foliage.
- Watch a camera pan or traversal, not just a still image, for shimmer, crawling edges, blur, and flicker.
- Document the GPU, driver version, game version, API, resolution, and exact anti-aliasing settings.
If the two modes measure within normal run-to-run variance, choose based on visible quality and stability rather than a nominal “8x” label.
Alternatives on supported NVIDIA hardware
8xQ CSAA
8xQ CSAA uses eight color/depth/stencil samples and eight coverage samples, so it is more expensive than standard 8x CSAA and should not be treated as the same mode.
MFAA
NVIDIA’s Multi-Frame Sampled Anti-Aliasing reuses temporal sample patterns. NVIDIA describes 2x MSAA plus MFAA as approximately comparable to 4x MSAA, and 4x MSAA plus MFAA as approximately comparable to 8x MSAA in supported games and hardware. It is not a universal CSAA replacement; compatibility and temporal stability are required. See NVIDIA’s MFAA overview and configuration guidance.

FXAA and SMAA
FXAA is inexpensive and broadly compatible but can soften the image; NVIDIA positions it as having less performance impact than heavier anti-aliasing settings in its Control Panel reference. SMAA is often sharper, but both are post-process methods rather than multisample coverage techniques.
TAA and supersampling
TAA often handles temporal shimmer and foliage better, at the risk of ghosting or blur. Supersampling and DSR can address a wider range of aliasing, but consume considerably more GPU performance.
Final recommendation
If both settings work correctly on a compatible legacy NVIDIA card, start with 8x CSAA. It normally costs about as much as 4x MSAA while supplying more coverage information and potentially smoother opaque edges. Switch to 4x MSAA when CSAA is unsupported, ignored, artifact-prone, or visibly unhelpful in the game you are playing. Neither setting should be expected to solve foliage, transparency, or temporal aliasing on its own.
