Windows 8 “went gold” on August 1, 2012, when Microsoft announced that it had reached release to manufacturing (RTM). The milestone meant development and testing were complete and Microsoft had begun sending final code to PC makers. It did not mean Windows 8 was available to consumers: Microsoft set general availability for October 26, 2012.
What “going gold” meant for Windows 8
“Going gold” is an informal way to describe software reaching a final release milestone. Microsoft’s official term for Windows 8’s August 1 announcement was released to manufacturing (RTM). In its announcement, Windows Experience Blog author Brandon LeBlanc wrote, “Today, I am excited to announce that Windows 8 has been released to manufacturing (RTM)!”
Microsoft said product development and testing were complete and it had started handing final code to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Those partners could use the code to prepare Windows 8 PCs and other devices. RTM therefore marked the handoff to manufacturing preparation—not the date customers could generally buy or upgrade to Windows 8. Microsoft’s RTM announcement explains the milestone and its planned rollout.

RTM was not the consumer launch
The key distinction is between final code being handed to manufacturers and Windows 8 becoming generally available. Microsoft announced RTM on August 1, 2012, but said consumers could obtain the operating system starting October 26, 2012, either as an upgrade or on a new PC or device. The October date—not the RTM announcement—is the relevant answer if the question is when Windows 8 reached consumers.

Microsoft’s post also listed historical U.S. upgrade prices of $39.99 and a $14.99 offer for eligible Windows 7 PC buyers. Those were details of the 2012 rollout, not current offers.

“Goes gold” appeared in contemporaneous coverage as shorthand for the RTM milestone. Microsoft’s own wording was “released to manufacturing.” TechSpot’s same-day report used the “goes gold” framing, while Microsoft’s announcement is the primary source for what RTM meant and the planned access dates. TechSpot’s August 1, 2012 report reflects that headline terminology.
