Before a trip, check composition guides, which camera settings persist, photo and video formats, resolution, and location tagging. The right choices depend on how you shoot and share: higher-information capture can use more storage, while location tags add GPS details to your media. Menu names and available features vary by phone model and software.
iPhone settings to review
Turn on framing guides if they help
Go to Settings > Camera and review Grid and Level. These guides can help you align horizons and vertical lines; they do not change the image itself. Apple also documents a timer and 1:1, 4:3, and 16:9 aspect-ratio choices in Camera for situations where those controls are useful. See Apple’s guide to camera tools.
Choose what the Camera app remembers
Open Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings. Apple lists options that can retain choices such as Camera Mode, exposure adjustment, Night mode, and Live Photo, with availability varying by model and software. Enable only the preferences you want carried into later camera sessions; otherwise, the app can return to its usual defaults. See Apple’s Preserve Settings guide.
Match resolution and format to your trip
In Camera settings, review the resolution and format controls available on your iPhone. Apple’s advanced camera guide describes 12 MP and 24 MP defaults on supported models and a path to 48 MP capture, but the options depend on the device. Higher resolution may be useful when you expect to crop or edit; for everyday sharing, a larger capture is not automatically better. Use ProRAW when you plan to edit
ProRAW retains more image information for editing, and Apple says ProRAW files are larger. Treat it as an intentional workflow choice rather than a default for every travel photo. Check whether your model supports it and whether you have room to store and handle the files. See Apple’s ProRAW guide.
Samsung Galaxy settings to review
Enable composition guides if you want them
Open the Camera app’s settings and look for Composition guide or Composition lines. Samsung’s exact label and availability vary by Galaxy model. The guide can help with framing and alignment. Decide which settings should persist
In Camera settings, review Settings to keep, if your phone offers it. Samsung documents options such as shooting mode, selfie angle, and filters. Keeping a preferred mode can save a step; leaving it off can make the camera return to a familiar starting point. Choose according to how you want the camera to behave between sessions.
Check photo and video formats
Review the Camera settings for Photo format and Video format. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 guide documents HEIF for Photo mode and multiple video choices, but those controls should not be assumed to appear on every Galaxy. Consider storage, the apps and devices you use, and whether recipients can open the formats you select before switching. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 camera features guide describes its model’s options.

Choose whether photos and videos include location
Samsung’s Camera settings include Location tags on supported devices. When enabled, the tags attach GPS location information to photos and videos. That can help you organize or remember where you took them, but it also puts location data in the media. Leave it off if you do not want that information attached. Prioritize video controls only if they fit your plans
If you expect to record moving scenes or in low light, check whether your Galaxy offers video controls such as stabilization or Auto FPS. Samsung documents these features on supported devices; their presence and settings vary by model. The Galaxy Z Flip6 guide and Galaxy S26 guide describe options for those specific phones.

How to choose between the options
- Convenience: Decide whether you want the last-used mode and controls to carry over, or prefer the camera to return to a familiar default.
- Storage and editing: Higher resolution or RAW capture can be worthwhile if you expect to crop or edit, but weigh the extra information against file size and the editing workflow. Apple specifically notes that ProRAW files are larger.
- Sharing: Check whether the formats you choose work with your own devices, apps, and recipients. Compatibility depends on that workflow, not just the phone’s setting.
- Privacy and organization: Location tags can make travel media easier to sort, but add GPS information. Choose based on whether that tradeoff suits you.
Do a quick check before departure
- Open your phone’s Camera settings and turn on Grid, Level, or composition guides if you find them useful.
- Review Preserve Settings on iPhone or Settings to keep on Galaxy, and retain only the preferences you want between sessions.
- Check the photo and video resolution or format options your specific model supports; consider storage and sharing before changing them.
- Decide whether you want GPS location attached to your media. Samsung documents its Location tags control; these directions do not establish an equivalent current iPhone menu path.
- If you plan to record video, inspect supported stabilization or frame-rate controls and try your chosen setup before relying on it during the trip.
