Don’t assume a jar of gochujang is wheat-free—or gluten-free—just because it is gochujang. Recipes vary. Check the exact package’s full ingredient list and allergen statement; if you avoid gluten, look for a clear gluten-free claim or certification, since barley and barley malt contain gluten even though they are not wheat.
How to check a gochujang label
- Check the exact jar. Ingredients and claims can vary by recipe, market, package size, and batch. Read the package you plan to use rather than relying on the product name or an older online listing.
- Scan the ingredients and allergen statement for wheat. If you are avoiding wheat because of an allergy, use the package information relevant to that allergy and contact the manufacturer if an ingredient is unclear.
- If you avoid gluten, check beyond wheat. Look for barley, barley malt, malt, rye, and grain-containing fermented ingredients such as some soy sauces or seasonings. A statement identifying wheat does not by itself rule out barley or rye.
- Look for a gluten-free claim or certification when needed. Beyond Celiac advises checking ingredients or choosing a certified gluten-free product because gochujang recipes differ. Ask the maker about ambiguous ingredients rather than guessing.
Wheat-free is not the same as gluten-free
Wheat is one source of gluten, but it is not the only one. Barley—including barley malt—and rye contain gluten, so a product can have no wheat listed and still be unsuitable for someone avoiding gluten. Celiac Disease Foundation guidance describes the U.S. standard for products labeled gluten free as less than 20 ppm gluten; this is a U.S. labeling point, not a universal rule for every country.
For wheat allergy, celiac disease, and other reasons for avoiding gluten, the relevant label question is different. A wheat allergen declaration is not a complete gluten screen: the U.S. allergen rule described by the Celiac Disease Foundation identifies wheat as an allergen, but does not identify barley and rye as wheat allergens. Use the package and your specific dietary needs; seek medical advice for individualized guidance.

Barley malt and other grain ingredients
Some gochujang recipes include barley malt or other gluten-containing ingredients. Check for barley, malt, and grain-based sauces or seasonings in the full ingredient list, not just the allergen statement.
#1 Best Overall
- TWO FERMENTED PASTES, TWO DIFFERENT JOBS - Gochujang and Ssamjang: Gochujang is the chili paste you cook with: tteokbokki, bibimbap, marinades, stews. Ssamjang is the doenjang-based dip that stays on the table for lettuce wraps and grilled meat. Korean kitchens keep both because neither substitutes for the other. Available singly, in twin packs and as a set.
- REDUCED SUGAR, NO WHEAT FLOUR - Allulose and Meju: Both pastes are sweetened with liquid allulose rather than corn syrup, and both are built on traditionally fermented Korean meju soybean instead of wheat or glutinous rice flour used as thickeners. That is what keeps the body thick and the ingredient list short at the same time.
- SINCE 1965, THIRD-GENERATION KOREAN MAKER - HACCP Certified: It began with a grandmother in Sindangdong, Seoul in 1965 and is run today by the third generation of the same family, which holds a Korean patent for its reduced-sugar fermented paste process. Made in a HACCP-certified facility with Korean-sourced raw materials. No MSG added, no artificial preservatives, no artificial colors or flavors.
- CERTIFICATIONS: The ssamjang carries official Traditional Korean Food certification from Korea's Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, certification number 1065. The gochujang is certified by Sugarwise, the international sugar-claims authority. Both are registered marks rather than marketing phrases.
- 8.81 oz (250g) JARS - Storage and Ingredients: Store in a cool, dry place before opening. Refrigerate after opening and keep lids sealed to protect the ferment. Contains SOY. Contains SOY. Depending on the items in this set, may also contain FISH (anchovy), SESAME and WHEAT. Check each label before use. Product of Korea.
Glutinous rice
“Glutinous” describes the sticky texture of this rice; it does not mean the rice contains gluten. Beyond Celiac guidance says glutinous rice is safe for someone with celiac disease. Its presence alone is not a reason to reject a product for gluten avoidance.
“May contain” and shared equipment statements
Interpret precautionary statements in light of your own needs and the product information. There is no single rule here that applies to every person or product. If the package does not give enough information, ask the manufacturer.

- TWO THAT ACTUALLY GO TOGETHER - Gochujang and Ssamjang: This bundle pairs the cooking paste plus the table dip, which is the combination most people end up buying separately anyway. Gochujang goes in the pan. Ssamjang stays on the table for lettuce wraps and grilled meat. Between them you can cook a Korean dinner and set the table for it.
- REDUCED SUGAR ACROSS BOTH - Allulose, Not Corn Syrup: Regular Korean sauces lean on corn syrup and rice syrup for balance. Both items here are sweetened with liquid allulose instead, a low-calorie sweetener found naturally in figs and raisins. Same sweet-heat character, a fraction of the sugar load, on both sides of the bundle.
- WHERE THEY GO: Tteokbokki, bibimbap, Korean BBQ, lettuce wraps, ramen, rice bowls, fried rice, tacos, eggs, pizza, fries, dumplings, wings, tofu and roasted vegetables. Between the two you cover cooking and finishing, which is the gap most single-jar buyers run into a week after opening the first one.
- BUNDLE OF TWO - Storage and Ingredients: Store in a cool, dry place before opening. Refrigerate after opening and keep lids and caps sealed. Contains SOY. Contains SOY. Depending on the items in this set, may also contain FISH (anchovy), SESAME and WHEAT. Check each label before use. Product of Korea.
When the label is unclear
- Do not treat “no wheat listed” as proof that a product is gluten-free.
- Check the full ingredients, including sauces, fermented ingredients, and seasonings.
- Ask the manufacturer about an unclear ingredient or a mismatch between a product page and the jar.
- Recheck at purchase, because recipes and package claims may change.
