A digital audio cable carries audio data between compatible devices. The right one depends on the ports and audio formats your devices support: common options include optical or coaxial S/PDIF, professional AES3/AES-EBU, and HDMI for connections that carry video too.
What a digital audio cable does
“Digital audio cable” is a broad term, not the name of one universal cable standard. It describes a physical connection used to carry digital audio through a particular interface. The interface defines how devices communicate; the cable and connectors must suit that interface.
The Audio Engineering Society describes AES3 this way: “AES3 provides for the serial digital transmission of two channels of periodically sampled and uniformly quantized audio signals on various media.” That is the standard’s scope, not a description of every digital-audio connection. Audio Engineering Society, AES3-2009 (r2019)
Common digital audio connections
Coaxial S/PDIF
Coaxial S/PDIF carries digital audio electrically, commonly through RCA connectors. For this connection, Focusrite recommends a purpose-made 75-ohm S/PDIF cable. A cable that merely has RCA plugs is not necessarily specified for S/PDIF. Focusrite: What type of RCA cable can I use for S/PDIF?
#1 Best Overall
- Optical digital audio cable: Perfect for equipment with a TOSLINK interface (OPT In / OPT Out or S/PDIF In / S/PDIF Out). TOSLINK connector to TOSLINK connector (F05 connector)
- Versatile: Ideal for transmitting crystal-clear digital audio from your TV, video game console (PS3/PS4/Xbox One), DVD/Blu-ray player, or TV streaming box to a soundbar, amplifier/amp, stereo/Hi-Fi system, D/A converter, and more
- High-End: This metal-free fiber optic audio cable, featuring a fully flexible PVC jacket, is entirely immune to electrical interference. Each cable undergoes multi-stage testing during manufacturing to ensure maximum product quality and durability
- 24K gold-plated connectors: Corrosion resistant gold plating keeps connectors clean. And because these cables are fiber optic, they provide 100 % signal transmission with 0 % loss
- No risk: 36 months manufacturer warranty
Optical S/PDIF and TOSLINK
Optical S/PDIF sends digital audio as light through a TOSLINK connection. TOSLINK identifies a physical optical connection; it does not by itself guarantee that two devices support the same audio format. Check both devices’ specifications. AES3 / AES-EBU
AES3, often called AES-EBU in equipment documentation, is a professional digital-audio standard. XLR connectors are common, but implementations can use different media and connectors. Follow the equipment maker’s cable and impedance guidance; Genelec specifies 110-ohm twisted-pair cable for the application covered by its guidance. Devices connected through AES3 also need to operate at the same sample rate. Audio Engineering Society: AES3-2009 (r2019) Genelec: What sort of cable should I use for digital connections? HDMI
HDMI can carry digital audio and video over one connection. Choose a cable category and certification suited to the features your devices require, and check the devices’ capabilities as well: a cable cannot add features that the connected equipment does not support. How to choose the right cable
- Check the source output and receiving-device input. Look for labels such as S/PDIF, Digital Audio, Optical Audio, TOSLINK, or Digital Coaxial. The connector shape is a useful clue, but confirm the port in each device’s manual. Philips Support: Digital TV audio connection guidance
- Match the connection at both ends. RCA coaxial S/PDIF, optical TOSLINK, AES3 connections, and HDMI are different interfaces. If one device has optical S/PDIF and the other has coaxial S/PDIF, you need a converter that supports the source and destination formats; a cable with different plugs does not perform conversion. Philips Support: Digital TV audio connection guidance
- Check format support in both manuals. Confirm supported sample rates, channel configurations, and encoded formats. For AES3 connections, Focusrite notes that connected devices must use the same sample rate. Focusrite: System Science – Part 4: Digital Considerations
- Follow interface-specific cable guidance. For coaxial S/PDIF, Focusrite recommends 75-ohm cable. For AES-EBU, use the cable specification called for by the equipment maker; Genelec’s 110-ohm twisted-pair guidance applies to its stated application. - For HDMI, match the cable category and certification to the intended features. Verify that both connected devices support those features. HDMI Licensing Administrator: HDMI cables HDMI Licensing Administrator: HDMI 2.2
Is optical or coaxial digital audio better?
Neither is universally better. They use different physical connections, so the practical choice is usually determined by the available ports and the formats supported by both devices. If the ports do not match, use a format-compatible converter rather than assuming a cable adapter will translate the signal. Philips Support: Digital TV audio connection guidance

- CONNECTS DEVICES: Quickly connects a sound bar, CD player, Blu-Ray player, game console, or other device to an audio system or TV.
Does a digital audio cable need to be special?
It needs to be appropriate for the interface. In particular, Focusrite recommends purpose-made 75-ohm cable for coaxial S/PDIF, while professional AES-EBU connections should follow the equipment maker’s cable and impedance requirements. The available guidance supports choosing the correct interface, specification, and format; it does not establish a general audible improvement from paying more for a digital cable.
