If you want a music file you can keep and play across your own devices, buy a download rather than assuming a streaming service’s offline mode gives you a portable file. For most people, MP3 is the simplest choice for small files and broad compatibility; choose FLAC for a lossless archive, ALAC for an Apple-oriented lossless library, or WAV or AIFF for specific editing or audio-CD workflows. The best option depends on what the particular release offers and what your player supports.
First decide whether you need a file or streaming access
A purchased download and a subscription’s offline playback are different kinds of access. A downloaded purchase is a file you can store locally, subject to the store’s terms. A subscription download may remain tied to the service and its app; check the service’s terms and the actual file type before treating it as a portable music file.
Apple’s US English media-services terms distinguish purchased content from subscription content. They say Apple content is generally for personal, noncommercial use unless Apple specifies otherwise, and that delivery does not grant commercial or promotional rights. Apple also warns that purchased content can become unavailable for further access if removed from the service, and recommends downloading purchases and keeping backups. Which audio format should you download?
Choose based on your playback device, storage, and whether you need lossless audio—not on the format name alone. A lossless format preserves the encoded audio data, but it does not mean every store offers every release in every format or resolution. Check the specific album or track’s download options before paying.

MP3: the practical default
Choose MP3 when you want compact files, quick downloads, and broad compatibility with players and apps. Bandcamp describes MP3 as its standard format and says its MP3 downloads use variable bit-rate encoding to reduce file size while maintaining quality. Its listed choices include MP3 V0 and MP3 320; the service’s format advice does not establish that every release offers both. Bandcamp: Which audio format should I download?
FLAC: lossless and broadly supported
FLAC is a sensible choice for a lossless local archive if your playback equipment or software supports it. Both Bandcamp and Qobuz list FLAC among their download formats. Confirm the release’s available quality and your device’s compatibility before selecting it. Bandcamp: In which formats can I download my purchases? ALAC: lossless for compatible Apple-oriented libraries
ALAC is another lossless option, particularly if it fits the software and devices in your Apple-oriented library. Bandcamp and Qobuz both list it, but check that the player you intend to use can handle ALAC.
WAV or AIFF: for particular production or disc workflows
WAV and AIFF can suit editing workflows; Bandcamp specifically suggests either for making an audio CD. They are not necessary simply because you want a high-quality copy: FLAC and ALAC are also lossless choices. Make sure the software or device you plan to use accepts the format.

AAC, Ogg Vorbis, and specialist high-resolution options
Bandcamp lists AAC and Ogg Vorbis as alternatives. Qobuz lists MP3 and AAC at 320 or 128 kbps, as well as lossless options and higher-resolution formats. Its help page, dated August 24, 2026, documents DSD64, DSD128, DSD256, DSD512, and DXD at 24-bit/352.8 kHz. These are service-wide documented options, not a promise that a particular release is available in every format or tier. A high-resolution label describes technical specifications; it does not establish that the version will sound better on every device or playback chain.
What formats do Bandcamp and Qobuz list?
The services publish different format menus. These lists describe formats each service documents, not guaranteed options for every track. Check the release page, the quality selector, and the file details before purchasing.

Bandcamp’s format list is on its download-format help page. Qobuz’s documented options are on its audio-format help page. Neither list is a cross-store catalog or price comparison; check the current listing for your country and the exact release.
Does DRM-free mean you can do anything with the file?
No. DRM concerns playback restrictions; it does not transfer copyright or automatically grant commercial, synchronization, or redistribution rights. Bandcamp says its downloaded audio files are DRM-free, and Qobuz makes the same claim for purchased files. Apple’s US English terms, by contrast, set personal, noncommercial use as the general rule unless otherwise specified. Follow the terms of the store and rights holder, especially if you plan to use music in a video, public performance, or commercial project.

How to buy a download that works for your setup
- Check the access model. Confirm that the offer is a paid download if you need a local file, rather than offline playback attached to a subscription.
- Check the release’s actual choices. Look at the album or track page and note its available formats and quality tiers; a service’s general format list does not guarantee availability for an individual release.
- Match the format to your player. Use MP3 for broad compatibility; select FLAC or ALAC for lossless storage when your software supports it; choose WAV or AIFF when your workflow calls for them.
- Consider storage and intended use. If space or transfer time matters, a compact lossy format may be more convenient. If you are archiving, a lossless format avoids discarding audio information during encoding. The source pages do not establish a universal audible advantage for a higher-resolution file.
- Read the usage terms. DRM-free playback does not by itself authorize sharing, commercial use, or adding a track to a video.
- Download and back up purchases. Keep a local copy in a place you control, and make a separate backup rather than relying only on future redownload access.
What to do if a download sounds wrong
A store’s upload specification is not a guarantee that every source file is flawless. Bandcamp requires uploads to be lossless stereo WAV, AIFF, or FLAC at a minimum of 16-bit/44.1 kHz, but says errors such as missing or duplicated tracks, incorrect order, pops, or cracks can still occur. If a Bandcamp purchase has one of these problems, contact the artist to request a fix. Bandcamp says purchased download links and streams update if the files are replaced.
