There is no single best place to sell an old painting. First document the work and get a qualified view of what it may be; then compare the likely money you will keep, time to sale, buyer reach, fees, control, and handling involved with an auction house, an art dealer, and an online marketplace. An auction estimate is not a guaranteed selling price, and any venue may decline the work.
Where can you sell an old painting?
Your main options are an auction house, a dealer or gallery, or an online marketplace. The right route depends on the painting, whether you need a quick sale, and how much work you are prepared to do yourself.

For any route, compare written terms and likely net proceeds rather than headline estimates or asking prices. There is no established market-wide figure that reliably compares seller proceeds or time to sale across these three routes.

Gather enough information for a specialist to assess the painting without making changes that could affect it. Photograph the front, back, frame, signature or maker’s mark, and any damage or repairs in clear colour images. Record the artist if known, medium, dimensions, how and when you acquired it, and any provenance, exhibition, purchase, restoration, or appraisal documents.

Christie’s says its initial review asks for images and descriptive and provenance information; supporting authentication or appraisal paperwork is optional at that stage. Sotheby’s says its specialists consider the artist, origin, provenance, execution date, materials, dimensions, rarity, subject, condition, and comparable sales. - Do not clean or restore the painting, remove its frame, or make attribution claims based only on a signature or family story before consulting a qualified specialist.
- Ask what the initial review covers and what further examination or documentation may be needed.
- Do not assume an auction house will authenticate the work: Christie’s explicitly says it does not authenticate artwork. Check its selling guidance.
How to find out what an old painting is worth
Ask an auction specialist or a dealer who knows the painting’s artist or category for an opinion on sale potential. Treat an estimate as an opinion about a possible sale through that channel, not a promise of what you will receive. Christie’s says its auction estimates are opinions and should not be relied on as predictions or guarantees; Sotheby’s calls its estimates non-binding and says the reserve is established as part of consignment. Look for completed sales of genuinely comparable works, not just asking prices. Compare the same artist and period where possible, along with medium, dimensions, condition, provenance, and sale venue. A result may be affected by unusual bidding circumstances; the IRS notes this in its guidance on donated property. See IRS Publication 561.

How to compare offers and auction terms
Ask each intermediary to show, in writing, how it calculates the amount you are likely to keep. Include commission, insurance, photography or cataloguing charges, shipping, applicable taxes or duties, and any extra fee if the painting sells above an agreed estimate. Ask whether charges apply if it does not sell, and what happens to the work afterward.
Christie’s states that its seller commission is a percentage of the hammer price under agreed terms, and that it may charge a 2% performance commission if an item exceeds its agreed high estimate. That is a Christie’s stated policy, not an industry-wide rate; confirm the current terms for your consignment. Read Christie’s selling guidance.

At auction, the hammer price is the winning bid before buyer charges. Christie’s says a buyer’s invoice can add buyer’s premium and applicable taxes and shipping-related expenses. Those charges do not tell you what the seller receives, so review the seller’s own consignment agreement. Christie’s buying guidance.

Choose by the terms and the likely fit of the painting, not by assuming one route always pays more. An auction house can bring specialist handling and auction-bidder exposure if it accepts the work; the final result still depends on bidding. A dealer may make an outright offer or take the painting on consignment, so clarify which arrangement is proposed. A marketplace may give you more control, but only if it accepts your item and you can manage the transaction and delivery.

Before choosing, ask each serious option for its expected net to you, the basis for its estimate or offer, the expected timeline, the services included, and what happens if the work does not sell. There is no universal dealer commission or reliable market-wide comparison of sale time established here.
When do appraisal and tax rules matter?
For U.S. tax situations, the IRS Art Appraisal Services page describes a statement-of-value procedure that generally applies to art appraised at $50,000 or more. That is a tax-administration threshold, not a minimum selling price. The page also lists a user fee of $8,400 for one to three items and $800 for each additional item; confirm the current fee and procedure directly with the IRS before relying on them. IRS valuation guidance does not determine an individual seller’s income-tax liability, and tax treatment depends on the facts and jurisdiction. For a significant sale, inheritance, donation, or estate matter, consult a qualified tax professional and an appropriately qualified appraiser.
