WhatsApp announced optional usernames in June 2026, allowing people to connect without initially sharing their phone number. Reservations opened before the broader launch, but reservation does not necessarily mean the feature is active on your account: WhatsApp says rollout is gradual and it will notify users when usernames are available in their country. Check WhatsApp in-app for availability.
When are WhatsApp usernames rolling out?
Meta said reservations began in June 2026 and that the feature would roll out gradually over the following months. WhatsApp’s FAQ also says availability is gradual and may not yet have reached every user. The company says it will notify people in-app when usernames become available in their country. That means reserving a name and being able to use it are distinct stages. Meta’s announcement
Twilio’s documentation estimated worldwide activation in September 2026, while cautioning that dates may change. That estimate does not establish universal availability. As of October 5, 2026, WhatsApp’s public announcement and FAQ still describe a gradual rollout; check your app rather than assuming the feature is live where you are. Twilio’s WhatsApp documentation
What does a WhatsApp username do?
A username is an optional way for someone to find or contact you without initially seeing your phone number. It does not replace the phone number required to have a WhatsApp account. WhatsApp says usernames must be unique and 3–35 characters long, using Latin characters, numbers, periods, and underscores. You can change a username, and it does not have to match your name, job, or title. WhatsApp recommends choosing one that is not easy to guess. WhatsApp FAQ

People need your exact username
WhatsApp says it will not provide a browsable username directory or suggested-name search. Someone contacting you for the first time must already know your exact username. A new-contact context card may show details such as the sender’s country and groups in common, so a username is not a promise of complete anonymity. Meta’s announcement
An optional username key adds a gate
You can require a username key as well as the exact username before a new contact can reach you through that handle. WhatsApp says you can reset the key to stop new contact through the username. This adds friction for unwanted approaches, but it does not verify who a person is after a conversation begins. WhatsApp FAQ

Can people still see your phone number?
WhatsApp says that when a person with a username enabled messages an individual or business for the first time, the recipient will not see that person’s phone number. The protection described is about initial contact through the username; it does not mean the account no longer uses a phone number or that a username guarantees anonymity. Meta’s announcement

Businesses using either the WhatsApp Business App or Business Platform can choose usernames. A customer may contact a business by username or phone number, subject to any username key the business has set. The visibility rule differs when the business initiates: WhatsApp says the business’s phone number remains displayed when it contacts a user. Business accounts also provide other identifying information, including verification signals. WhatsApp business FAQ

Consistent brand handle or less discoverable name?
Creators, small businesses, and organizations may claim an existing Instagram or Facebook username to keep a consistent identity across Meta services. WhatsApp says linking through Accounts Center verifies ownership of those handles. That consistency can make a business easier to recognize, but individuals seeking privacy may prefer a WhatsApp-specific handle that is less connected to a public profile. Meta’s announcement
Business Platform identifier changes
For Business Platform operators, Twilio’s integration guide describes business-scoped user identifiers (BSUIDs) and warns that some messages may not include a user’s phone number. It advises storing BSUIDs alongside existing identifiers so conversations can still be mapped. This is implementation guidance, not a guarantee that every business integration will behave identically; teams should review their own identifier and contact-matching workflows. How WhatsApp addresses impersonation risk
WhatsApp says owners can reserve their Instagram or Facebook usernames by adding WhatsApp to Meta Accounts Center. It also says it holds certain prominent names and variations, including names associated with public figures, celebrities, government entities, and Meta-verified accounts. Some terms associated with scams, such as “bank,” “government,” “police,” and “verified,” are blocked or restricted; WhatsApp says it may revoke usernames and ban accounts it believes are impersonating or scamming people. These are safeguards, not a guarantee that every lookalike name or scam will be caught. WhatsApp FAQ

TechCrunch reported on July 1, 2026, that India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology warned of risks including fraud, phishing, digital-arrest scams, and impersonation. Those were reported concerns, not a final legal finding or independent audit. TechCrunch also quoted Rachel Tobac, chief executive of SocialProof Security: “Ultimately, usernames are a great idea to avoid leaking your phone number to folks you don’t know, but it’s important to verify identity with the username function too.” TechCrunch’s report

How to use usernames more safely
- Choose a handle that does not reveal more personal information than you intend. A WhatsApp-only name may be less connected to your public identity than a reused social-media handle.
- Share the exact username only with the people you want to be able to find you; WhatsApp says there is no directory, but anyone who learns the handle can try it.
- Consider enabling a username key if you want an additional barrier to first contact, and reset it if you want to stop new contact through that handle.
- Verify claims from new contacts independently. If someone says they represent a bank or government office, WhatsApp advises calling the institution using a number on its website rather than trusting the message.
WhatsApp’s scale makes clear why both privacy and verification matter: The Associated Press reported in 2026 that the service had more than 3 billion users globally, while TechCrunch described India as its largest market, with more than 500 million users. Neither figure measures username reservations or access. The Associated Press TechCrunch
