Where Windows puts a screenshot depends on the shortcut or app you used. Some methods create an image file automatically; others copy the image to the clipboard and do not save anything to disk until you paste or save it.

The quickest place to check is File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. That is the normal destination for Windows + PrtScn and, in the current Snipping Tool, automatically saved image snips. Plain PrtScn, Alt + PrtScn, and usually Windows + Shift + S need a little more explanation.

Where Windows screenshots are normally saved

Open File Explorer, select Pictures in the navigation pane, and open Screenshots. The folder is normally shown as:

PicturesScreenshots

Do not assume that this always means C:Users<your-name>PicturesScreenshots. Windows user folders can be redirected to another drive or location. The reliable Microsoft interface path is File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots.

Windows + PrtScn: saves directly to Screenshots

Press Windows logo key + PrtScn to capture the entire screen and save it as an image. Windows places the file in:

File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots

The screen may briefly dim when the capture is taken. You do not need to open Paint or another app first. This shortcut saves the file automatically on both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Some keyboards label the key PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn. On hardware without a dedicated Print Screen key, Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative screenshot shortcut. See Microsoft’s Print Screen keyboard-shortcut documentation for the supported combinations.

Where Snipping Tool captures go

The current Snipping Tool can automatically save image snips to the Screenshots folder. This includes captures made after opening the overlay with Windows + Shift + S, provided automatic saving is enabled.

To take a snip:

  1. Press Windows + Shift + S.
  2. Choose a capture type: Rectangle, Freeform, Window, or Full screen.
  3. For Rectangle or Freeform, click and drag over the area you want. Window and Full screen captures are taken immediately.
  4. Select the notification that appears if you want to open the image in the Snipping Tool editor.

In the editor, you can use tools such as Pen, Highlighter, Shapes, Eraser, Image crop, and Text actions. Use Save as or press Ctrl + S to choose a filename and location yourself.

Change Snipping Tool’s automatic-save settings

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Snipping Tool, then open the app.
  3. Select See More (…) in the toolbar.
  4. Choose Settings.
  5. Change the automatic-save behavior or the default Screenshots folder, if those options are available in your version.

If a snip is not appearing in Pictures > Screenshots, check these settings first. It may have been copied to the clipboard without being saved, or the default folder may have been changed.

What Windows + Shift + S actually does

Windows + Shift + S opens the Snipping Tool capture overlay. Microsoft documents the immediate result as a screenshot copied to the clipboard, followed by a notification. Selecting the notification opens the capture in the Snipping Tool editor.

That means this shortcut should not be described simply as “save to PicturesScreenshots.” Depending on the Snipping Tool version and its automatic-save setting, an image file may also be created, but the guaranteed workflow is a clipboard capture that can be opened, edited, pasted, or saved.

To save it manually, select the notification, then choose Save as. Pick the folder, enter a filename, select an image format if offered, and click Save.

Shortcuts that copy screenshots instead of saving files

Shortcut Capture Initial destination How to create a file
Windows + PrtScn Entire screen Pictures > Screenshots Already saved automatically
Windows + Shift + S Selected area, window, or screen Clipboard; current Snipping Tool may also auto-save Open the notification and select Save as
PrtScn Entire screen Clipboard Paste into Paint, Word, an image editor, or another app, then save
Alt + PrtScn Active window only Clipboard Paste into an app and save

Plain Print Screen: where is the image?

Pressing PrtScn captures the entire screen and copies it to the clipboard. It does not, by itself, select a disk folder or create a screenshot file.

To turn it into a file:

  1. Press PrtScn.
  2. Open Paint by pressing the Windows key, typing Paint, and selecting the app.
  3. Press Ctrl + V to paste the screenshot.
  4. Select File > Save as, choose a folder and image format, enter a name, and save it.

You can use the same paste-and-save process in another application that accepts bitmap images.

Alt + Print Screen: active-window captures

Alt + PrtScn captures only the currently active window and copies it to the clipboard. It does not save directly to Pictures > Screenshots.

Find a screenshot in clipboard history

Windows can show more than the most recent clipboard item. Press Windows + V to open clipboard history. The first time you use it, select Turn on.

Clipboard history can contain screenshots copied with PrtScn, Alt + PrtScn, or Windows + Shift + S. Select an entry to paste it into the active application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clipboard history is not permanent file storage:

  • It supports up to 25 copied entries.
  • Older unpinned entries are removed as new entries are added.
  • History is cleared when the PC restarts, except for pinned items.
  • The documented maximum size is 4 MB per item.
  • Supported formats include text, HTML, and bitmap data.

Manage the feature at Start > Settings > System > Clipboard. If a screenshot matters, paste it into an app and save an image file before restarting or clearing the clipboard.

Why a screenshot is missing from the Screenshots folder

You used the wrong shortcut

Plain PrtScn and Alt + PrtScn copy images rather than saving them. Check Paint or clipboard history instead of looking only in Pictures.

Snipping Tool automatic saving is disabled

Open Snipping Tool > See More (…) > Settings and review the automatic-save option. You can also open the capture from the notification and use Save as.

The Screenshots folder was moved

User folders can be redirected, so the folder may not be physically located under the usual Windows user profile. Navigate through File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots rather than relying on a hard-coded path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The capture was not completed

With Windows + Shift + S, rectangular and free-form snips are not taken until you click and drag. If you release too early or cancel the overlay, there may be no usable image to save.

Do video snips use the same folder?

No. Windows + Shift + R opens Snipping Tool’s video-capture overlay rather than the image-snipping overlay. In the interface, select Record > New, select an area, choose Start, and then Stop when finished.

A video snip can be saved as-is or opened with Edit in Clipchamp. Treat video captures separately from the image files in Pictures > Screenshots.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 differences

The core locations and shortcuts above apply to both Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Snipping Tool labels can vary. Current versions use labels such as Snipping Mode, Rectangle, Window, Full screen, Freeform, and New. Older interfaces may instead show Mode, Save Snip, or Options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some current Snipping Tool features, including Perfect Screenshot and Color picker, are documented by Microsoft as available only on Windows 11 AI+ or Copilot+ PCs. They do not change the basic distinction between a clipboard capture and a saved image file.

The Bottom Line

Use Windows + PrtScn when you want a full-screen image saved automatically: look in File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. Use Windows + Shift + S for a selected region, window, or full screen, then open the notification and select Save as if you need a file in a specific location. Plain PrtScn and Alt + PrtScn only copy screenshots to the clipboard until you paste and save them.
