If your local Post Office closes, check another Post Office branch, a nearby Banking Hub, and your bank’s other local cash services. ATMs can be useful for withdrawals, but do not assume one accepts deposits. Before travelling, confirm that your bank and transaction are supported, then check opening hours, limits, fees, and when deposited cash will reach your account.
Choose an option based on what you need to do

Where to deposit cash
Try another Post Office branch
Post Office says customers of participating banks can use branches for routine counter banking. Banks choose which services they offer, and restrictions apply, so check that the branch supports your bank and the specific deposit you need. See the Post Office banking services information and confirm details with your bank or the branch before setting out.
Check a Banking Hub
Banking Hubs provide shared counter banking, including cash deposits, withdrawals, and balance checks. Post Office describes them as “shared spaces in the heart of communities where you can do your banking.” That general description is not a guarantee that every service is available at every hub. Check the current Banking Hub information and local listing before travelling.
Community bankers from selected banks visit hubs on certain days, and the schedule varies by location. If you need help from your own bank beyond a routine cash transaction, check whether its community banker will be there when you visit.

Confirm the deposit method and timing
Ask your bank whether you need a card, personalised paying-in slip, envelope, or another method. Post Office explains that a deposit made with a personalised paying-in slip may not arrive in your account until the slip is delivered to the bank. The timing and process depend on the account and deposit route, so ask your bank when funds will be credited. See Post Office’s guidance on everyday banking.
Where to withdraw cash
Check a nearby Post Office branch or Banking Hub for counter withdrawals, or find an ATM. For any option, confirm that your account is eligible, cash is available, and you are within any daily withdrawal limit. Check whether a machine charges a fee before using it; the presence of an ATM does not establish that it is free or accepts deposits.

The Financial Conduct Authority advises consumers to check local cash withdrawal and deposit services. Its access-to-cash information can help you understand local provision and changes, but confirm opening and service details with the provider.

Your bank may offer mobile banking, pop-up services, or other local support, but availability and the cash transactions supported vary. Contact the bank to ask where and when a service operates near you. Online or telephone banking may handle some account tasks, but it does not provide cash in hand or by itself create a way to deposit notes and coins.

Check local availability, not just national figures
National figures provide context, not proof that a service is open near you. The House of Commons Library reported that 26% of UK adults with a bank account had used face-to-face banking in a branch in the previous year in 2024, and that 225 Banking Hubs were operational as of March 2026. Neither figure establishes which service is available at your location today. Check the current provider listing and opening information before travelling. - Confirm that your bank and the specific cash transaction are supported at the location.
- Check opening hours and, for a Banking Hub, the community banker’s visiting day if you need one.
- Ask what you must bring or use to make a deposit.
- Check withdrawal or deposit limits, any fees, and when a deposit will be credited.
- If you cannot find a suitable local option, contact your bank and check its current service notices and the FCA’s access-to-cash guidance.
