Laravel’s local disk stores files on the machine running the app; it does not make them persistent. If an ephemeral deployment replaces that machine or its filesystem, local uploads—and a SQLite database file stored there—can disappear. Put durable files in object storage or on a host-supported persistent volume, and keep application records in a separately configured durable database.

Where Laravel puts files by default

Laravel’s filesystem disks are configured in config/filesystems.php. The local driver writes to the app server’s filesystem; Laravel’s documented default root is storage/app/private. The public disk also uses local storage by default, under storage/app/public. Its public/storage symbolic link can make files reachable from the web, but neither that link nor a public URL changes where the bytes live or whether they survive replacement.

A custom disk root changes the directory Laravel writes to, not the lifecycle of the machine or filesystem that holds it. Laravel describes the local driver as interacting with files stored locally on the server running the application; that is a location description, not a durability guarantee. Laravel File Storage documentation.

Files, database records, and SQLite are different data

Uploaded files

Laravel’s upload methods can use the configured default disk or a disk selected by the application. For example, $request->file('photo')->store('photos', 's3') selects the s3 disk. The method returns a path or key that you can save in a database; the path is only a reference, while the file contents live on the selected storage service. Check write results: filesystem writes may return false unless the disk is configured to throw exceptions. Laravel File Storage documentation.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Relational records

Configure the application’s database connection separately through its environment and config/database.php. A database service with its own lifecycle is distinct from the app container. Do not assume that a database running inside a replaceable app instance will outlive that instance.

SQLite

Laravel configures SQLite through DB_DATABASE; the database is a single file on a filesystem. If that file sits on an ephemeral app filesystem, it can be lost when that filesystem is replaced. For it to persist, the file must be on storage the host explicitly preserves. Suitability also depends on concurrency and backup needs. Laravel database documentation.

Other operational data

Sessions, cache, queues, and logs have their own configured stores and lifecycles. Check the Laravel configuration and the hosting provider’s current documentation for each; the fact that uploads or database records persist does not establish that these other data classes do.

Choose storage based on what must survive

Option Useful when Verify before relying on it
S3-compatible object storage Files must be independent of app instances, or multiple instances need access to the same objects. Bucket permissions, endpoint and region, lifecycle and backup policy, URL handling, egress, and credentials.
Persistent volume The app needs a filesystem path and the host supports mounting persistent storage there. That it is mounted at the exact path Laravel writes to; whether workers and replicas can access it; and what happens during replacement, migration, backup, or region changes.
Durable managed database Application records must survive app redeploys and restarts. Provider lifecycle, backups, migrations, credentials, network access, and connection limits.

Object storage and a mounted volume solve related but different needs. Object storage keeps file objects separate from app instances; a volume provides a filesystem path whose sharing, scaling, and deployment behavior depends on the host. Neither choice removes the need to understand backups, restores, access control, and migration.

Why the hosting platform matters

“Ephemeral environment” does not say exactly what gets replaced, whether a volume is attached, or whether multiple instances share storage. Check the documentation for your platform and deployment mode rather than assuming every deploy, restart, or scale event behaves the same way.

Railway example

Railway documents mounting a volume at a selected service path, and its storage overview lists databases, persistent volumes, and S3-compatible buckets. Its current volume reference says a service can have one volume and that replicas cannot be used with volumes. Those are Railway-specific constraints, and platform limits can change; check the current Railway volumes reference and Railway data and storage documentation. Railway’s Laravel guide shows a separate database service in an example deployment architecture.

Fly.io example

Fly.io’s Laravel database guide points to database options including MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, and SQLite, whether run as Fly Apps or through managed solutions. Confirm current Fly.io instructions for any volume mount or persistence behavior in your chosen deployment; do not infer that a Laravel storage path persists merely because the application runs on Fly.io. Set up and verify persistence

  1. Inventory what must survive. List uploads and generated files, database rows, sessions, cached values, queues, and logs separately.
  2. Check the host lifecycle. Find what happens to the app filesystem on deploy, restart, replacement, scaling, and migration, and confirm whether persistent storage is attached.
  3. Choose the right disk. Set Laravel’s default disk or select a disk explicitly for each upload. Put credentials and endpoints in the platform’s secrets or environment configuration.
  4. Save file references. Store the disk-relative path or object key and relevant metadata in the database, rather than assuming a file remains in the current release directory.
  5. Configure the database independently. Use a durable database service for records. If choosing SQLite, place its file on storage the host explicitly preserves and check that concurrency and backup behavior meet your needs.
  6. Test replacement and recovery. Deploy a replacement instance, then verify that expected files and records remain accessible. Also check storage-write failure handling, access controls, backup and restore, and migration procedures before relying on the setup in production.
