For most people, the Apple iPad 11 (2025, A16) is the strongest all-round pick in Tom’s Guide’s 2026 list. Choose the Motorola MotoPad (2026) for standard Android and Google Play, the Amazon Fire HD 10 for Amazon services, or the Lenovo Tab Plus Gen 2 for a larger screen and built-in speakers. These are Tom’s Guide’s tested selections, not a guarantee that every configuration is currently under $500; check the price for the exact model and storage before buying.
How the four tablets compare
The table summarizes the configurations and test results Tom’s Guide reports. Battery runtimes come from that publication’s 2026 test, which set screens to 150 nits and repeatedly browsed the web over Wi-Fi until each tablet ran out of battery. They are test results, not promises of the runtime you will get.

All four runtimes are reported by Tom’s Guide in 2026 under the same stated test method. Other publications may use different methods, so small runtime differences across reviews are not a direct head-to-head comparison. TechRepublic also evaluates tablets under $500, but its eligibility rule excludes a tablet whose usual list price exceeds $500 even if it is temporarily on sale; its different selection reflects different criteria and use cases. Apple iPad 11 (2025, A16): best all-rounder
Tom’s Guide names the iPad 11 its best overall choice, citing its A16 performance, battery life, light design and access to Apple’s app ecosystem. The listed 128GB base capacity is a step up from earlier entry-level storage, and the guide cites a $349 price in its article text; check current pricing for the configuration you want. Its caveats matter if you use a stylus or work in bright surroundings: Tom’s Guide notes the display can seem dim in bright areas and that the tablet lacks key Apple Pencil support. Motorola MotoPad (2026): best for budget Android
The MotoPad is the fit if you want standard Android and Google Play rather than a more restricted app catalog. Tom’s Guide reports 10 hours 31 minutes in its 2026 Wi-Fi browsing test, but says the tablet struggled with basic 3D games even at low settings. That makes it a better match for browsing, streaming and lighter tasks than for demanding games or sustained heavy work. Check listings for Motorola MotoPad (2026).
Amazon Fire HD 10: best for Amazon services
For Kindle reading, Prime Video and other Amazon-centered use, the Fire HD 10 is the straightforward choice in this group. Its 10.1-inch 1920 × 1200 screen, 3GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB of built-in storage are complemented by microSD expansion up to 1TB. The important compromise is software: Fire OS offers a more limited app selection than Google Play, so confirm that the apps you rely on are available before choosing it. Tom’s Guide reports 12 hours 39 minutes in its 2026 Wi-Fi browsing test. Check listings for Amazon Fire HD 10.

Lenovo Tab Plus Gen 2: best for watching and listening
The Lenovo’s 12.1-inch 2.5K display, 120Hz refresh rate, integrated JBL speakers and kickstand make it the entertainment-focused option. Tom’s Guide reports 16 hours in its 2026 battery test. The speaker hardware adds bulk, and the tablet is not intended for heavy workloads, so it is a less natural choice if portability or demanding multitasking matters more than media. Tom’s Guide describes it as under $400 and often on sale below $300, but those prices are time-sensitive; verify the live price and configuration. Check listings for Lenovo Tab Plus Gen 2.
Is an iPad or Android tablet better if I’m on a budget?
It depends on the devices and apps you already use. The iPad is a natural fit if you own Apple devices or want access to Apple’s tablet app ecosystem. The MotoPad offers standard Android and Google Play flexibility. The Fire HD 10 runs Fire OS and is better suited to Amazon services than to shoppers who need the wider app selection associated with Google Play. Compare the apps you actually use—not just the operating system name—before deciding.

Are Amazon Fire tablets worth buying instead of Android tablets?
They can be, if your main activities are Kindle reading, Prime Video and other Amazon services and the Fire OS app catalog includes what you need. If you depend on Google Play apps, the more limited selection is a meaningful drawback. Check specific app availability before you buy rather than assuming an Android app will be available on Fire OS.
Can a cheap tablet play games or replace a laptop?
Casual games and everyday tasks are different from demanding games or sustained multitasking. Tom’s Guide says the MotoPad struggled with basic 3D games at low settings, so it is not a good choice for that workload. The iPad 11 offers stronger general performance in Tom’s Guide’s assessment, but the guide does not position it as a laptop replacement for demanding work. If you need desktop-class software, extended multitasking or a keyboard-centered workflow, check that the tablet and its apps can handle those tasks before treating it as a computer substitute.

- Exact price and configuration: confirm the current price, storage capacity and generation. The under-$500 label does not establish that every configuration is currently below that limit.
- Apps and services: verify availability for the apps you depend on, especially if considering Fire OS.
- Workload: match the tablet to your actual use—light browsing and video, casual games, or more demanding tasks.
- Screen and portability: consider display size and brightness alongside weight and speaker bulk.
- Storage and accessories: check whether built-in storage or microSD expansion suits you, and confirm stylus or keyboard support if you need those accessories.
