To reduce false Arlo motion alerts, lower Motion Detection sensitivity for the mode generating them, limit Activity Zones to the area you actually want to monitor, and re-aim the camera to keep irrelevant movement out of view. If the problem is unwanted push notifications rather than unwanted clips, adjust Smart Notifications instead: those category controls can silence alerts while events still appear in the Feed.
First decide whether you want fewer alerts, fewer recordings, or both
Arlo settings affect different stages of motion handling. Smart Notifications control which event categories trigger push alerts. Motion sensitivity, Activity Zones, camera positioning, and Modes and Rules can change which motion is detected or recorded. Identify the unwanted outcome first so you do not suppress a useful recording just to quiet a phone.
- Too many push notifications: review Smart Notification categories and the notification behavior of the active mode.
- Too many clips in the Feed: tune sensitivity, Activity Zones, camera position, Smart Detections, or the relevant mode rules.
- Both: start with sensitivity and the camera’s view, then use zones and notification controls to refine the result.
Lower Motion Detection sensitivity in the mode that is triggering alerts
In the Arlo Secure app, open Devices, select the camera, then open Default Mode Settings and move the Motion Detection slider lower. A lower setting can reduce unwanted motion events, but it can also miss movement you want to catch, so adjust it gradually and check the result in the actual scene. Labels and paths can vary by app or device version.
Arlo’s motion sensitivity instructions describe a test for finding a workable level: open Motion Detection Test, begin at Low, and walk 5–10 feet in front of the camera while increasing sensitivity until the camera LED blinks. The test does not save a new motion setting. After testing, return to Default Mode Settings and set the slider you want to use.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Modes can have separate rules. If alerts come from a custom mode or another active mode, changing the default setting alone may not address them. Arlo’s notification guidance says to lower sensitivity in the rules for each relevant mode.
Use a small Activity Zone around the important area
Draw a zone around the doorway, walkway, or other specific region where motion matters, rather than covering the whole yard or view. A broad zone can include trees, flags, or other objects that move often. Arlo notes that only part of an object needs to enter an Activity Zone for detection, so a zone that just touches a busy area may still admit unwanted events. See Arlo’s Activity Zone troubleshooting guidance.

Zones can affect Feed events, but availability and behavior depend on the camera, power, and subscription setup. Arlo also states that Local Storage saves all videos regardless of whether activity was inside an Activity Zone. Its Activity Zones and Smart filters article explains these distinctions; check the storage path you use before relying on a zone to suppress saved clips.
If you use Auto Zoom & Tracking, check zone alignment after adjusting the view. Arlo warns that the feature can affect Activity Zone accuracy and recommends turning it off when using zones if they are not working as expected. Redraw or refine the zones after changing camera position or zoom.

Reposition the camera to exclude irrelevant motion
When a street, sidewalk, or frequently moving object triggers events, aim the camera so that area is outside its field of view where practical. Changing the view can remove the source of unwanted detection rather than merely reducing sensitivity for everything in the frame. Redraw Activity Zones after moving the camera.
Arlo Europe’s motion optimization recommendations, last updated August 1, 2025, suggest mounting at least 7 feet (2 meters) above the ground, angling slightly down, and placing the camera 10–15 feet (3–4.5 meters) from expected motion. The same guidance describes 5–20 feet (1.5–6 meters) as the best area for motion detection and says side-to-side movement is easier for the sensor to detect than movement directly toward or away from the camera. These are Arlo’s setup recommendations, not a guarantee of accurate alerts in every scene.

Change Smart Notifications when clips are useful but alerts are not
Smart Notification controls let you toggle push alerts for People, Vehicles, Animal, and All Other Motion. These switches address notification categories; they do not necessarily stop recording, and events can still appear in the Feed. If you want clips without a notification, Arlo’s regional FAQ describes using a custom mode configured to record without notifications. Modes and notification behavior may vary by setup, and Critical Alerts may be handled separately from ordinary notification settings.

| Setting or change | What it changes | Important trade-off or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Motion Detection sensitivity | How readily the camera detects motion | Reducing it may also miss wanted motion; tune it for the camera and scene. |
| Activity Zones | The image area used for zone-based event handling | Availability and storage effects depend on camera and setup; Local Storage saves all videos. |
| Smart Notifications | Which event categories send push alerts | Turning a category off does not by itself prevent Feed recordings. |
| Camera placement and angle | Which areas and movement enter the camera’s view | May require remounting; update zones after repositioning. |
| Modes and Rules | Detection, recording, and notification behavior for a mode | Check every mode that can be active when unwanted alerts occur. |
Check the result in the Feed and notification history
- Change one setting at a time, beginning with the mode that produces the unwanted event.
- Observe the camera through the conditions that previously triggered false alerts, such as passing traffic or moving branches.
- Check both push notifications and Feed events. If alerts stop but clips remain, review Smart Notification categories; if clips persist, revisit sensitivity, zones, placement, and mode rules.
- If the camera view or zoom changed, verify that the Activity Zone still covers only the intended region.
Arlo’s current US notification guidance and its recording-reduction guidance cover related controls, including Modes and Rules and Smart Detections. Which options are available depends on the camera, app, plan, and storage configuration.
