For NHL-related fanfiction, start with Archive of Our Own (AO3) and search hockey fandom and relationship tags. For original hockey romance online, browse Inkitt’s Hockey Romance category. For a professionally published book, Rachel Reid’s Heated Rivalry is a hockey romance available through retailers listed by its publisher. These are different kinds of reading: fanworks, original online stories, and published books have different discovery tools and rules.
Choose the kind of hockey story you want
- NHL or hockey fanfiction: Works created by fans, including stories about hockey teams, characters, or real people. AO3 is a fanwork archive; a University of Waterloo repository search result discusses men’s hockey real-person fanfiction posted there.
- Original online hockey romance: New stories discovered through a genre category rather than a particular team or athlete. Inkitt has a Hockey Romance category.
- Professionally published hockey romance: Books released by a publisher and sold through booksellers. Rachel Reid’s Heated Rivalry is one example.
Find NHL fanfiction on AO3
On AO3, use the search and tag system to find hockey-related fandoms and relationship tags, then narrow results to suit your preferences. Check each work’s description and tags as well as its rating and archive warnings before reading. AO3 says readers are responsible for observing creator-provided ratings and warnings, and cautions that some works may not carry full warnings.
AO3 is intended for fanworks, not original fiction marketed as fanfiction. Its Content Policy prohibits commercial promotion on the service. It also says that crediting an original creator does not give someone permission to upload, podfic, or translate another person’s work. A story’s use of real athletes’ names, or a credit to a source, does not by itself establish permission.

Browse original hockey romance on Inkitt
Inkitt lists a Hockey Romance category for discovering online stories. Treat it as a genre starting point, not as an index of NHL fanfiction: Inkitt’s Help and Support article says its Recently Updated and Recently Completed featured shelves must exclude fanfiction.
#1 Best Overall
Before starting a story, review its description and content information, and check whether it is complete if that matters to you. A genre label alone does not tell you whether a story is finished, what it contains, or whether it is fanfiction or an original work.
Read a published hockey romance
Rachel Reid’s Heated Rivalry is identified by its publisher, Harlequin, as a hockey romance. Harlequin lists Amazon among its retailer options; Rachel Reid’s official book page also identifies the title and genre. For related books, the publisher’s Game Changers series page is a useful place to explore the series.
Retailer listings, editions, formats, and availability vary by country and can change. Check the bookseller serving your region for the current ebook, print, or other format options.

What “free hockey romance” means in practice
Do not assume every story or book on a platform is free, available without an account, or offered in every region. Check the specific work or retailer listing for its access and format details. AO3 is a fanwork archive, while Inkitt is a story-discovery platform; a published book such as Heated Rivalry follows its bookseller’s availability and terms.
