Leave promptly when local officials issue an evacuation order. Do not wait for an order if officials advise you to leave or you feel unsafe. Alert terms vary by location, so follow the instructions from your local emergency-management and fire agencies—not a generic label or a route you planned before the fire.

When should you leave?

When authorities tell you to evacuate, go promptly. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) also advises leaving immediately if you feel unsafe rather than waiting for an order. Late departure can mean heavier traffic and worsening visibility from smoke, embers, or debris. During an active incident, current local evacuation boundaries, route directions, and destination instructions take precedence over general advice or your preplanned route. USFA wildfire evacuation guidance and USFA advice for a wildland-urban interface fire explain these recommendations.

What do evacuation alerts mean?

Alert labels are not a universal national standard. For example, CAL FIRE uses these terms on its California map:

CAL FIRE status Meaning and action
Evacuation Order Immediate threat to life; law enforcement instructs people to leave immediately.
Evacuation Warning Potential threat to life or property. CAL FIRE says people who need extra time and those with pets or livestock should leave immediately.
Evacuation Advisory Precautionary notice to prepare, gather essentials, and stay informed in case an order follows.

These definitions are specific to CAL FIRE’s California map; another jurisdiction may use different labels or instructions. Check the CAL FIRE map legend and confirm what your own local authorities mean.

A National Weather Service fire-weather watch or red-flag message warns of critical fire-weather conditions; it is not itself a local evacuation order. Use local emergency-management and fire-agency channels for evacuation status and directions. The National Weather Service says to follow local officials and leave immediately if ordered (NWS wildfire awareness).

How to stay informed during a fire

  • Before fire season, enroll in your community’s emergency alerts on the phones and other devices you rely on.
  • Know where local officials post evacuation notices, route changes, and shelter or destination instructions.
  • During an incident, keep monitoring local government, emergency-management, and fire-agency updates. Conditions can change with weather, terrain, and vegetation, so an earlier status or route may no longer be valid.
  • Keep phones charged in case power fails, and follow official directions as you depart.

How to plan an evacuation route

Before there is a fire

  1. Find your community’s evacuation plan and identify a place to go.
  2. Choose a primary route and an alternate route away from the hazard. Practice both where feasible, and make sure household members know the routes and meeting place.
  3. Account for workplaces, schools, regular commutes, mobility or access needs, gated exits, and the time needed to help children, pets, or other animals.
  4. Consider whether roads and exits will be usable for your household and accessible to responders.

When officials tell you to leave

Use the route and destination local authorities specify. A route you planned in advance is a preparation backup, not a reason to drive toward a closed, threatened, or operational area. Keep checking official updates while departing safely. Avoid driving a large vehicle or trailer if you are unfamiliar with it; a stalled vehicle can impede other residents and responders. USFA covers planning and departure in its wildfire evacuation guidance and wildfire evacuation checklist.

What to put in a wildfire go-bag

Prepare an emergency bag in advance, keep it accessible, and put it in the vehicle when appropriate. Tailor it to the people and animals in your household; a commercial bag can be a container or starting point, but inspect it and fill any gaps. No particular kit or brand is necessary to decide when to evacuate. Do not delay leaving to finish packing.

What to wear when evacuating

For an immediate evacuation, CAL FIRE recommends long pants, long sleeves, sturdy shoes or boots, a cap, a dry bandanna for face covering, and goggles or glasses; it says 100% cotton is preferable. Prioritize leaving and following official directions over collecting extra gear. See CAL FIRE’s Get Ready to Go guidance.

After you evacuate

Wait for official guidance before returning home. Do not treat an earlier all-clear, familiar route, or change in visible conditions as permission to return; follow the current direction from local authorities.
