In the 2024 snapshot, Max was the broad streaming option in the United States, while Netflix carried a 22-film Studio Ghibli catalog in many territories outside the U.S. and Japan. Neither service meant every film was available in every country: rights varied by title and territory, and these dated announcements do not confirm what is streaming today.
Where to stream Studio Ghibli films in 2024
| Where you are | 2024 streaming route | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Max. Warner Bros. Discovery announced a multiyear U.S. catalog licensing extension with GKIDS. | Check the current Max catalog and subscription terms; the licensing announcement describes the 2024 route, not today’s availability. |
| Outside the U.S. and Japan | Netflix said 22 Studio Ghibli films were in its international catalog. | Availability depended on country and film. France, for example, had a later 2025 Netflix window for The Boy and the Heron. |
| Japan | The cited Netflix catalog announcements exclude Japan. | The announcements do not establish Japan’s complete streaming or purchase options. |
Netflix’s 2024 announcement explicitly cautioned that “The distribution of countries and territories differs depending on the title.” A catalog-wide count is therefore not a guarantee that a particular film is available in your local Netflix library.

Where to watch The Boy and the Heron
The 2024 streaming date depended on your location: Max announced a U.S. debut on September 6, 2024, while Netflix scheduled the film for October 7, 2024, outside the U.S. and Japan. France was an exception to that international Netflix date, with release deferred to 2025.
These are historical release announcements, not confirmation of the film’s current listing. Check the service in your country for its present availability.

Where to watch Grave of the Fireflies
Netflix announced that Grave of the Fireflies would stream in over 190 countries, excluding Japan, starting September 16, 2024. That platform-published figure describes the announced release footprint; it does not establish availability in Japan or guarantee that the film remains in every listed country’s catalog now.
What if Netflix or Max does not have the film?
Streaming is not the only way to look for a Ghibli title. A fan resource, studioghibli.jp, reports North American GKIDS Blu-ray and DVD distribution, digital purchase or rental listings, and theatrical screenings. These options need a title- and location-specific check rather than assuming every film is offered everywhere.
- Physical copies: Check the exact film, edition, language options, and region compatibility before buying a Blu-ray or DVD.
- Digital stores: The guide names Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Google TV, and Fandango at Home as possible purchase or rental outlets. Listings vary by title and territory.
- Theatrical screenings: Look for local schedules; a screening is event-specific rather than a permanent viewing option.
Subtitles and dubbing
When Netflix announced its initial international Ghibli rollout in 2020, it described support for 28 subtitle languages and up to 20 dubbing languages. Those are platform-published rollout figures, not a promise that every film in every territory has every language option. Check the audio and subtitle menu on the individual title page before choosing a service or edition.

- Search for the film by its exact title in the streaming service available to you; do not rely only on a catalog count or another country’s listing.
- Confirm that the result is playable in your country and review its current audio and subtitle options.
- If it is not listed, check a local digital storefront, physical-media listing, or cinema schedule for that title and verify edition and region details.
For the 2024 international Netflix rollout, Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki said: “In this day and age, there are various great ways a film can reach audiences. We’ve listened to our fans and have made the definitive decision to stream our film catalogue. We hope people around the world will discover the world of Studio Ghibli through this experience”.
