For a sealed case that protects against water as well as drops, OtterBox Frē is the closest option supported by current product information. For primarily drop and impact protection, OtterBox Defender is a different choice—but its cited product information does not establish waterproofing. “Better” depends on the hazard you need to guard against, and Frē has a LifeProof connection: OtterBox says it was originally designed by LifeProof and refined by OtterBox.
Which case is better depends on what you need protection from
Start with the risk, not a general durability ranking. If you need a case with stated submersion protection, look at Frē and check the specifications for your exact phone model. If your priority is absorbing impact from drops or rough handling and you do not need a sealed waterproof case, Defender may be a better fit.

The company says the line was “Originally designed by LifeProof and refined by OtterBox.” That makes Frē a continuation of LifeProof’s case design under OtterBox, rather than an entirely unrelated manufacturer’s alternative.

Do not assume the same limits apply to every Frē case or phone generation; verify the exact model variant before buying.
OtterBox Defender: for drops, not a waterproof substitute
Defender is a distinct option for people whose main concern is drops, job sites, or rough daily handling. OtterBox describes a solid inner shell and durable outer cover intended to absorb shock, and says its cases are tested to meet or exceed MIL-STD-810G-516.6.

The cited Defender product information does not make a waterproofing claim. Do not choose it as a substitute for Frē if you need protection against submersion.
What OtterBox’s drop-test figures mean
OtterBox’s DROP+ testing explanation says the cited MIL-STD-810G 516.6 baseline requires a case and device to be dropped 26 times from 4 feet. The company describes its multipliers as repetitions of that count:

How to compare cases for your phone
- Check the exact device fit. Match the case to the phone’s full model and generation; availability and specifications can vary by variant.
- Confirm the protection claim you need. For submersion, look for a model-specific depth and duration. For drops, check the stated test method and multiplier. Do not infer water protection from a drop-test claim.
- Inspect screen and port coverage. Confirm whether the case seals or covers the screen and ports, and whether you are comfortable with that design.
- Check charging and accessory compatibility. Verify that your charging method and accessories work with the case fitted.
- Account for bulk and handling. A more protective design may be larger or less convenient for everyday use; assess the trade-off for your routine.

Which one should you choose?
