Place a portable air purifier in the room where people spend the most time, then keep its air intake and outlet clear. Follow the unit’s manual for the right surface, orientation and clearance: there is no universal wall gap or best height for every design. The purifier also needs enough capacity for the whole area it is expected to serve.
Choose the room people use most
A portable purifier cleans the air in the space it serves, so prioritize the room where people spend the most time. That may be a bedroom, living room or home office. If someone vulnerable to illness spends most of their time in a particular room, prioritize that room. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises placing a cleaner “in the room you spend the most time in or where vulnerable people spend the most time.” EPA guidance on indoor air and coronavirus.
Keep the intake and outlet unobstructed
Leave the purifier’s air path open. Curtains, furniture, walls and other objects can interfere if they block the intake or outlet. A central spot can be practical, but it is not essential when air can flow freely around the unit. Do not run it inside a closet. Use the manual for wall clearance and height
Air purifiers differ: some are designed for the floor, others for a tabletop or wall mounting. Read the instructions for the specific model and follow its requirements for placement, orientation and clearance. ENERGY STAR also recommends consulting the accompanying manual. Size the purifier for the area it must serve
Check the manufacturer’s recommended room area and the unit’s Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR). For an open-plan room, consider the full area the purifier is expected to serve—not just the space around one chair or sofa. Common room-size estimates use an 8-foot ceiling as their basis, so a higher ceiling can affect how well the recommendation fits your space. Adjust placement for illness concerns and comfort
If someone is isolating with an airborne infection
Place the air cleaner in the isolation room. Arrange its airflow so it does not blow from one person toward another; a purifier is not stand-alone protection against infection. EPA guidance on indoor air and coronavirus.

If the airflow feels uncomfortable
Orient the discharge so it does not create an uncomfortable draft. The EPA advises redirecting airflow if needed, while keeping the intake and outlet clear.
Support placement with operation and maintenance
For a specific room, a purifier is more effective when exterior doors and windows are closed, according to the EPA. Clean or replace filters as directed by the manufacturer; a well-chosen spot cannot make up for neglected maintenance or a unit that is too small for the area.
