Cloud object storage such as Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, and Amazon S3 can store and serve live images, but a live image bucket is not a complete website backup. Back up the site’s files and database separately, keep recoverable copies, and test a restoration.
Choose storage based on whether you need delivery, recovery, or both
“Where to host images” can mean two different things: where visitors fetch the images your site currently uses, and where you keep copies that will help you restore the site after data loss. One storage location can sometimes serve both purposes, but the jobs have different requirements.
- Live media delivery: the storage and delivery path must let your site or visitors retrieve the intended images, with suitable access controls, HTTPS, and caching.
- Backup and recovery: a backup must preserve the site components you need to restore, not only the images currently visible on the site. Depending on the site, that includes the database, files, code, configuration, and recoverable prior copies.
A public bucket can be useful for serving images, but public accessibility does not make it a backup. Conversely, a private archive can be useful for recovery but is not automatically configured to deliver images to site visitors. Decide which job each storage location serves before moving files.
Where should you store website images?
Keep them in the web host’s media library
For a smaller site, this is usually the simplest starting point. The CMS and its media library stay together, and the hosting provider’s existing backup process may already include the images. Do not assume it does: check what the host backs up, how often it does so, how long it retains copies, and how you would restore them. Those details depend on the particular host and plan.

Use object storage for live media
Cloud object storage is a practical option for static website assets, including images. Cloudflare R2 and Backblaze B2 both document S3-compatible APIs, which can make it easier to use existing S3-oriented tools and integrations. Backblaze recommends its S3-compatible API for new integrations. Amazon Web Services describes S3 as suitable for relatively static or slow-changing assets such as images and videos, with CloudFront available for edge caching and delivery. In its Web Application Hosting in the AWS Cloud whitepaper, AWS says, “Amazon S3 provides a highly available and redundant object store.” That describes the object store; it does not establish that your full website has a recoverable backup.
- Cloudflare R2 offers buckets, an S3-compatible API, public-bucket delivery, and presigned URLs for temporary private access.
- Backblaze B2 is general-purpose object storage, distinct from Backblaze’s personal-computer backup product. Its documentation covers S3-compatible integrations and serving public website content through a custom domain and Cloudflare CDN.
- Amazon S3 can store relatively static media and work with CloudFront for edge caching and delivery.
None is universally the cheapest or best choice. Compare your CMS or tool’s API support, access requirements, expected storage and traffic, delivery setup, geography, migration effort, and current charges. Storage, requests, retrieval, and bandwidth may have separate pricing; check each provider’s current pricing and limits before choosing.
Keep recovery copies separate from live delivery
A production bucket can be deleted, misconfigured, or become inaccessible along with other production resources. Keep a separately managed backup workflow that copies the site’s required files and database to an off-site destination, preserves versions or other recoverable copies where needed, and protects the credentials used to access it. Test restoration rather than relying on a successful backup-job status alone.
Backblaze lists tools and services that can back up to B2, including rclone, Duplicati, Synology Hyper Backup, QNAP Hybrid Backup Sync, and Arq Backup. A tool’s presence in that list does not establish that it is configured correctly for your site; confirm which components it copies and how to restore them.

Compare providers and setups with the right questions
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does your CMS, backup tool, or code support the provider’s API? | Compatibility affects setup effort and how easily you can migrate. R2 and B2 document S3-compatible APIs; check the integration’s specific requirements. |
| Will the bucket be public, private, or split by purpose? | Public access can support image delivery; private storage is generally more appropriate for archives. Publish only assets intended to be public. |
| How will you configure a custom domain, HTTPS, and CDN? | These pieces determine how visitors reach live media and how it is delivered. Provider-specific setup and restrictions differ. |
| Where are your users and bucket, and how will caching work? | Geography, request origin, access patterns, and edge caching affect performance and freshness. Cached objects may not show updates immediately. |
| How will you move existing images? | Transfer size, retry support, and compatible bulk tools influence migration time and failure recovery. |
| What does the complete storage and delivery path cost? | Check current storage, request, retrieval, and bandwidth charges rather than assuming storage is the only billable component. |
| Can you restore the whole site? | Confirm that the backup includes the database and other required files, retains recoverable copies, and has been tested with a restoration. |
Configure image storage without exposing the wrong data
Set access deliberately
Public delivery is appropriate only for files meant to be public. Backblaze documents that a public B2 bucket can be read without credentials; Cloudflare documents presigned URLs for temporary private access to R2 objects. Keep API keys and other credentials secret, and scope credentials to the buckets and permissions the task requires. R2’s setup documentation covers choosing a bucket location and storage class and creating bucket-scoped API credentials.
Use HTTPS and scope custom-domain routing
Backblaze’s guide to serving public B2 content through Cloudflare CDN maps a hostname to a B2 origin and cautions that an overly broad mapping can permit requests for other public buckets. Follow the current instructions and scope paths to the intended bucket. The guide says B2 requires HTTPS; verify the current dashboard steps and domain configuration when setting it up.
For image replacements, choose cache-control metadata or cache rules that reflect how often files change. A long-lived cache can reduce repeat fetches, but it can also leave visitors seeing an older image after an update. A versioned filename or an intentional cache-invalidation process can help when a changed image must appear promptly.
Plan transfers for size and reliability
Cloudflare describes a single PUT as appropriate for small to medium uploads and recommends multipart uploads for large files or when reliability matters. Multipart transfers allow failed parts to be retried instead of restarting the entire upload. For bulk moves, rclone and other S3-compatible tools can help; validate a transfer by comparing expected objects and checking that the site can retrieve representative files before switching traffic.

Move a site’s images to object storage
- Inventory the source. Identify the CMS media directory, image URLs referenced in content or theme code, approximate file volume, and whether any images are private or user-specific.
- Choose a destination and access policy. Decide whether the bucket serves public media, holds private backup copies, or has separate areas for each purpose. Select a provider your CMS or transfer tool supports.
- Set up the bucket and credentials. Configure the location, storage class, permissions, and any required domain or CDN. Keep credentials out of public code and limit their scope.
- Copy existing files. Use the provider’s supported tools or an S3-compatible transfer client. For large or reliability-sensitive transfers to R2, use multipart upload as Cloudflare recommends.
- Verify delivery before switching references. Check representative image URLs, file types, access behavior, HTTPS, and caching. Compare the destination inventory with the source so missing objects are caught before cutover.
- Update the CMS or site configuration. Change the media origin or integration settings, then check important pages and any responsive or generated image variants.
- Keep a rollback path and separate backup. Retain the original files until the new setup is verified. Ensure an independent backup includes the database and other site components, then test recovery.
Why storage location and cache behavior affect performance
Moving images to object storage does not guarantee faster pages. Cloudflare identifies bucket geography, request origin, and access patterns as factors in R2 read performance. A CDN or edge cache can reduce latency by serving frequently requested content closer to visitors, but cached objects may not reflect changes immediately. Consider where visitors are, how often images change, and whether your delivery configuration caches them; test the actual site rather than assuming a bucket alone improves performance.
Reliability also depends on the entire path: correct permissions, valid DNS and HTTPS, the application’s image URLs, and the availability of the components serving the files. A public origin that is misconfigured can break images even while the objects remain in storage. Keep an operational copy and a restoration plan rather than treating live delivery as your only safeguard.

Common problems and fixes
Images return an access error
Check whether the bucket or object is private, whether the application has the required credentials, and whether the URL is intended for public delivery. Do not make a bucket public merely to fix an error if it contains non-public files; use an appropriate private-access method instead.

Images work at the provider URL but not on the custom domain
Review DNS, origin mapping, HTTPS, and path scope. In the B2 and Cloudflare setup, verify that the mapping targets the intended bucket rather than allowing broader access than intended.
An updated image still looks old
Check cache-control metadata and CDN cache rules. Cached data may not update immediately; invalidate the relevant cache or use a versioned image URL when you need a new asset to appear promptly.
A large upload fails partway through
For R2, use multipart upload for large or reliability-sensitive files so failed parts can be retried rather than restarting the whole transfer. For a migration, use a transfer method that supports retries and verify the resulting object inventory.

Frequently asked questions
Should I use S3 for website images?
S3 is a reasonable option for relatively static website media, and AWS describes using CloudFront for edge caching and delivery. Whether it fits depends on your integration, access policy, delivery setup, migration needs, and current total charges.
Does image hosting count as a website backup?
No. Images stored for live delivery do not establish that the database, code, configuration, and prior recoverable copies are backed up.
Can I use the same provider for live images and backups?
You can use object storage in both workflows, but keep the backup process and recoverable copies deliberate and separately managed. Ensure the backup covers all required site components and test a restore.
