Replace a Lenovo laptop battery when its runtime no longer meets your needs or Lenovo Vantage reports poor battery health. Age alone—and a single capacity percentage—does not establish that replacement is necessary. Check battery health, confirm the exact battery part for your laptop, and verify whether the battery is customer-replaceable before buying or attempting a repair.
What indicates that a Lenovo battery needs replacing?
Lenovo’s practical criteria are whether battery runtime still suits your needs and whether Battery Health in Lenovo Vantage reports poor condition. Lenovo does not set one replacement age or capacity percentage for every notebook. A battery that lasts less than it used to may still be usable if its runtime is adequate; conversely, poor health or an unacceptable runtime can justify replacement regardless of age. Lenovo’s Battery Q&A says typical users may notice reduced runtime after 12 to 18 months of consistent use, but describes this as a general observation—not a deadline. Actual results depend on use, environment, model, and the runtime you need.
Choose the next step based on symptoms

How to check Lenovo battery health and information
Check Lenovo Vantage
- Open Lenovo Vantage and go to My Device Settings.
- Open the battery details and review Battery Health and the other reported battery information. Menu wording and available details can vary by product.
Generate a Windows battery report
- Open Command Prompt or PowerShell in Windows.
- Run
powercfg /batteryreport. - Open the report at the file location shown by Windows. Compare Full Charge Capacity with Original Design Capacity, and review the battery history for context.
Do not treat the capacity comparison as a universal pass/fail test. Lenovo says Full Charge Capacity can be slightly above Original Design Capacity because of normal manufacturing variation; that difference alone does not indicate a fault. Lenovo’s Battery Q&A does not provide a universal percentage threshold at which every Lenovo battery should be replaced.

When should you reset the battery gauge?
Consider Lenovo’s Battery Gauge Reset when the health or remaining-charge reading changes unexpectedly, or the computer shuts down while the gauge still shows charge. A reset allows battery management to relearn Full Charge Capacity and can improve the accuracy of the remaining-time gauge. It cannot increase runtime or recover capacity lost through wear.

Lenovo describes a manual reset as charging the laptop to 100%, leaving it connected to AC for at least an hour, then discharging it to 5% or lower. Lenovo Vantage also provides a reset function on supported systems. Follow the instructions shown for your specific device.
Does battery age or charging behavior mean it has failed?
Age is context, not a replacement schedule
Lenovo’s 12-to-18-month estimate is about when typical users may notice shorter runtime after consistent use. It is not a guaranteed lifespan or a recommendation to replace every battery at that age. Use runtime and Vantage health to make the decision.

A charge level below 100% can be normal
A laptop that stays near 96–99% after reaching full charge may be behaving as designed. Lenovo says charging may not resume until the level falls below 95%, and some supported systems use other thresholds. Check Vantage’s charging settings before treating a charge ceiling as a defect.
Being plugged in does not automatically overcharge the battery
Lenovo says its laptops stop drawing charge when the battery is full and use protective charging behavior. Lithium-ion batteries also do not need to be fully discharged to maintain optimal runtime or performance.

How to identify the right replacement and decide who should install it
Lenovo batteries are model-specific. Before purchasing, use the laptop’s exact model or serial/product information to find its User Guide and identify the approved battery part. Match the product and part number; do not choose by brand name alone. Lenovo says its batteries are validated for compatibility, performance, and safety, and it encourages using a Lenovo notebook battery compatible with the particular model. It cannot verify compatibility or safety claims for non-Lenovo batteries.
Check the User Guide to determine whether the battery is a customer-replaceable unit (CRU). Some models have customer replacement instructions; others have built-in, non-CRU batteries. Lenovo advises that non-CRU batteries be serviced by authorized technicians. For built-in batteries, use a qualified technician unless you can carefully follow Lenovo’s model-specific instructions. If you replace the battery, Lenovo recommends checking for current BIOS/EC firmware and the Lenovo Power Management Driver for that specific product. Follow the model’s hardware maintenance manual and applicable warranty terms.
Check warranty before paying for a replacement
Lenovo’s Battery Q&A states a standard battery warranty duration of one year, while noting that upgrades and replacement plans may be available. Coverage depends on the product and region, so check the warranty details for your individual device before ordering a battery or arranging service.

Battery settings that can help limit unnecessary wear
For systems that remain connected to AC, Lenovo recommends setting the upper charge limit to 80% or less where the system supports that option. This is battery-care advice, not a diagnostic threshold: it does not show whether an existing battery needs replacement. Find the available charging options in Lenovo Vantage for your device. Lenovo says the limit can minimize unnecessary degradation and reduce abnormal swelling risk.
