Some niche AliExpress electronics can do a useful job, but the available independent tests are mixed—not proof that the marketplace’s gadgets are dependable as a class. A 2025 GreatScott! review summary describes six tested products: three earned recommendations, while others had reliability, functional, or safety drawbacks. The useful question is what each tested item can do, under what conditions, and what to verify before ordering.
This evidence supports a closer look at six products, not a verified list of eight currently available listings. Test results below are attributed to the reviewer; thermal-camera specifications are attributed to a seller. Neither should be treated as a guarantee about other listings or lookalike models.
Which products have evidence behind them?
| Product | What the evidence says | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small Linux project board | GreatScott!’s 2025 test summary reports Linux booting from an SD card and access to GPIO interfaces. | Serial-connected tinkering and lightweight projects | No Wi-Fi or Ethernet in the tested configuration; setup is not plug-and-play. |
| Makita battery adapter | The review summary reports charging a Makita battery and supplying USB-C and USB-A power. | A specific compatible battery-platform power setup | Results apply to the tested adapter and battery configuration, not every listing. |
| Peltier cup holder | The review summary reports both heating and cooling, with a limited cooling result in one test. | A desk gadget for modest temperature changes | No adjustable target temperature; low measured efficiency and display discrepancy. |
| USB-C soldering iron | A buyer guide documents Pinecil Version 2 capabilities as a reference point. | Portable soldering with a suitable power source | Those specifications are not evidence about generic marketplace clones. |
| Wi-Fi SD card adapter | The review summary describes inconsistent connections and failed file copies. | No dependable use case established by the described test. | Formatting and reliability problems; one test crash. |
| PTC heater | The review summary says it reached about 235°C and could reflow solder. | Not recommended. | Exposed mains wiring near metal, hot surfaces, and lack of proper earthing raised safety concerns. |
These are six products discussed in the available test summary, not eight verified recommendations. The table distinguishes reported test behavior from a product’s suitability: a device can perform its core function and still be a poor buy because of safety, setup, or reliability issues.

Which items appear useful for a specific job?
Small Linux board: for serial-based projects
GreatScott!’s 2025 summary describes a lightweight Linux board using an SD card, with GPIO access for interfaces including I2C, PWM, and SPI. The tested setup lacked both Wi-Fi and Ethernet, so the reviewer used a USB-to-serial adapter. The summary identifies a 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex-A7 processor and an integrated RISC-V core.
#1 Best Overall
That combination makes it a plausible low-cost project computer for someone comfortable with serial access and configuration. It is not presented as a replacement for a modern Raspberry Pi or as a general-purpose machine. Confirm the exact board revision, available software images, pinout, and included accessories before ordering; similar listing photos do not establish identical hardware.
Makita battery adapter: a niche power option
The reviewer’s 2025 summary says the tested adapter both charged a Makita battery and supplied power over USB-C and USB-A. It identifies an IP2366 integrated circuit and reports up to 140 W USB-C output in both directions, plus approximately 5 V at 4 A through USB-A. These are findings for the tested model and battery configuration, not a universal adapter specification.
Before buying, verify that the adapter explicitly supports your battery platform and exact battery model. Check connector fit, stated protection behavior, and the USB-C power profiles and cable rating required by the devices you intend to power. Do not infer safe charging or output capability from a similar-looking enclosure or a seller’s broad compatibility claim.

Peltier cup holder: novelty, not an efficient cooler
In the single cooling test described by GreatScott!’s 2025 summary, the tested holder cooled a 500 ml can from 22.2°C to about 18.2°C in 30 minutes; the reported efficiency was below 20%. The reviewer also found that it could heat and cool, but had no adjustable target temperature and its display differed by roughly 2–3°C.
Those results support treating it as an entertaining desk gadget for modest temperature changes, not as an efficient way to chill drinks. The measurement is one test of one product, not a benchmark for every Peltier cup holder.
What should you know about a portable USB-C soldering iron?
A marketplace buyer guide uses the Pinecil Version 2 as a documented reference, not as evidence that visually similar AliExpress irons share its features. The guide lists an OLED display, adjustable temperature from 100°C to 400°C, replaceable tips, and auto-standby. It says the Pinecil V2 accepts USB-C PD/QC 3.0 at 12–20 V and 3 A, or DC5525 at 12–24 V and 3 A, and suggests a capable 65 W, 20 V, 3 A USB-C PD supply for good performance. These specifications describe that model only. Pinecil’s product page is a useful place to check model-specific documentation.

For any portable iron, match the supply, cable, and input requirements rather than assuming that any USB-C charger will work well. A small iron can be convenient for portable, lower-thermal-mass jobs, but it may struggle to heat larger joints or parts that draw heat away quickly. Use a stable stand, keep the hot tip clear of combustible materials, and confirm that replacement tips are available for the exact model.

Wi-Fi SD card adapter: unreliable in the described test
GreatScott!’s review summary reports trouble with both exFAT and FAT32, says the tested adapter required ordinary FAT formatting, and describes inconsistent connections and failed file copies. It also says the device once crashed the tester’s computer. That is a poor basis for trusting it with important files; do not use it as the only copy or transfer path for data you cannot afford to lose.
PTC heater: do not treat a working heater as a safe tool
The reviewed heater reportedly reached about 235°C and could reflow solder, but the reviewer judged it unsafe because mains wiring was exposed near metal, hot surfaces were present, and proper earthing was lacking. Its ability to heat does not make it a suitable bargain soldering or workshop tool. Avoid mains-powered devices with unclear safety construction, exposed conductors, or inadequate earthing.

An AliExpress seller description for the ET693A lists a 96×96 infrared sensor and describes TISR processing that produces a 240×240 enhanced image. The first number is the stated detector resolution; the larger figure is software-enhanced output, not evidence of a 240×240 native sensor. The seller also lists a temperature range of −20°C to 550°C and accuracy of ±2°C or ±2% of reading, whichever is greater. These are seller-published specifications, and no independent test validating them is established here.
The seller’s Pro listing is described as adding a visible camera and macro lens. Confirm the exact variant and included optics in the listing; do not assume the standard and Pro versions have the same hardware. If a thermal camera is needed for consequential inspection, look for independent testing of the exact model and verify its measurement limits against the task.
What to check before ordering niche electronics
- Exact model and configuration: Match the product name, board revision, battery platform, or variant. Similar photos and repeated listing text do not prove identical hardware.
- Evidence for the core function: Prefer an independent test that exercises the feature you need. Ratings and order volume alone do not show repeatability or performance.
- Power compatibility: Confirm voltage, current, USB-C power profile, cable capacity, connector, and plug type. For battery adapters, check the exact battery platform and model-specific protections.
- Advertised versus native capability: Distinguish a sensor’s native resolution from software-enhanced output and a seller specification from an independently measured result.
- Setup and recovery: Check required formatting, serial tools, drivers, software images, or other prerequisites before relying on the device.
- Safety construction: Treat mains-connected heaters and high-current chargers as higher-risk purchases. Avoid products with exposed wiring or unclear protection and earthing.
- Regional details: UK buyers should verify plug type, keyboard layout where relevant, and applicable product markings; these checks vary by market.
Availability, seller identity, returns, and live prices are not established for a current eight-item roster here. Check the listing at the time of purchase, and do not assume that a tested product remains available in the same configuration.
