Wine installs Windows applications inside a Wine prefix—a directory that acts as the application’s Windows-like environment. With the default prefix, the usual locations are ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files and ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86). If the program is missing there, it may be using a custom prefix, a different installer destination, or another mapped drive.
The default Wine installation path
Unless you configure otherwise, Wine normally uses ~/.wine as its prefix. The prefix contains Wine’s virtual Windows environment, including its registry, drive mappings, and installed applications.
The virtual Windows C: drive is the prefix’s drive_c directory:
~/.wine/drive_c
Most installers then place applications in one of these directories:

| Typical Windows location | Linux path in the default prefix | Common use |
|---|---|---|
C:Program Files |
~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files |
Many 64-bit applications and some applications that do not separate by architecture |
C:Program Files (x86) |
~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86) |
Common location for 32-bit applications on a 64-bit Wine setup |
| Installer-selected folder | Varies within the active prefix or mapped drive | Programs whose installers use a custom destination |
These are conventional locations, not guarantees. An installer can choose another folder, and Wine can expose additional host directories as Windows drive letters.
How to find an application’s files
- Determine the prefix being used. Check the command, desktop launcher, script, or game-manager configuration that starts the application. Wine uses the
WINEPREFIXenvironment variable when one is set; otherwise it generally falls back to~/.wine. - Open the prefix’s C: drive. In a file manager, enable hidden files and browse to
~/.wine/drive_c, or substitute the custom prefix path for~/.wine. - Check both Program Files folders. Look in
Program FilesandProgram Files (x86), then open likely vendor or application directories. - Use the installer’s destination. If you remember changing the destination, follow that path inside the active prefix. A Windows path such as
C:AppsExamplecorresponds to<prefix>/drive_c/Apps/Example. - Search for the executable. Search the active prefix for the program’s
.exefile rather than searching the whole home directory first. Wine can launch an executable using either a DOS-style path or a Unix-style path.
Why the program is not in ~/.wine/drive_c
The application uses a custom prefix
A prefix is selected per launch context. For example, a command such as WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.wine-games" wine setup.exe installs into ~/.wine-games, not ~/.wine. Managed launchers may create and select their own prefixes, so inspect the launcher’s configuration or startup command.

The installer chose another directory
Some Windows installers use folders directly under drive_c, create a vendor-specific directory, or install to a drive other than C:. Review the destination shown during setup and inspect the prefix’s other mapped drives.
You are looking at the wrong architecture folder
A 32-bit application often appears under Program Files (x86), while another application may use Program Files. Check both; the folder name alone does not prove that the application failed to install.

The application is in a different mapped drive
Wine stores drive-letter mappings in the prefix’s dosdevices directory. A mapping can point a Windows drive to a host path, so a program installed on D: or another mapped drive will not necessarily appear under drive_c. Inspect the mappings for the prefix used by the application.
What a Wine prefix contains
A prefix is a host directory, not usually a separate Windows partition. Its drive_c directory represents the emulated Windows C: drive. The prefix also contains Wine’s registry and configuration files, while dosdevices records drive-letter mappings. This lets the same file be addressed with different syntax, such as a Windows path (C:Program FilesExampleExample.exe) or its corresponding Unix path inside the prefix.

Finding the active prefix from a launcher or command
- Look for
WINEPREFIX=...before thewinecommand in a shell script or launcher. - Inspect wrapper scripts and game managers that may set a prefix internally.
- When testing from a terminal, set the same prefix explicitly so you inspect the environment that actually launches the program.
- If no custom value is present, start with
~/.wine, then verify that the launcher is not supplying a separate environment.
Uninstalling and cleaning up safely
Deleting an application’s folder is not a complete uninstall. Wine stores application settings and registration data in the prefix’s registry, so manually removing files can leave configuration behind. Use the application’s own uninstaller when available, or open Wine’s uninstaller with wine uninstaller in the relevant prefix. If the program uses a custom prefix, run the uninstaller with that prefix selected.
