There is no single date for New Horizons to “leave the Solar System,” because the phrase can mean crossing several very different boundaries. NASA’s planned Kuiper Belt exit is one milestone; reaching interstellar space is a later one. The spacecraft may keep returning science from far beyond the heliopause, but its eventual operating lifetime is a projection, not a scheduled end date.

What does “leave the Solar System” mean?

The Kuiper Belt, the heliosphere and the Solar System’s distant gravitational outskirts are not the same boundary. A date for one cannot be used as the date for all of them.

Boundary or milestone What it means New Horizons timing How to interpret it
Kuiper Belt exit The spacecraft leaves the region of small icy bodies that extends roughly from 30 to 50 AU from the Sun. NASA expects this in 2028–2029, according to its current extended-mission plan. This is not the same as reaching interstellar space.
Termination shock The outward-flowing solar wind is strongly slowed as it encounters the surrounding interstellar environment. A 2026 peer-reviewed study in Advances in Space Research puts a possible encounter between 2029 and 2040. This is a model-dependent window, not a fixed prediction. The study’s range reflects competing heliosphere models and uncertainty about future solar-wind activity.
Heliopause The outer plasma boundary where the solar wind is stopped by the interstellar medium. No authoritative source cited here gives a guaranteed crossing year for New Horizons. The heliopause lies beyond the termination shock, so a shock encounter would not itself mean the spacecraft had crossed into interstellar space.
Oort Cloud or distant gravitational edge A much farther-out region associated with the Sun’s gravitational influence, not the boundary of the solar wind. No calendar date is established in the mission sources cited here. Neither the planned Kuiper Belt exit nor the modeled termination-shock window is an Oort Cloud exit date.

AU means astronomical unit, the average distance between Earth and the Sun. The practical answer depends on which boundary you mean: the Kuiper Belt exit is a mission-plan milestone, while the farther boundaries involve physical models and much greater uncertainty.

How did New Horizons get this far?

Date Mission milestone
January 19, 2006 New Horizons launched, according to NASA’s mission record. A separate NASA mission-plan article describes the launch as January 18, 2006.
February 2007 A Jupiter gravity assist increased the spacecraft’s speed by about 9,000 miles per hour (14,000 km/h), according to NASA.
July 14, 2015 It became the first spacecraft to explore Pluto up close.
January 1, 2019 It made the first close exploration of a second Kuiper Belt object, Arrokoth.
October 1, 2024 NASA reported that New Horizons had reached 60 times Earth’s distance from the Sun.

From 2025 onward, NASA’s plan emphasized heliophysics observations, fuel conservation and reduced operational complexity while the team sought a future close-flyby target. In a 2026 update, NASA said all weekly status beacons during the spacecraft’s long hibernation had been green. The update also described autonomy software designed to handle greater distances, declining power and longer radio-signal travel times.

History Galore 4"x6" Poster, New Horizons spacecraft model 1 - Gallery Print
  • MUSEUM QUALITY: Printed on museum-quality photo paper: Our product is printed on satin-finish photo paper that is typically used in museums and art galleries to display high-quality prints. This paper has a smooth surface and a high color gamut, which means that it is capable of producing vivid and accurate colors. It is also thicker than standard poster paper, which gives it a more substantial and durable feel.
  • THICKER PAPER: 4x thicker than typical store-bought poster (0.22mm vs 0.05mm), 235 g/m2: Our posters are printed on paper that is 4 times thicker than the paper typically used for store-bought posters. While most posters are printed on paper that is 0.05mm thick, our product is printed on paper that is 0.22mm thick (235 g/m2). This increased thickness gives our posters a more substantial and high-quality feel, and makes them more resistant to tearing or damage.
  • SUPERIOR INK: Produced using archival-grade ink rated for 80+ year fade resistance: We use a special type of ink in our printing process that is rated for fade resistance of 80 years or more. This means that our posters will maintain their color and vibrancy for many decades, even if they are exposed to sunlight or other environmental factors that can cause fading. Our archival-grade ink is also acid-free, which further helps to preserve the quality of our prints.
  • SHIPS WELL PROTECTED: Shipped in mailing tube to prevent bending: To ensure that our posters arrive in pristine condition, we ship them in a sturdy mailing tube that prevents bending or creasing during transit. This tube is made from thick, durable cardboard and is designed to protect the poster from damage during shipping. When the poster arrives, it can be easily removed from the tube and displayed immediately.
  • READY FOR FRAMING: Suitable for framing: Our posters are sized to fit standard frames, making it easy to display them in your home or office. The dimensions of our posters are carefully chosen to fit a variety of frame sizes and styles, so you can find the perfect frame to complement your decor. Whether you choose to hang your poster on its own or in a gallery wall display, it is sure to be a stunning focal point.

How long can New Horizons keep operating?

The strongest published longevity estimate cited here comes from an engineering assessment by Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). Based on subsystem trends, APL said the projections support the mission’s potential to continue exploration beyond the heliopause until about 2050. That is a projection of potential scientific operations, not a promised shutdown date or a guarantee that every instrument will work until then.

NASA’s 2026 health update confirms that the spacecraft was operating after hibernation; it does not set a final operating date. Continued science depends on the spacecraft’s condition and on whether NASA chooses and is able to continue operating the mission.

What limits the spacecraft’s lifetime?

Gradually declining electrical power

New Horizons gets power from a radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG), not a battery that suddenly expires. NASA’s mission reference gives about 250 watts at launch and about 200 watts at the Pluto encounter. Those are historical output figures, not a statement of the spacecraft’s current power.

The RTG uses plutonium-238, which has an 88-year half-life, according to NASA’s 2023 radioisotope power systems FAQ. NASA explains that this produces a small, gradual decline in power that can be predicted and managed over the length of a typical space mission. The half-life does not mean the spacecraft will stop working after 88 years: usable power, spacecraft loads and the health of other systems all matter.

Propellant, thermal control and aging hardware

Finite propellant, aging electronics and thermal constraints also shape what the spacecraft can do. NASA’s lower-complexity heliophysics plan and fuel conservation are ways to manage mission resources; neither guarantees a particular operating lifetime.

Communications and mission operations

As New Horizons travels farther away, radio signals take longer to reach Earth, and the spacecraft has less power available. Its 2026 autonomy-software update is intended to help with those conditions, but communications capability and the resources available to operate the mission remain part of the practical limit.

Can New Horizons be expected to outlive Voyager?

The available mission information does not establish a reliable head-to-head lifetime comparison with the Voyager spacecraft. APL’s estimate concerns New Horizons’ potential operations, while a fair comparison would also require a comparable current prognosis for Voyager. The evidence here therefore supports a possible New Horizons mission extending to about 2050, but not a claim that it will outlive Voyager.
