The Dongsha Islands, also known as the Pratas Islands, are in the northern South China Sea, about 240 nautical miles southwest of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Their position south of the Taiwan Strait and near regional maritime approaches gives Dongsha geographic significance—but the available official sources do not show that the islands control or can close those routes.

Where are the Dongsha Islands?

Dongsha Atoll lies in the northern South China Sea, between Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Luzon. Taiwan’s Marine National Park Headquarters places it at approximately 20°35–47′ N and 116°42–55′ E. The Taiwan National Park Service describes it as roughly 240 nautical miles southwest of Kaohsiung.

The atoll is also about 230 nautical miles from Penghu, 140 nautical miles from Shantou, 170 nautical miles from Hong Kong, and 360 nautical miles from Hainan Island, according to the park headquarters’ location information. These are distances listed by that authority; the page does not state when they were measured. Marine National Park Headquarters: Dongsha Atoll; Taiwan National Park Service: Dongsha Atoll.

What is the difference between Dongsha Island and Dongsha Atoll?

Dongsha Atoll is the larger coral reef and lagoon system. Dongsha Island is the exposed land on the atoll’s western side and its only portion that remains above sea level year-round. “Dongsha Islands” and “Pratas Islands” are broader common names for the area.

Why is Dongsha strategically important?

Dongsha sits south of the Taiwan Strait and near maritime approaches connecting the surrounding region toward the Bashi Channel to the east and Hainan, Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau to the west. Taiwan’s National Park Service also describes it as lying on a major maritime trade route. That location helps explain why the atoll features in regional maritime and security discussions.

Geographic significance should not be confused with proven operational control. The official sources establish Dongsha’s position relative to routes and neighboring places, but do not establish that it can control or block shipping, or specify a current military role, force level, or readiness. Taiwan’s park authority says the Coast Guard Administration is responsible for homeland defense and sea patrol in the area; that description does not by itself demonstrate a broader military capability. Marine National Park Headquarters: Dongsha Atoll; Taiwan National Park Service: Dongsha Atoll.

Who administers and manages the atoll?

Taiwan places Dongsha’s administrative affairs under Kaohsiung. Its Coast Guard Administration handles homeland defense and sea patrol, while the Marine National Park Headquarters manages conservation and sustainable use. These are distinct responsibilities: patrol and defense on one hand, protected-area management on the other. Marine National Park Headquarters: Dongsha Atoll; Marine National Park Headquarters: Dongsha Atoll Conservation.

Why is Dongsha important for conservation?

Taiwan established Dongsha Atoll National Park on January 17, 2007, making it the country’s first marine national park. The protected area covers 353,668 hectares and is centered on the atoll with a 12-nautical-mile radius. The park authority identifies coral reefs, seagrass, and the island’s coral-sand formation as key conservation features.

The authority describes Dongsha as a stepping-stone for marine-organism dispersal in the South China Sea. Its page reports 690 fish species recorded in Dongsha waters, more than 1,200 hectares of seagrass beds around Dongsha Island, and seven seagrass species. The page does not state the survey years behind those figures, so they should be read as reported park-authority statistics, not as newly measured 2026 totals. What does Dongsha’s maritime history tell us?

Reefs, shoals, and stormy conditions have made the surrounding waters hazardous to shipping. A Taiwan National Park Service account reports at least 28 shipwrecks near Dongsha Island, attributing the figure to Hsiang-chien Wu. The account does not provide a date or details of a current wreck inventory, so the number is best understood as an attributed historical report rather than a verified up-to-date count.
