The best freelance website depends on how you want to find clients: pitch on projects, sell a defined service, apply to a curated network, browse job listings, or use a portfolio to attract inquiries. These 29 options cover those different approaches; they are a shortlist, not a ranking based on independent testing.

Start with one or two sites that fit your skills and preferred way of working. Before committing, check current fees, availability in your country, payment terms, and whether a listing is actually freelance work.

How the main types of freelance websites work

  • Open marketplaces: Browse projects and pitch clients, or offer a defined service. You compete with other freelancers for work.
  • Vetted networks: Apply to join a screened pool, then pursue matching opportunities. Entry requirements can make these a better fit for experienced specialists.
  • Job boards and aggregators: Search listings and apply elsewhere or through the employer’s process. A listing site may not manage contracts or payments.
  • Portfolio platforms: Display work so clients can discover or contact you. A portfolio can support lead generation, but it does not guarantee inquiries.
  • Specialist services: Focus on a trade, industry, or location. Their narrower scope can help the right freelancer while limiting who can use them.

General freelance marketplaces

These are options for freelancers who want a broad client pool, but they differ in how work is sold and won.

Fiverr

Publish predefined services with a clear scope and price. This model suits repeatable offers that can be described up front; it is less centered on pitching for individually posted projects.

Upwork

Respond to client projects with proposals, take hourly or fixed-price contracts, or offer pre-scoped services. It can suit freelancers willing to pitch actively and pursue ongoing client relationships.

Freelancer.com

Compete for projects through bids, with contests as another route. Consider how much unpaid proposal or contest work you are willing to do.

Guru

A broad marketplace that, according to its listing description, includes SafePay and paid membership tiers. Review the current terms and whether a paid tier makes sense for your expected workload.

PeoplePerHour

Offers proposals and hourly or project-based work. Its reported fee structure depends on a freelancer’s lifetime billing with a buyer, so check the current fee schedule before pricing a job.

Contra

Combines portfolio and client-work features and positions itself around commission-free work. Commission-free does not necessarily mean cost-free: check for client, payment-processing, or plan charges.

Vetted talent networks

These networks screen applicants or curate talent. Check the selection process, specialties, location eligibility, and whether the available roles match your experience before investing time in an application.

Toptal

A screened network for experienced specialists, including technical, finance, design, and product or project professionals.

Flexiple

Curated matching focused on web and mobile development and UI/UX roles.

Arc

Connects screened technical and digital talent with contract and remote opportunities.

Gun.io

Focuses on vetted software and engineering work.

Codeable

A specialist network for WordPress professionals, rather than a general-purpose marketplace.

Gigster

Organizes technical projects through teams and project management, which may suit clients seeking a managed delivery arrangement more than an individual one-off hire.

Braintrust

A curated talent marketplace with an emphasis on experienced professionals and enterprise work.

Job boards and aggregators

These sites help you discover openings, but their listings can include employee roles as well as freelance contracts. Confirm the engagement type, hiring party, application destination, and payment arrangement for each opportunity.

Jooble

An aggregator that collects job listings. Follow each result to its original source and verify that the role is current and freelance before applying.

SimplyHired

A job-search service, not a marketplace that necessarily provides freelancer contracts or payment handling. Check the employer’s own process.

FlexJobs

A paid service with curated remote and flexible-work listings, including some freelance roles. Confirm that a listing fits your preferred contract type before paying for access.

We Work Remotely

A remote-work board that includes some freelance opportunities. Filter or inspect listings carefully because many remote jobs are not freelance contracts.

Wellfound

Useful for discovering startup roles; short-term freelance projects are less central to its focus.

LinkedIn

Combines professional networking, service discovery, and job search. Use it to find prospects or listings, but establish agreements and payment terms with the client directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remote OK

A remote job board. Check each listing’s contract type and terms rather than assuming that remote means freelance.

Creative portfolio and design platforms

These are most relevant when visible examples of your work help clients assess your style. Treat portfolio visibility and paid project opportunities as separate things: one does not ensure the other.

Behance

A portfolio and discovery platform for illustrators, photographers, designers, and animators.

Dribbble

A design portfolio and client-lead platform. Some lead-generation features are paid, so compare their cost with the leads you can realistically pursue.

Editing.services

Focused on writing, editing, and translation. Its reported commission is high, so calculate the net amount you would receive before accepting work.

TaskRabbit

Matches people with local, in-person household and practical services. Availability depends on location; check whether it operates in your city and review current registration and service terms.

SolidGigs

A paid service that curates freelance leads. Paying for access buys access to leads, not a guarantee that a lead will become a client or paid project.

Reedsy

A curated marketplace for publishing professionals, including editors, designers, ghostwriters, marketers, and translators.

How to choose a site that fits your work

  1. Decide how you want to sell. If you can package a repeatable service, consider a gig listing. If you prefer responding to briefs, look at proposal marketplaces. If you have substantial experience, assess a vetted network. If your samples are your strongest selling point, invest in portfolio discovery; if you provide in-person services, check local matching options.
  2. Check fit before applying. Compare the site’s specialties and client types with your skills, seniority, and preferred project size. A narrow network may be more relevant than a general marketplace for a specialist, but only if it accepts your profile and serves your market.
  3. Verify geography and work type. Confirm that you can register and receive payments in your country or city. On job boards and aggregators, verify that the opportunity is freelance, not a remote employee role, and apply through the genuine hiring source.
  4. Calculate the full cost. Include commissions, paid memberships, proposal credits, processing charges, and any registration fee. Use the amount you will actually keep—not the displayed project price—to set a sustainable rate.
  5. Assess payment and contract terms. Find out when payment is released, what happens in a dispute, what work is covered by milestones, and whether the client or platform handles the contract. Platform tools may reduce some friction, but do not remove the need to agree on scope and payment terms.
  6. Start with a manageable test. Choose one or two channels that reach your intended clients, prepare a focused profile or portfolio, and track qualified leads and time spent. Expand only if another platform reaches a distinct audience or type of work.

What do freelance websites charge?

Fees change and may depend on contract, plan, or location. The figures below are reported in Upwork’s 2026 comparison guide, not a guarantee of the terms currently offered to every user. Check the fee displayed for your account and contract before accepting work.

Platform or plan Reported fee or price What to verify
Upwork service fee 0%–15% per contract, as reported in the 2026 guide; the guide says the rate can vary by contract and factors such as supply and demand. Check the exact fee shown for the specific contract. Upwork’s 2026 comparison guide.
Upwork Freelancer Plus $19.99 per month, the plan price reported in the 2026 guide. Confirm the current plan price and benefits before subscribing. Upwork’s 2026 comparison guide.
Fiverr freelancer service fee 20%, as reported by Upwork’s 2026 comparison guide. Confirm Fiverr’s current terms and calculate your net earnings before setting prices. Upwork’s 2026 comparison guide.

These figures are not directly equivalent: one is a contract-dependent fee range, one is a monthly subscription price, and one is a reported service-fee percentage. A useful comparison is the total cost for the kind of work you expect to win, including charges outside the headline commission.

Reduce the risks of finding work online

Before sharing sensitive information or starting a project, verify the client and the work. Agree in writing on deliverables, revisions, deadlines, payment schedule, ownership, and what counts as a completed milestone. Be cautious about requests to pay upfront to access a job, move money for a client, or begin substantial unpaid work.

Online freelance work also carries broader risks than platform fees. An APEC report focused particularly on women online freelance workers in the APEC context discusses concerns including delayed payment, harassment, exploitation, unfair treatment, and loss of usual social benefits; it does not establish how often those outcomes occur among all freelancers. Read the APEC 2024 report on working conditions for women online freelance workers for that context.

Where should you start?

Match the first platform to your immediate goal: package a repeatable service, pitch for projects, apply to a specialist network, search verified listings, or show a portfolio to prospective clients. Upwork’s 2026 guide to freelance websites likewise recommends focusing on a small number of sites that fit your skills rather than spreading effort across many. No platform guarantees a first client, so judge the channel by the quality of relevant opportunities it produces for you.
