There is no evidence-based universal number of days for keeping a published claim provisional. Keep its wording qualified while material evidence, source reliability, or interpretation remains unresolved. Revisit it when credible new evidence or a substantive challenge appears, and correct known factual errors promptly and transparently.
Why a fixed provisional period does not work
Editorial and scholarly publication policies describe how to handle corrections and updates, not a standard period after which a claim automatically becomes definitive. The useful trigger is evidence—not the calendar. A qualification should remain as long as it accurately reflects unresolved evidence or interpretation; remove or revise it only when the support for doing so is strong enough.
Do not confuse a correction deadline or a record-retention period with the time a claim should remain provisional. Neither establishes a universal expiry date for the claim itself.

Decide whether the claim was wrong or the evidence changed
An error that existed at publication
If a factual error should have been recognized when the article appeared, correct the published record. The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) distinguishes such errors from later developments: “Matters of debate and evolving science and methods are not errors.” That distinction prevents a new understanding from being inaccurately presented as proof that the original publication was wrong.

New evidence or an evolving debate
When knowledge changes after publication, assess whether the article’s claim and qualification still represent the evidence. A development may warrant a dated update, a new publication, or a discussion of the debate rather than a correction of the original claim. ICMJE notes that matters of debate and evolving science are not themselves errors.
Assess evidence before changing the wording
Before removing a qualification or making a claim more definitive, check whether the evidence and its interpretation support that change. Science Feedback’s editorial standards recommend preferring primary sources where available, checking a central claim against more than one source when possible, and representing uncertainty in the scientific community without giving unsupported positions equal weight.

- Identify what new evidence or challenge prompted the review.
- Check whether the source is reliable and whether the evidence directly bears on the claim.
- Where possible, corroborate a central claim with another source.
- Represent genuine uncertainty fairly without making unsupported views appear equally credible.
Choose the right response after review
The appropriate action depends on the claim’s publication stage, whether the issue was an original error or later evidence, how much the article must change, and whether an investigation is complete.

Make substantive changes visible
For a meaningful post-publication addition, date the update and explain what changed. Science Feedback’s editorial standards say an updated review should state the date of the addition, where it appears, and a summary of the new information. For journal corrections, ICMJE’s Corrections and Version Control calls for a correction notice as soon as possible, detailing the changes and citing the original publication. ICMJE also describes version dates and archived versions as parts of maintaining the record.

A dated note helps readers distinguish a later update from what was originally published. Keep earlier versions archived or visibly marked when the platform allows. Cosmetic edits do not need the same treatment as changes that affect the claim or article’s meaning.
Flag serious unresolved concerns while investigating
When a serious concern cannot yet be resolved, readers should not be left to assume the claim has been verified or that an investigation is complete. An editor’s note or expression of concern can signal that an inquiry is underway. The eventual response—such as correction, republication, or retraction—depends on what the investigation establishes. Nature Portfolio describes interim notes and expressions of concern in its corrections, retractions and matters arising policy; the precise policy can vary by publication.

A practical policy for published claims
Editors can adapt this policy language to their publication: “We review published claims when credible new evidence, a substantive challenge, or a known factual error comes to our attention. We correct material errors promptly, date and explain substantive updates, and label serious unresolved concerns while investigating. We do not assign every claim a fixed provisional period; the appropriate status depends on the evidence and the significance of any new information.”
