Use Queueable Apex for discrete work that should run asynchronously and benefits from a trackable job ID, richer input data, or a sequential chain. Choose Batch Apex when a very large record population needs chunked processing; consider Continuations when a Lightning interaction must stay responsive during a long-running callout. Queueable work is deferred until Salesforce has capacity, not guaranteed to start immediately.
When should I use Queueable Apex?
Queueable Apex moves work out of the initiating transaction so the caller does not have to wait for the result. Salesforce identifies long-running database operations and external web service callouts as suitable asynchronous work. It is a good fit when the task is discrete, can tolerate deferred execution, and benefits from one or more of these capabilities:
- Trackability:
System.enqueueJob()returns an ID for anAsyncApexJobrecord, which you can query or inspect in Apex Jobs. - Richer inputs: A Queueable can receive non-primitive constructor values such as sObjects and custom Apex types. This can be more convenient than a future method’s primitive-argument restriction.
- Sequential stages: A running Queueable can enqueue a successor, allowing one step to follow another.
- Background execution: The initiating code can continue without waiting for the asynchronous work to finish.
Input objects represent the state captured when the job is enqueued; they are not automatically a guarantee that the same business facts remain current when the job runs. Decide whether the job should use its captured data or re-query records at execution time.
Queueable vs. Batch Apex
The central question is whether the work is a discrete task or a large population that should be divided into manageable chunks. Salesforce’s architecture guidance identifies Batch Apex for large-volume, chunked processing.

| Need | Queueable Apex | Batch Apex |
|---|---|---|
| Typical shape of work | A discrete asynchronous task, or a serial sequence of tasks. | A very large set of records that should be processed in chunks. |
| Sequential stages | A running job can enqueue one successor. | Use when processing a large population in batches is the main need. |
| Best starting point | Choose when a job ID, richer input state, or a short serial chain is useful. | Choose when volume and chunking drive the design, especially for millions of records. |
Queueable is not a substitute for every bulk workload. If independent work must branch across many tasks, do not try to turn a one-child chain into an unbounded dispatcher; select an architecture that explicitly handles fan-out, volume, and shared limits.
Queueable Apex vs. future method
For new asynchronous Apex, Queueable is usually the better starting point. Salesforce’s Apex Developer Guide states: “Salesforce recommends that you use Queueable Apex instead of Apex future methods.” Queueable adds a job ID, accepts richer constructor inputs, and supports chaining. Future methods may still suit a simple method that needs only to run out of band and does not need those capabilities, particularly in a legacy or dual synchronous/asynchronous design. The recommendation alone is not a reason to refactor every existing future method.

Can Queueable Apex make callouts?
Yes. Queueable Apex can perform external web service callouts, making it suitable when the initiating transaction should not wait on a remote service. If the callout is part of an interactive Lightning experience where the user needs a responsive interface while a long request runs, compare Apex Continuations instead. Salesforce says one Continuation can contain up to three callouts and can support parallel callouts. Its initial method cannot perform DML; DML can be performed in the callback.
Can I enqueue Queueable Apex from a trigger?
Yes, but trigger-originated enqueueing needs bulk and execution-context safeguards. Salesforce Trailhead documents a limit of up to 50 Queueable jobs enqueued with System.enqueueJob in one synchronous transaction. That figure is not a per-record allowance: avoid enqueuing a separate job for every record processed by a bulk trigger.

- Collect the work for the transaction and enqueue only the jobs the design actually needs.
- Check available enqueue capacity and account for whether the caller is already running asynchronously; asynchronous, batch, and trigger contexts can have stricter constraints.
- Evaluate scheduled or asynchronous Flow, platform events, or Change Data Capture when the process is better expressed as declarative or event-driven automation.
- Do not treat direct trigger enqueueing as the default for high-volume automation; Salesforce Architects warns that it can be risky.
What limits and failure modes should I plan for?
Per-transaction enqueue limits
Per-transaction limits are distinct from the org’s daily asynchronous allocation, and the applicable constraints depend on execution context. A synchronous transaction can enqueue up to 50 Queueable jobs according to Trailhead; asynchronous callers have stricter constraints. Check the current Apex limits references and your org’s limits before deployment.
Shared daily asynchronous capacity
Queueable does not have a separate daily pool. Salesforce groups Queueable, Batch, future, and Scheduled Apex under the shared DailyAsyncApexExecutions limit. Salesforce Help describes a typical org allocation of 250,000 executions per 24 hours or a license-based calculation, whichever is greater; this is org-dependent, not a universal Queueable allowance. Inspect live org usage and limits rather than hard-coding that typical figure.

Deferred execution and ordering
Salesforce schedules asynchronous work as system resources become available. Enqueueing is not a promise of immediate execution, and queue order and timing depend on platform resources. Business processes must tolerate delay rather than rely on a particular start time.
Transaction rollback
If the transaction that enqueues a Queueable rolls back, Salesforce says the queued job is not processed. Do not assume that a job survives failure of the transaction that submitted it.

Failure, retries, and recovery
Track job state and errors, make processing idempotent where possible, and define retry or reconciliation behavior when the business requirement calls for it. Salesforce reliability guidance recommends explicit handling of transient failures. A one-successor chain is suited to serial steps, not unlimited parallel fan-out.

Keep the ID returned by System.enqueueJob(). It corresponds to an AsyncApexJob record that can be queried or inspected through Apex Jobs, giving you a way to review the job rather than treating enqueueing as proof of completion. Monitoring should be paired with a recovery plan for failed work and an approach for reconciling business records if asynchronous processing is delayed or interrupted.
How to choose the right pattern
- Choose Queueable for discrete background work needing a trackable ID, richer inputs, or a serial sequence.
- Choose Batch Apex when very large record populations need chunked processing.
- Compare Continuations when a Lightning UI must remain responsive around long-running callouts.
- Assess Flow, platform events, and Change Data Capture when declarative or event-driven automation may better fit the process.
- Consider a future method for a simple legacy or dual-mode case that does not need Queueable’s additional capabilities; do not refactor solely for novelty.
Before committing to a design, compare the amount of data and need for chunking, serial versus independent work, whether the caller needs an interactive result, input freshness, monitoring and recovery needs, execution context, and available shared asynchronous capacity.
