Screenshot pictures are saved in different places depending on the device and capture method. Check Pictures > Screenshots on Windows, the Desktop on Mac, Downloads on Chromebook, and the Screenshots album or folder in Photos/Gallery on Android and iPhone. If you still cannot find the image, it may have been copied to the clipboard, shown only as a preview, or saved to a destination that was changed in the capture tool.

These are defaults, not universal rules. A shortcut may copy an image without creating a file, an app may ask you to choose a folder, and operating-system updates or manufacturer customizations can alter the path.
Windows 10 and 11
Snipping Tool
Press Windows + Shift + S to open the snipping overlay and select a region, window, or full screen. Microsoft says a captured snip is automatically saved to the Screenshots folder. In File Explorer, start at Pictures > Screenshots. Open the Snipping Tool, select its Settings button, and review the automatic-saving option and default folder if your files are going somewhere else.
The notification thumbnail is useful for editing or sharing, but it is not proof that the file was saved where you expect. Open it and use Save as to select an explicit location when necessary.

Print Screen
The behavior of the Print Screen key depends on Windows settings and the keyboard. The standard help route is File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots when Windows is configured to save screen captures automatically. In other configurations, Print Screen copies the entire screen to the clipboard. Paste it into Paint, an email, or another image editor, then save the resulting file.
When a Windows screenshot is missing
- Look in Pictures > Screenshots and sort by Date modified.
- Open Snipping Tool Settings and verify automatic saving and the destination folder.
- Press Ctrl+V in Paint or another editor to test whether the image is only on the clipboard.
- Check the notification thumbnail and use Save as rather than assuming it created a permanent file.
- If Pictures is redirected to OneDrive or another synced location, search that Pictures folder and Windows Search for recent PNG files.
Mac
Default desktop location
macOS normally saves screenshots to the Desktop with names such as Screen Shot [date] at [time]. This applies to the built-in Screenshot app described for macOS Mojave 10.14 and later. Look for the newest file on the Desktop, or use Finder search for “Screen Shot.”
Choose another folder
Press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot, select Options, and choose a destination such as Desktop, Documents, or another folder. The selected destination remains in effect for later captures until you change it.
Clipboard and floating thumbnail behavior
Holding Control with a screenshot shortcut copies the capture to the clipboard instead of saving a file. Paste it into an app and save it yourself. A floating thumbnail can also be dragged directly into a Finder folder, document, or message. If you clicked the thumbnail and edited the image, use its save command to create a file.
Chromebook
Find the file
Chromebook screenshots and recordings are saved to Downloads by default. Open the Files app, select Downloads, and sort by Modified to see the newest capture.

Change the destination
Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows to open Screen Capture. Open its Settings, choose Select folder, and pick a folder in the Files app. Future captures will use that selection.
Clipboard versus saved capture
Some ChromeOS capture workflows offer a copy option or show a preview before saving. If no new file appears in Downloads, paste into an image-capable app or document. Also check the folder currently selected in Screen Capture settings rather than relying on the default.
Android phones and tablets
Google Photos route
Open Google Photos, tap Collections, choose On this device, and open Screenshots. This view groups screenshots even when you do not know the underlying storage path.

Gallery route
On phones without Google Photos, open the manufacturer’s Gallery or Photos app and look for a Screenshots album or folder. Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, Xiaomi, and other brands can place controls and albums differently. If the generic steps do not match your phone, use the device manufacturer’s support instructions for its Android edition.
Capture and storage differences
Button combinations vary by manufacturer. Android 12 and later support scrolling screenshots on most screens that allow scrolling; the resulting image may be taller than a normal screen capture and can appear in the same Screenshots collection. Cloud backup settings can also determine whether the image appears on another device or only in local storage.

iPhone and iPad
Find screenshots in Photos
iOS automatically saves screenshots to the photo library. Open Photos, go to Collections, scroll to Media Types, and tap Screenshots. You can also find the image in the main library by capture date.
Why it may not appear immediately
A screenshot may still be open in the thumbnail editor, may have been deleted, or may be hidden by a filter or shared-library view. Check Recently Deleted if it was removed, and allow Photos time to finish syncing if iCloud Photos is enabled. A screenshot taken while another app is displaying a restricted or blank view can also produce an image that looks empty even though it was saved.

When screenshots are not where the default says
It was copied, not saved
Clipboard captures have no filename or folder until you paste and save them. On Windows, try Ctrl+V; on Mac, try Command+V; on ChromeOS, paste into an editor or document. Clipboard contents can be replaced by the next copy operation, so save the image promptly.
The tool asked you to choose a location
Some capture modes open a Save dialog or use the last folder you selected. Search recent files by creation time and image type (PNG, JPEG, or WebP), then inspect the capture app’s Options or Settings.
A cloud or removable location is involved
Pictures, Desktop, and Downloads may be redirected to OneDrive, iCloud Drive, Google Drive, an SD card, or an external disk. Confirm that the storage is connected and search both the local and synced versions of the folder.

The screenshot was edited or exported
Markup tools often save an edited copy in a new location while leaving the original elsewhere. Check the editor’s export history, recent files, and Save As dialog rather than searching only for the original default filename.

- Capture a new test image and note the exact time.
- Open the platform’s default location from the table above.
- Sort by date modified and identify the newest image.
- If nothing appears, paste from the clipboard into an editor and save it explicitly.
- Open the capture tool’s Settings or Options and record its selected destination.
- Search the device for files created at the test time, including PNG, JPEG, and WebP images.
- Check cloud folders, Recently Deleted, and the manufacturer’s Gallery album if applicable.
