YouTube’s documented direct ingest options do not include SRT, so the practical workflow is to send an SRT contribution feed to Google Cloud, then distribute the output to YouTube using a supported protocol such as RTMP. This is a two-hop relay, not direct SRT ingest by YouTube.
How SRT reaches YouTube through Google Cloud
- Send the contribution feed to Google Cloud. Configure an input endpoint in Google Cloud Live Stream API for SRT. The encoder or transcoder sending the feed must support SRT.
- Configure the service output. Google Cloud Live Stream API can transcode input to HLS or DASH outputs, and its overview says output streams are saved to Cloud Storage. For remote distribution, the API also documents SRT and RTMP outputs; its SRT distribution uses MPEG-TS and its RTMP distribution uses FLV. Confirm the endpoint’s current configuration options before deployment. Google Cloud Live Stream API overview · Google Cloud remote distribution documentation
- Send a supported output to YouTube. Use a YouTube stream key and endpoint configured for a protocol YouTube supports. RTMP or RTMPS is the compatible choice for the documented Google Cloud RTMP distribution path; SRT is not listed as a direct YouTube ingest protocol. YouTube Live encoder settings and protocols
What each service supports
| Service or workflow stage | Documented protocol support | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud Live Stream API input | SRT and RTMP | Can receive an SRT contribution feed from a compatible source encoder. |
| Google Cloud Live Stream API output | HLS or DASH transcoding outputs; remote distribution via SRT or RTMP | For remote SRT distribution, the documented format is MPEG-TS; for remote RTMP distribution, it is FLV. |
| YouTube Live third-party ingest | RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH | SRT is absent from YouTube’s documented protocol list, so do not configure a direct SRT-to-YouTube connection. |
Protocol support at one hop does not automatically carry through to the next. Google Cloud accepting SRT does not mean YouTube accepts SRT; the relay must use an output protocol supported by the YouTube endpoint and stream key.
Which output should you use?
RTMPS for ordinary low-latency streams
YouTube recommends RTMPS for typical low-latency live streams. Choose it when the output path and encoder or transcoder support it and the YouTube stream configuration offers that endpoint. Google Cloud’s remote-distribution documentation specifically describes RTMP; verify the currently available configuration if you require RTMPS rather than RTMP. YouTube’s protocol guidance
HLS when HDR or codec support calls for it
YouTube describes HLS as an option for HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support. HLS sends video in segments, so it generally introduces more latency than RTMP-family ingest. DASH is also segment-based and tends to have higher latency than RTMP-family ingest. Use a segment-based route only when its format support matters more than minimizing delay. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
SRT for the contribution hop
Google Cloud recommends SRT over RTMP for its input endpoint when possible, citing packet-drop recovery, forward error correction, support for multiple audio elementary streams, and higher bandwidth. Those advantages apply to the SRT input leg; they do not change YouTube’s documented ingest protocols. Your source encoder must support SRT to use this path. Google Cloud input documentation
Check these points before building the relay
- Encoder capability: Confirm that the contribution encoder can send SRT and can produce the required video and audio formats.
- Protocol at each hop: Record the source-to-cloud protocol separately from the cloud-to-YouTube protocol. Do not enter an SRT destination as though it were a YouTube ingest endpoint.
- Latency needs: Account for extra processing and, for HLS or DASH, segment-based delivery. A relay cannot make a segment-based destination behave like a low-latency RTMP-family path.
- HDR or codec requirements: If these drive the choice of HLS, verify that the entire output chain and the selected YouTube ingest endpoint support the required format.
- Current endpoint settings: Protocol availability and service configuration can change. Check the current Google Cloud input endpoint configuration and the ingest protocol available for the specific YouTube stream key.
Common compatibility problems
- YouTube does not connect to an SRT destination: YouTube’s documented third-party ingest list does not include SRT. Use a cloud relay that accepts SRT and delivers to YouTube over a supported protocol, or send a supported protocol directly from your encoder.
- Google Cloud does not receive the contribution feed: Check that the input endpoint is configured for SRT and that the sending encoder supports SRT with matching connection settings.
- The cloud output cannot be delivered to YouTube: Check the output protocol against the selected YouTube endpoint and stream key. For the documented RTMP remote-distribution path, verify the RTMP endpoint details and stream key rather than using the SRT input address.
- Delay is higher than expected: HLS and DASH are segment-based and tend to add more latency than RTMP-family ingest. Review the selected output protocol if low latency is the priority.
- Audio or format handling differs from the source: The Live Stream API may transcode output. Check its configured output and the destination’s supported formats; do not assume the source feed will pass through unchanged.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping on a YouTube channel 24/7, rather than relay a live SRT contribution feed, StreamNeo is a different kind of service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera feed, and it does not replace an SRT relay for a live contribution source.
