As of 15 October 2026, three assistants have clear, current first-party documentation for reading browser tabs: ChatGPT through its browser extension and desktop side-chat workflows, Gemini in Chrome, and Claude in Chrome. They are not equivalent. Gemini starts with the current Chrome tab and lets you explicitly share up to 10 recent tabs on desktop; Claude reads the tab displayed in its side panel and can compare tabs while taking browser actions; ChatGPT can bring an open tab into a conversation through its extension, with access governed by permissions, confirmations, allowlists and blocklists. None of these capabilities means an assistant automatically sees your entire browser history.
Which assistants can read open tabs?
The documented choices differ in scope, sharing controls and whether they can change a webpage. This table separates what each product can receive from your browser from what it can do after receiving it.
| Assistant | Tab context | Multiple tabs | Can take actions? | How access is enabled |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT browser extension | An open tab brought into a ChatGPT desktop or side chat; pages where you are already signed in can be included when the task needs them | No fixed limit is stated in the cited OpenAI documentation | Yes, subject to confirmations, allowlists and blocklists | Install the supported browser extension and grant its requested permissions |
| Gemini in Chrome | The current Chrome tab by default | Up to 10 recent open tabs across browser windows can be explicitly shared on desktop | The documented feature is focused on sharing and answering; action capability is not established here | Opt in to Gemini in Chrome, then add or remove tabs in its interface |
| Claude in Chrome | The tab displayed in the Claude side panel | Can summarize or compare content open across tabs | Yes: clicking, typing, navigation and form filling | Install the Chrome extension, grant permissions and enable the connector when prompted |
The evidence supports these three options. It does not establish a current, equivalent tab-reading feature for Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Brave Leo or other assistants, so their absence from this comparison is an evidence limit rather than a claim that they cannot read tabs.

What “read your tabs” actually means
It usually means shared page context, not continuous surveillance
A tab-reading assistant receives information from a page when that page is in scope for the conversation. The scope may be automatic for the current tab, or it may require you to select tabs explicitly. The documented controls do not describe an assistant silently ingesting every page you have ever opened.
#1 Best Overall
OpenAI distinguishes request-scoped access from unrestricted history collection. It notes that browser history can contain sensitive telemetry, internal URLs, search terms and activity from signed-in devices; relevant entries become context when requested for a task. A browser extension may still ask for broad browser permissions, so the permission prompt matters even when the product is designed to use context only for a particular request.
Reading and acting are separate capabilities
Reading lets an assistant summarize, extract fields, answer questions about a page or compare documents. Acting means it can interact with the page. Claude in Chrome is explicitly documented as able to click, type, navigate and fill forms. ChatGPT can act on sites through its extension, but the workflow uses confirmations and site controls. Gemini’s tab-sharing documentation establishes what it can see, not an equivalent set of browser-control actions.
ChatGPT: bring an open tab into a conversation
What it can see
OpenAI’s guidance says to use the Codex Chrome extension when a task needs your existing Chrome profile, signed-in session, open tabs or Chrome extensions. ChatGPT can use context from open tabs when a task needs it. In practical terms, a page you already have open can be supplied to a ChatGPT desktop or side chat, including pages where you are signed in, rather than forcing you to copy and paste the page manually.

OpenAI does not state a fixed maximum number of tabs for this workflow in the cited documentation. That means you should not assume a particular limit, nor assume that every open tab is included automatically. Bring the tab or tabs relevant to the request into the conversation and check the resulting context before asking for a conclusion.

What it can do after access
The extension can let ChatGPT act on websites. Confirmations, allowlists and blocklists are part of that control model. A confirmation prompt is an opportunity to inspect the target site, the proposed operation and any data that will be submitted before allowing the action. If a site is blocked or not on an allowlist, the task may stop even though the page is visible in Chrome.
Extension versus the built-in desktop browser
ChatGPT’s built-in desktop browser uses separate browser state. A login, cookie, extension or tab in that built-in browser is not the same session as the one in your regular Chrome profile. If a task depends on an existing login or an installed Chrome extension, use the supported browser-extension workflow and verify which browser state is active.
Gemini in Chrome: explicit sharing, with a 10-tab desktop limit
Default scope
Gemini in Chrome uses your current Chrome tab by default. Google’s documentation says you can share up to 10 of your recent open tabs across your browser windows on desktop. Sharing is explicit: use the Gemini interface to add tabs, and remove them when they are no longer relevant.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy the limit matters
The 10-tab ceiling applies to the documented desktop sharing feature and to recent open tabs across browser windows. It is not a statement that Chrome itself can have only 10 tabs, nor does it establish the same behavior on every device. If you need to compare more than 10 pages, narrow the set, combine information into a document, or run separate comparisons rather than assuming unseen tabs are included.
Rank #3
Workspace documents can expose account-level content
When a shared page is a Google Workspace document, Gemini may be able to access more of the underlying document through your Workspace account. The visible tab is therefore not always the full boundary: account permissions can determine what document content is available. Treat a shared work document as business data, and confirm that the signed-in Workspace account is the one you intend to use.
Stopping access
Google provides controls to stop sharing a tab and to turn off sharing the current tab by default. Use those controls before switching from a low-risk page to a confidential one, and remove tabs from the Gemini interface when a comparison is complete.
Claude in Chrome: active-tab reading plus browser control
Side-panel access
Anthropic states that the Claude side panel reads the tab you are on with no extra setup after the Chrome extension is installed and permitted. This makes the active tab the starting point: open the page, open the side panel and ask for a summary, extraction or explanation of that page.
Cross-tab comparison
Claude in Chrome can summarize or compare what is open across tabs. That is useful for tasks such as reconciling two policy pages, comparing product specifications or checking whether several dashboards show the same value. The assistant still needs the relevant pages to be available in the browser context; do not interpret “across tabs” as access to your complete history.
Actions and existing logins
Anthropic documents browser actions including clicking, typing, navigating and filling forms. It also describes access to internal dashboards, legacy systems and vendor portals using existing logins. Those capabilities make Claude more than a read-only summarizer: a request can move from understanding a page to changing data or submitting a form. Keep approval in the loop for any action that has an external effect.
Connector setup
Install the Chrome extension, grant its permissions and enable the connector when Claude requests it. If the side panel can read a public page but cannot work with an internal portal, check whether the connector is enabled and whether Chrome is signed in to the account that has access.
Automatic versus explicit tab sharing
| Question | ChatGPT extension | Gemini in Chrome | Claude in Chrome |
|---|---|---|---|
| What starts in scope? | An open tab brought into a desktop or side chat when the task needs it | The current Chrome tab | The tab shown in the side panel |
| How are additional tabs added? | OpenAI does not state a fixed tab-count or a universal automatic rule | Explicitly add tabs in Gemini, up to 10 on desktop | Claude can work across open tabs through its Chrome context |
| Can it use an existing signed-in session? | Yes, when the extension and permissions provide the needed Chrome-profile context | Workspace pages may use the signed-in Workspace account | Yes, including documented internal portals and vendor systems |
| Can it change a page? | Yes, with confirmations and site controls | Not established by the cited tab-sharing documentation | Yes: click, type, navigate and fill forms |
How to set up each workflow
ChatGPT
- Install the supported ChatGPT browser extension in the Chrome profile that contains the tabs, logins and extensions your task requires.
- Review and grant the browser permissions it requests. Broad permissions can expose sensitive page metadata, so install it only in a profile you are comfortable connecting to the assistant.
- Open ChatGPT desktop or its side chat, then bring the relevant open tab into the conversation when your task needs that context.
- For an action, read the proposed operation and approve it only after checking the site, account and data involved. Use allowlists and blocklists to constrain where actions are permitted.
- If a login or extension is missing, confirm that you are using the regular Chrome-profile workflow rather than ChatGPT’s built-in browser, which has separate state.
Gemini in Chrome
- Opt in to Gemini in Chrome.
- Start with the current Chrome tab, which is the default context.
- In Gemini’s tab-sharing interface, add the additional recent tabs you want compared. On desktop, the documented maximum is 10 tabs across browser windows.
- Remove tabs after the task, and use the control that turns off sharing the current tab by default when you do not want new pages included.
- Before sharing a Workspace page, verify the signed-in account and remember that account permissions may expose more of the underlying document than the visible portion.
Claude in Chrome
- Install the Claude in Chrome extension in the Chrome profile that contains the target pages.
- Grant the requested permissions and enable the connector when needed.
- Open the target page and use the side panel; the panel can read the tab you are on.
- For a comparison, keep the relevant pages open and ask Claude to compare them, naming the criteria you care about.
- For clicking, typing, navigation or form filling, inspect every proposed step and stop before submission if the destination, account or values are not exactly right.
Signed-in pages, history and sensitive data
A signed-in tab can contain information that is invisible to an anonymous visitor: account names, private messages, order details, internal dashboards or documents. All three documented workflows can operate in contexts tied to an account, but the boundaries differ. ChatGPT’s extension uses the existing Chrome profile when the task needs it; Gemini can use the signed-in Workspace account for shared documents; Claude can use existing logins for internal systems and portals.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That does not make browser history an automatic prompt transcript. OpenAI warns that history may include internal URLs, search terms, telemetry and activity from signed-in devices, and says relevant entries become context when requested. Treat history and tab permissions as separate decisions: allowing an extension to interact with Chrome is broader than choosing one page for a single summary.
Best Value
Prompt-injection and permission risks
Webpages can contain hostile instructions
Anthropic warns that hidden instructions in webpages, emails or forms can redirect an agent. A page may tell the assistant to reveal secrets, ignore your request, upload a file or submit an unsafe form. Those words are page content, not authority. Give the assistant your instruction separately and treat every instruction embedded in the page as untrusted.
Use a review gate for actions
- Read the destination domain, account and exact fields before approving a click or form submission.
- Do not paste passwords, one-time codes or recovery keys into a chat merely because a page asks for them.
- Limit sharing to the tabs needed for the task; close or remove confidential pages when finished.
- Prefer read-only summaries for high-risk pages and perform consequential edits yourself.
- Revoke an extension or connector permission if you no longer use the workflow.
Which assistant fits which tab task?
- Choose ChatGPT’s extension when the job depends on an existing Chrome profile, signed-in session or Chrome extension, and you want site actions constrained by confirmations, allowlists and blocklists.
- Choose Gemini in Chrome when you want a clearly bounded, explicit comparison set and the desktop task fits within 10 shared tabs, especially when the source is a Workspace document tied to your account.
- Choose Claude in Chrome when you need the active tab summarized or several open tabs compared and may also need clicking, typing, navigation or form filling.
The safest choice is the one whose sharing model matches the minimum context required. A current-tab summary needs less exposure than a multi-tab comparison, and a read-only answer needs less authority than an agent that can submit forms.
Common reasons tab access appears not to work
| Symptom | Likely explanation | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The assistant answers from general knowledge | The page was not brought into scope | For ChatGPT, bring the open tab into the chat; for Gemini, confirm the tab is shared; for Claude, open the side panel on the target tab |
| A second or third page is missing from a Gemini comparison | Additional tabs require explicit sharing, and desktop sharing is capped at 10 | Use Gemini’s add/remove controls and count the shared tabs |
| A private portal cannot be opened | The browser profile, login or connector is not available | Use the profile with the existing session; for Claude, enable the connector; for ChatGPT, do not switch to the separate built-in browser state |
| An action pauses for approval | The assistant is enforcing a confirmation or site-control boundary | Review the proposed operation and adjust allowlists or permissions only if the destination is trusted |
Bottom line
ChatGPT, Gemini in Chrome and Claude in Chrome can all read browser-tab content under documented conditions, but none should be treated as having unrestricted visibility into your browser. Gemini offers the clearest explicit multi-tab limit, Claude combines tab comparison with the broadest documented browser actions, and ChatGPT is the profile-aware option for tasks that need existing sessions and extensions. Share only the pages required, verify account context, and approve actions as if the page itself could be trying to influence the assistant.
