BMW owner’s manuals explain how to operate a vehicle; factory repair information covers diagnosis and workshop procedures. For an owner’s manual, start with BMW’s official site or Driver’s Guide app for your market. For repair instructions, North American users should use BMW Techinfo and its ISTA or AIR applications; users elsewhere should check BMW Group AOS.
Choose the right kind of BMW information
- Owner’s manual: explains controls, features, and vehicle operation.
- Maintenance guidance: identifies scheduled service tasks and intervals for the vehicle.
- Workshop repair information: covers fault diagnosis, repair instructions, wiring diagrams, and technical data. BMW provides this through technical-information systems rather than the owner’s manual lookup.
Find an owner’s manual for your BMW
United States
BMW USA’s Digital Owner’s Manual lookup asks for the vehicle’s full 17-digit VIN. BMW says the VIN can be found on the windshield or inside the driver-side doorjamb, and notes that the online lookup is available for select model years.
BMW also lists an in-app route: in the My BMW app, open Profile > Help & Contact > Driver’s Guide. Install the BMW Driver’s Guide app to access the manual PDF, then select PDF > Owner’s Manual.
Recommended Free Tools
United Kingdom
BMW UK offers Know Your BMW, which creates a personalized guide and videos when you enter the last seven characters of the VIN. The BMW Driver’s Guide app uses the vehicle’s VIN to unlock its model-specific manual and animated guides; BMW lists the app on the App Store and Google Play.

Other markets
Manual availability and the appropriate portal can vary by market and model year. Use the BMW owner site or app for the vehicle’s country, and check that the selected manual matches the vehicle’s market, model, and year rather than relying on a guide for a similar BMW.
Find factory repair procedures and diagnostic information
United States and Canada: BMW Techinfo
BMW’s North American technical-information sites serve users in the United States and Canada. Creating an account and maintaining an active subscription are required. BMW describes Techinfo as covering BMW cars and SAVs, with resources that include service bulletins, operating-fluid specifications, generic OBD information, tool and training materials, technical videos, and limited legacy repair information for vehicles before model year 2000.

For repair procedures, BMW identifies two applications:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- ISTA provides fault-code diagnosis, test plans, repair instructions, technical data, wiring diagrams, and P-code lookup.
- AIR provides repair instructions and related labor and parts information.
Do not treat the TIS general search as a workshop-manual search. BMW says that search is intended for service bulletins; use AIR or ISTA to find repair instructions. The available information can depend on the vehicle and region, and BMW’s technical documentation is intended for servicing and repairing unmodified vehicles made for North America.

Outside the United States and Canada: BMW Group AOS
BMW directs users outside the United States and Canada to BMW Group AOS for technical repair information. Check the applications and vehicle coverage available for your country. AOS’s VIN-based rescue-information lookup supports vehicles from 2015 onward; BMW advises manually selecting the brand for earlier vehicles. That year guidance applies to the rescue-information lookup, not necessarily to every AOS service.
Check current BMW maintenance guidance
For routine scheduled maintenance, BMW USA directs owners to the vehicle’s Maintenance Service Display and Maintenance Booklet. Its Service and Warranty Books page provides model selection for relevant books. BMW says new vehicles start with Ultimate Care maintenance coverage for three years or 36,000 miles; coverage and terms depend on the vehicle and market, so confirm the current terms for the specific BMW.

If you prefer a printed repair reference
A printed model-specific repair book may be useful, but verify the exact BMW series or generation, model-year range, engine, and edition before buying. A book should not be treated as BMW’s current VIN-specific owner’s manual or as a substitute for current factory repair information.
