Snapchat’s documented speedometer icon is in Director Mode, where it controls how quickly the camera captures video. It does not show your driving speed. The old Speed Filter that displayed travel speed was removed in 2021.
How to find and use Camera Speed
- Open Snapchat to the Camera screen.
- Tap the Director Mode control.
- Tap the speedometer icon.
- Choose a camera capture speed, then record your video.
Snapchat describes Camera Speed as a Director Mode tool for setting how quickly the camera captures video, helping create transitions and dramatic effects. The support instructions do not list the available speed choices. Snapchat’s Camera Speed instructions document the steps.
Camera Speed is not a driving-speed display
The icon is easy to mistake for Snapchat’s former Speed Filter, but the two features did different things. Camera Speed changes video capture; the discontinued Speed Filter displayed a person’s travel speed on a Snap after capture.

In a June 17, 2021 report, iMore quoted a Snap spokeswoman saying the Speed Filter “is barely used by Snapchatters” and that the company was removing it. The iMore report attributes that explanation to Snap.

What to check if you cannot find the speedometer
Snapchat’s public help page documents the Director Mode path, but does not explain whether availability differs by phone platform, account, region, or app build. It also does not provide a specific fix if the control is missing, so a reinstall or settings change cannot be promised to restore it.
If you are looking for a Lens rather than Camera Speed, Snapchat says Lens availability can change. It recommends browsing Community Lenses in Lens Explorer and checking again later. Its Lens availability guidance explains this distinction.

Filters and Lenses are different, too
A Filter is a design overlay you add after taking a Snap: swipe across the preview to browse available Filters. Lenses are separate experiences, often involving augmented-reality effects; their availability can change. Snapchat explains the post-capture workflow in its guide to adding a Filter. If a time or temperature element is missing, Snapchat advises checking the sticker drawer.

Why the old Speed Filter disappeared
The former travel-speed overlay drew safety criticism because it could encourage people to use Snapchat while moving or driving. A June 17, 2021 report described earlier changes to the feature, including making it a less visible sticker, adding a “Don’t Snap and drive” warning, and limiting it to 35 mph. Those are historical details about the discontinued feature, not current Camera Speed settings or a statement about current legal status. 9to5Mac’s contemporaneous report covers the removal and safety concerns.
