On the Spectrum WiFi 6 router model documented in the SAX1V1R user guide, there is no WPS button to find. That guide states that WPS is not enabled on the router and tells you to add new devices manually, using the network name and password printed on the router’s label or the setup page at spectrum.net/wpssetup. Because Spectrum sells more than one WiFi 6 model, confirm your model number before you follow any button-location instructions.

Step 1: Confirm which model you have

Spectrum’s Spectrum equipment manuals index lists three WiFi 6 router models: SAX1V1R, SAX1V1K, and SAX1V1S. The model number is printed on the label on the back or bottom of the unit. Write it down before you go further, because the control layout can differ between models.

Model Listed in Spectrum’s manuals index Detailed user guide reviewed for this article WPS button location
SAX1V1R Yes Yes, the SAX1V1R user guide (reprinted by Manuals+, updated June 5, 2023) No WPS feature: the guide says WPS is not enabled on this router
SAX1V1K Yes No Not stated in the sources reviewed
SAX1V1S Yes No Not stated in the sources reviewed

If your router is a SAX1V1R

The SAX1V1R guide’s troubleshooting section addresses WPS directly. It says the feature is not enabled on this router, so there is no button to press and no physical control to locate. The same section tells you to configure a new device’s wireless settings in one of two ways: use the network name and password on the router label, or use Spectrum’s WPS setup page at spectrum.net/wpssetup.

Manual connection is the reliable route for this model. Spectrum’s self-installation guidance for its WiFi 6 router describes the same approach:

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  1. On the new device, open its list of available WiFi networks.
  2. Select the default network name printed on the router’s equipment label.
  3. Enter the default password from the same label on the back of the router.

If you have since changed the network name or password, use the values you set instead. The label values only apply to the factory defaults.

Why some guides mention a WPS button

The SAX1V1R guide is not fully consistent. Beyond its specific troubleshooting entry, a later generic FAQ says the router includes a built-in WPS button located near the Ethernet ports. That statement conflicts with the troubleshooting entry for this model, and the guide does not reconcile the two. Treat the generic FAQ wording as unreliable for the SAX1V1R. Do not use it to decide where to look on your unit.

  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Some Spectrum routers and other brands do include WPS buttons, which is likely why the FAQ text appears. The presence of a button on one device does not establish that it exists on yours.

What the My Spectrum App can and cannot do

Spectrum’s self-installation guidance says the My Spectrum App can change your WiFi network name and password and show or manage the devices connected to your network. Use the app for those tasks. The sources reviewed do not show that the app turns on WPS or provides a virtual WPS button, so do not expect it to add a device for you through a WPS-style pairing step.

If your model is a SAX1V1K or SAX1V1S

The sources reviewed confirm that these models are part of Spectrum’s WiFi 6 family, but they do not include a detailed user guide for either one. Whether either model has a WPS button, and where it sits, is not established by the evidence available. Check the manual for your exact model in Spectrum’s equipment manuals index, or contact Spectrum support, before you assume a button is present or absent.

In the meantime, the manual connection steps above are the same approach Spectrum documents for its WiFi 6 router setup, and they work regardless of whether a WPS control exists on your unit.

Checklist before you go looking for a button

  • Read the model number on the router’s label and confirm whether it is SAX1V1R, SAX1V1K, or SAX1V1S.
  • For a SAX1V1R, skip the search for a WPS button and connect devices manually.
  • Use the network name and password on the label unless you have changed them.
  • For any other model, consult that model’s manual or Spectrum support before relying on button-location advice.
