The best place to stay on the Isle of Skye depends on the sights you plan to visit and whether you will have a car. Portree is a practical all-round base, especially for Trotternish and town services; Broadford, Kyleakin and Sleat suit southern itineraries and mainland or ferry connections; and Dunvegan or the western peninsulas offer a quieter setting near western sights. Without a car, start with a larger settlement and confirm that transport serves your destinations on your dates.
Compare Skye’s main places to stay
Choose a base to reduce backtracking, not because one village is close to every attraction. This is a geographic planning guide: the best fit depends on your route, transport and the services you need nearby.
| Base | Best suited to | Trade-offs and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Portree | First visits, Trotternish-focused trips, travellers who want a wider choice of places to eat, and a practical starting point for car-free planning. | It is popular, and staying there does not guarantee convenient transport to every attraction. Check actual schedules for your dates. Local tourism guidance; regional transport guidance. |
| Broadford | Southern Skye itineraries, a practical service hub, and arrivals via the Skye Bridge or onward journeys toward the south. | Less convenient for a Trotternish-focused trip than Portree; check onward transport if you will not drive. Regional travel guidance. |
| Kyleakin | A bridge-side stop and a convenient mainland connection. | Its southern position means more travel to northern sights. Compare local lodging and meal options. VisitScotland; regional travel guidance. |
| Sleat and Armadale | Southern itineraries or trips organized around the Armadale ferry. | Check ferry operating details and onward transport. Services and journey times depend on the specific location. VisitScotland; local tourism guidance. |
| Dunvegan and the western peninsulas | A quieter stay, western sights, scenery and more space. | Shops and restaurants may be farther away, so plan meals and essentials. Local tourism guidance. |
| Staffin or Uig | A north-focused stay when most of the itinerary is concentrated nearby. | These are more location-specific choices. Check current accommodation, transport and meal options. Local route-planning guidance. |
Choose a base around your itinerary
For a first visit or Trotternish focus, consider Portree
Portree combines town services and a useful position for exploring Trotternish, making it a flexible starting point for many first-time itineraries. It is still worth checking how you will reach each planned sight: convenience in town is not the same as direct transport across the island.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For southern sights or mainland connections, look south
Broadford, Kyleakin and Sleat each make more sense when the itinerary emphasizes southern Skye, a bridge-side arrival or the Armadale ferry. Pick the specific place based on the sights and connections you need, rather than treating these locations as interchangeable.
#1 Best Overall
For a quieter western stay, plan around services
Dunvegan and the western peninsulas can put you closer to western scenery and away from a larger settlement. Check the distance to food, groceries and other essentials before booking, particularly if you expect to arrive late or do not want to drive for dinner.
For a concentrated northern trip, stay in the north
Staffin or Uig may suit a trip centered on their surrounding area. They are less general-purpose choices, so confirm that your accommodation, meal options and transport work for the exact dates and plans.
Decide how you will get around
If you will drive
Driving offers flexibility for remote places, but some Skye roads are single track with passing places. VisitScotland notes that driving is the preferred option for many visitors because it offers flexibility and access to more remote spots, while advising drivers to remember those road conditions: VisitScotland’s Isle of Skye accommodation and destination guidance. Allow time for the roads rather than judging a journey by map distance alone.
If you will travel without a car
Begin by comparing Portree, Broadford and Dunvegan as possible bases, then verify that buses or tours reach the places you want at the times you need. Portree is described as a practical transport starting point, but that is not a guarantee of any particular service. Check current operator information for your dates; an orientation map is not a live timetable. Transport guidance; route map and local planning guidance.

Plan arrivals, meals and transport before booking
- List your priorities. Choose the two or three areas or sights that matter most, then select the base that reduces backtracking.
- Match the base to your transport. If driving, account for single-track roads and passing places. If not, verify actual bus or tour service to your planned destinations.
- Check accommodation logistics. Ask about parking and arrival arrangements, especially for a remote stay or a late arrival.
- Confirm nearby essentials. Check where you can eat and buy what you need, rather than assuming services are close to a rural booking.
- Verify connections for your dates. Skye can be reached by the Skye Bridge or by the Mallaig–Armadale ferry; the Glenelg–Kylerhea ferry is another crossing. Check current ferry operating details before relying on one. VisitScotland.
- Book ahead for spring and summer. Local tourism guidance recommends booking accommodation early for these seasons. Local tourism guidance.
- Plan your route in advance. A map or guidebook can help with orientation; check bus schedules and other current details with operators rather than relying on a route map alone. Local route-planning guidance.
What to verify before you commit
- Whether your chosen base is near the sights you most want to see.
- Whether transport runs when and where you need it, if you are not driving.
- Where you will eat and buy essentials, particularly in quieter areas.
- Parking and check-in arrangements at the specific accommodation.
- Current ferry details if your route depends on a crossing.
Accommodation availability, prices, bus and ferry schedules, and road conditions can change. Confirm them with the accommodation provider and relevant transport operator for your travel dates.
