These are commitments for specified devices, not every phone using Pixel software or One UI. The exact model, region and policy start date matter.
Which Android phones have the longest documented support?
The leading commitments in the official policies compared here are seven years for eligible Google Pixel 8-and-later devices and seven years of security updates, alongside seven generations of OS upgrades, for the Samsung Galaxy S24 and S25 series. The promises are similar in duration but not identical in wording or how their start dates are described.

Google announced the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro commitment in 2023. Samsung announced the S24 policy in 2024 and the S25 policy in 2025. For a current Pixel end date, use Google’s model-specific support table rather than calculating from the announcement year. Google’s [Pixel update policy](https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/4457705?hl=en) and [Pixel 8 announcement](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/devices/pixel/software-support-pixel-8-pixel-8-pro/) explain its commitment. Samsung’s [Galaxy S24 announcement](https://news.samsung.com/global/enter-the-new-era-of-mobile-ai-with-samsung-galaxy-s24-series) and [Galaxy S25 announcement](https://news.samsung.com/global/samsung-galaxy-s25-series-sets-the-new-standard-of-ai-phone-as-a-true-ai-companion) specify its series policies.
Does the Android skin determine how long a phone is supported?
No. “Android skin” is a useful shorthand for a manufacturer’s interface—such as One UI—but support is set by device policy. A flagship promise should not be assumed to cover every model from the same maker, and a software interface does not establish a uniform support term across all phones that use it.

That means “Does One UI get longer support than stock Android?” has no reliable brand-wide answer. Compare the exact Pixel or Galaxy model and its regional version. The seven-year policies above apply to named generations and eligible devices, not automatically to all phones running Pixel software or One UI.
OS upgrades and security updates are different promises
An OS-upgrade commitment concerns major Android or manufacturer OS generations. A security-update commitment concerns patches addressing security issues. One figure does not automatically establish the other: Samsung explicitly states both seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates, while Google’s Pixel 8 announcement describes a seven-year software-support period that includes Android updates, security updates and Feature Drops.

Also distinguish promised duration from delivery speed. These policy statements establish support commitments; they do not show that updates arrive simultaneously across models, carriers or countries, or provide a comparative measure of rollout speed.
How to compare two phones before buying or keeping one
- Identify the exact model and regional variant. Do not infer eligibility from the phone’s brand or interface alone.
- Find the OS-upgrade promise. Check whether the policy specifies Android-version upgrades or OS generations, and how many.
- Find the security-update term and end date. A general “years of support” phrase may not answer both questions; consult the manufacturer’s model-specific policy.
- Check when the clock starts. Google lists first US Google Store availability for Pixel support timing; Samsung’s S25 announcement counts from global launch.
- Read the regional and delivery caveats. Samsung says timing can vary by model, network provider and market. Confirm terms for the phone sold by your carrier or in your country.
What can be said about Xiaomi and Android’s baseline guidance?
Xiaomi: some models may get three years or more
Xiaomi’s global support FAQ does not promise one duration for every phone. It says some models may receive security updates for three years or longer, depending on actual conditions, and directs users to its end-of-life information. Treat that as a conditional, model-dependent statement—not a brand-wide guarantee or a direct seven-year comparison with Pixel and Galaxy policies. AOSP guidance is a recommendation, not a device warranty
Android’s AOSP security best-practice guidance recommends ongoing device security support for at least two years from launch. That is platform guidance, not proof that every manufacturer guarantees two years for every model. It cannot substitute for the device maker’s written policy. Not on these policy statements alone. Both reach a seven-year tier for the eligible devices described, but their wording and start-date conventions differ. Samsung explicitly pairs seven OS-upgrade generations with seven years of security updates; Google’s Pixel 8 announcement describes seven years of software support across OS updates, security updates and Feature Drops. Check the exact model’s current policy and regional terms rather than treating either interface as a blanket guarantee.
