There is no evidence-backed universal winner among Hetzner Cloud, DigitalOcean Droplets, Linode/Akamai, Vultr, and Amazon Lightsail. The right choice depends on your Docker workflow, target region, resource needs, and the full monthly bill—not just the entry price. Current published plan details support useful comparisons for DigitalOcean and Lightsail; a 2026 third-party benchmark covers Hetzner, Linode, and DigitalOcean under one shared-VM test setup. The available evidence does not establish a five-provider price or performance ranking.

What counts as a cloud VPS for Docker?

A cloud VPS is a virtual machine rented from a provider. DigitalOcean calls its Linux virtual machines Droplets and describes a Droplet as a VPS; Hetzner likewise describes its cloud servers as VMs. On a general-purpose VM, you install and operate Docker yourself. You remain responsible for the operating system, Docker updates, firewall, backups, monitoring, scaling, and recovery.

A managed container service is different: the provider supplies a deployment environment for container images, rather than a general-purpose VM on which you administer the host. Amazon Lightsail offers both VM bundles and a separate container service, so their prices and operating models should not be treated as equivalent.

How the five providers compare

This is a comparison of the evidence available, not a ranked test of five identical plans. Plan prices below are page-listed examples reviewed October 7, 2026, unless identified as benchmark prices. Provider offerings, regions, and billing can change; check the live configuration and terms before choosing.

Provider Pricing and resource evidence Docker path and important qualification
DigitalOcean Droplets Its listed Basic examples include $6/month for 1 CPU, 1 GiB memory, 25 GiB storage, and 1,000 GiB bandwidth; $24/month for 4 GiB memory, 80 GiB storage, and 4,000 GiB bandwidth; and $48/month for 8 GiB memory, 160 GiB storage, and 5,000 GiB bandwidth. The pricing page also says bundled plans start at $4/month and transfer starts at 500 GiB/month, so do not assume the sample plan’s allowance applies to every configuration. The pricing page lists a preconfigured Docker 1-Click App for Droplets. This is Docker on a VM, not a managed container service. DigitalOcean bills Droplets per second with a 60-second minimum; bundled plans are capped at their monthly price, while v5 resource-configured Droplets do not have a monthly usage cap.
Amazon Lightsail Its Linux/Unix bundles include $5/month for 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD, and 1 TB transfer; $7/month for 1 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 40 GB SSD, and 2 TB transfer; and $12/month for 2 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 60 GB SSD, and 3 TB transfer. These are specific bundle examples, not equivalent resource shapes to the DigitalOcean plans. Install and manage Docker on a VM, or use the separate Lightsail container service, which supports public-registry and custom images. The container service is priced by selected power and node scale: AWS’s documentation gives a $40/month medium-power node example, which costs $120/month at scale three. Bundle variants and transfer allowances can differ by OS and IP type.
Hetzner Cloud A current like-for-like plan price is not stated in the cited materials. Use the live selector to price the chosen region, resource type, and required public IP. Use a general-purpose VM and manage Docker yourself; the cited materials do not establish a provider-managed Docker service. Hetzner distinguishes shared-resource and dedicated-resource servers. A public IP is not automatically included, and a server continues to incur charges while powered off until deleted, subject to a monthly price cap.
Linode/Akamai AIMultiple reported a $48/month price for the shared 4-vCPU/8-GB plan in its 2026 benchmark. That is the benchmark’s tested configuration and reported price, not a verified current entry price or a full current plan comparison. The benchmark establishes performance results for one selected Linode configuration, but the cited materials do not establish current official Docker setup details, billing terms, or a like-for-like current plan price.
Vultr A current price and comparable instance configuration are not stated in the cited materials. The cited benchmark does not report Vultr results, and the available materials do not establish its current Docker workflow, transfer terms, or billing details. Verify these in Vultr’s current official plan and documentation pages before comparing costs.

Which provider fits your Docker workload?

Choose a predictable bundle when its resource shape fits

Lightsail’s VM plans bundle compute, memory, SSD storage, and transfer into one listed monthly maximum. That can make budgeting more straightforward, but a low entry price does not mean equivalent capacity: its $5/month Linux/Unix example has 0.5 GB memory, while DigitalOcean’s $6/month Basic example has 1 GiB memory and a different CPU, storage, and transfer bundle.

Choose a preconfigured Docker VM when you want a quicker start

DigitalOcean lists a Docker 1-Click App, which can reduce initial setup steps. It does not remove the work of maintaining the VM, securing the host, or managing persistent data and recovery. Compare the selected Droplet’s included transfer and monthly cap with the actual workload rather than relying on the advertised starting price.

Consider Hetzner when resource type and region matter

Hetzner offers shared- and dedicated-resource cloud servers in Europe, the United States, and Singapore, according to its documentation. That range may be relevant when you need a particular geography or want to compare shared and dedicated compute. Include the cost of a Primary IP in the total, and account for billing while a server is merely powered off.

Treat Linode and Vultr as candidates to verify, not priced winners

Linode has a published benchmark result for a shared 4-vCPU/8-GB configuration, but that alone does not establish the best current price or fit for a Docker deployment. For both Linode/Akamai and Vultr, verify current plan specifications, Docker setup options, transfer allowances and overages, regions, IP charges, backups, and billing before making a cost-based decision.

Use a managed container service only if you want that operating model

Lightsail’s container service accepts container images and prices deployments by power and node scale. It is not simply a cheaper or more expensive version of a Lightsail VM: it changes how you deploy and manage applications and does not offer the same general-purpose host administration. Compare the service’s cost at the node count and power level you actually need with the combined VM and operations cost of self-managed Docker.

What the published VPS benchmarks actually show

AIMultiple’s benchmark, updated August 12, 2026, reports roughly 1,200 automated tests per server across CPU, memory, disk I/O, and network. It used sysbench, fio, and speedtest-cli on shared 4-vCPU/8-GB plans, without extras or services added. Its reported figures are a snapshot of those selected plans, prices, regions, and test conditions—not a controlled comparison of all five providers or a forecast for your application.

Provider Reported price CPU events/sec Memory write Random read Sequential read/write Network download/upload
Hetzner $18.59/month 14,493 (±35) 5,423 MiB/sec 59,558 IOPS 3,728/3,013 MB/sec 1,811/1,689 Mbps
Linode $48/month 6,133 (±150) 2,836 MiB/sec 71,068 IOPS 8,187/4,983 MB/sec 1,603/1,145 Mbps
DigitalOcean $48/month 3,408 (±174) 4,400 MiB/sec 54,295 IOPS 2,298/350 MB/sec 1,673/1,172 Mbps

All values in this table are AIMultiple’s reported results for its 2026 shared 4-vCPU/8-GB test configurations. The CPU uncertainty is reproduced as reported. The benchmark page reports six providers overall, but the displayed results available here do not include Vultr or Lightsail. These measurements cannot establish long-term availability, performance under your own Docker workload, or the author’s firsthand experience. They also measure different dimensions: for example, the reported CPU result and disk throughput do not point to one provider as the winner on every task.

How to compare the real monthly cost

Compare the complete configuration your workload will run, not a headline starting price. For short-lived development environments, billing increments and whether powered-off machines continue to bill can materially change the total. For a public service, network allowances and IP charges can matter as much as compute.

  • Compute: Record vCPU count and whether resources are shared or dedicated. Note whether the workload is CPU-bound or needs more memory.
  • Storage: Compare capacity, storage type, and any separate volume or snapshot charges. Benchmark I/O is workload- and test-dependent.
  • Network: Check whether inbound or outbound transfer is counted, included monthly transfer, overage rates, and regional performance.
  • Public access: Confirm whether a public IPv4 address is included or separately charged. Hetzner’s cited documentation says a public IP must be added.
  • Resilience: Add backups, snapshots, monitoring, and any recovery resources you require.
  • Billing: Check minimum billing, monthly caps, charges while powered off, and whether temporary test servers must be deleted to stop billing.
  • Operations: Include the time and responsibility for patching, firewall rules, Docker updates, monitoring, scaling, and restoring data on a self-managed VM.

A practical way to make the choice

  1. Define the deployment. Decide whether you want a general-purpose VM with self-managed Docker or a managed container service, and estimate its memory, CPU, storage, and transfer needs.
  2. Pick the region first. Select a location near your users or development team, then compare only plans available there. Region affects latency and may affect price or plan availability.
  3. Build a full monthly estimate. Add the VM or service price, public IP, storage, backups, and likely transfer overages. For temporary environments, apply the provider’s actual billing behavior.
  4. Test your own workload. Deploy the same container, dataset, and load pattern on the finalists. Measure the outcome that matters—such as request latency, build time, or database I/O—rather than treating another publisher’s synthetic benchmark as your result.
  5. Validate recovery and security. Confirm how you will patch, restrict network access, back up persistent data, and restore the service before putting important workloads on the VPS.

Verdict by use case

  • For an entry-level VM with a listed Docker setup option: DigitalOcean is the clearest fit in the available evidence; its 1-Click App is still a self-managed VM workflow.
  • For a bundled VM price or a managed container alternative: Compare the specific Lightsail bundle with your required resources, or price its container service separately at the scale you need.
  • For comparing shared and dedicated resources across Europe, the United States, or Singapore: Include Hetzner in the shortlist, but price the selected server and required public IP before comparing totals.
  • For a performance-led comparison: AIMultiple’s results make Hetzner, Linode, and DigitalOcean relevant candidates for testing, but they are not a five-provider ranking and should not replace a workload-specific trial.
  • For Linode/Akamai or Vultr on price or Docker features: Confirm current official plan and setup details before selecting; the available figures do not support a current head-to-head value conclusion.
