Use Angular’s httpResource for reads whose parameters follow signals and whose UI needs reactive loading, error, and value state. Choose HttpClient when you need explicit subscription timing, Observable composition, mutations, or detailed response and event control. Keep generated API services when a specification-generated contract is important. These options can coexist: select the one that best fits each operation, not the entire application.

How the three options differ

httpResource: HTTP state as signals

Angular describes httpResource as “a reactive wrapper around HttpClient that gives you the request status and response as signals.” Its request computation can read signals; when a dependency changes, Angular starts a replacement request and cancels an outstanding pending request. Unlike an HttpClient Observable, it is eager: the request starts when the resource’s reactive computation runs, not when a consumer subscribes. Angular’s reactive data-fetching guide explains this behavior.

The default resource form expects JSON. Angular also documents constructors for text, blob, and array-buffer responses, and a parse option for runtime parsing or validation. The API reference marks httpResource stable since Angular v22.0. If your project uses an earlier or mixed Angular version, check the documentation for the version actually installed rather than assuming the current stability status applies.

HttpClient: explicit Observable-based requests

HttpClient methods return Observables and support request verbs, response bodies, full responses, and event streams. The Observable starts its work on subscription, giving the caller or service control over when the request runs and how it fits into an Observable pipeline. The Angular request guide covers request and response configuration, while the API reference describes the available methods.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Generated API services: operations from a specification

A generated client is a good fit when an API specification is the contract your team wants to keep authoritative for endpoint operations and models. The OpenAPI Generator TypeScript Angular documentation describes configurable generated services and models. It does not establish that every generator emits httpResource-based APIs. Treat generated code as transport and contract output: a handwritten facade can expose application-specific methods or adapt suitable reads without editing files that generation may recreate.

Choose based on the request’s lifecycle and behavior

Decision point Prefer httpResource when… Prefer HttpClient or a generated service when…
What triggers work? Inputs are signals and the request should update as their values change. A caller needs to decide explicitly when work starts, such as by subscribing to an Observable.
What kind of operation is it? It is a read whose earlier pending request can be superseded when inputs change. It is a mutation or a command that needs deliberate sequencing and control.
What state does the UI use? The view benefits from request status and response as signals. Existing Observable pipelines or HTTP event streams are central to the flow.
Where does the contract live? The request is small, hand-shaped, or maps cleanly to a resource. Generated operations and models need to remain aligned with an API specification.
What response behavior is needed? The result is JSON, text, a blob, or an array buffer, with parsing where appropriate. The operation requires broader response modes or custom event handling.
Where should shared behavior live? A resource’s owning scope naturally matches the data’s lifecycle. Reusable API configuration, shared data access, or generated transport code merits an injectable service or facade.
Which Angular version? The project uses v22.0 or later and the installed-version documentation confirms support. The project is older or spans versions where support needs to be verified.

These are behavior and architecture choices, not performance claims: the cited Angular and OpenAPI Generator documentation does not establish that httpResource is faster or universally replaces services.

Use httpResource for replaceable, signal-driven reads

A changing search term, selected record, or other signal-backed query is a natural resource input when the latest value should determine the displayed result. A signal change can cancel a pending request and start another. That is useful when an older read is no longer relevant, but it is not a safe general strategy for commands that must all complete.

Account for eagerness when choosing where to create a resource. A resource in a long-lived or root-scoped object may start requests earlier or more often than a caller-triggered service method. Put it in a scope that matches the data lifecycle and the conditions under which the request should run.

Keep HttpClient for commands and explicit control

Prefer direct HttpClient or an existing service method when subscription timing matters, when the flow depends on Observable composition, or when you need full-response or event-stream handling. Mutations also usually belong in deliberately invoked command flows rather than in a reactive read that automatically reruns as its dependencies change.

Using httpResource does not mean giving up HttpClient: Angular documents it as built on HttpClient, retaining features such as interceptors and the same testing APIs. For data access that multiple parts of an application share, a service can still own configuration and encapsulate the request logic. Angular recommends reusable injectable services for isolating data access in its request guide.

Keep generated clients behind a useful application boundary

When your API specification is the source of truth, generated endpoint methods and models help avoid manually duplicating that contract. You do not have to expose generated transport details directly to components: a handwritten service or facade can provide application-friendly methods, centralize shared behavior, and adapt a read to resource-shaped state where that fits.

Keep generated output generated. Put application-specific mapping or policy in a wrapper or adapter rather than hand-editing generated files. Whether to expose a resource from that boundary depends on the read’s lifecycle and state needs, not on an assumption that the generator itself produces resource APIs.

A practical selection checklist

  • Use httpResource when a read follows signal inputs, should refresh as they change, and the UI benefits from resource signals.
  • Use HttpClient when explicit subscription timing, Observable composition, mutations, or response and event control are central.
  • Use generated services when the API specification should drive endpoint and model contracts; add a facade when it improves reuse or separates application code from generated transport details.
  • Check the installed Angular version before adopting httpResource, especially in older or mixed-version projects.
  • Choose the resource’s scope deliberately, and use cancellation for replaceable reads rather than as a shortcut for mutation handling.
