An iPad is a tablet made by Apple; “tablet” is the broader device category. Apple sells several iPad lines, while other manufacturers make tablets with other software platforms. The real choice is between specific devices, their apps, accessories and ecosystems—not between two different kinds of hardware.
What does “iPad” mean compared with “tablet”?
“Tablet” describes a type of portable, touchscreen computer. “iPad” is Apple’s product name for its tablets. In other words, every iPad is a tablet, but not every tablet is an iPad. Tablets made by other manufacturers may use different operating systems, so check the software on the specific model rather than assuming all non-Apple tablets are alike.
Are all iPads the same?
No. Apple’s current product comparison lists four families: iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad and iPad mini. They differ in such things as screen size, features and available configurations; the word “iPad” alone does not identify a particular size, price or capability. For a dated example, Apple lists a 10.9-inch diagonal display for the iPad (10th generation), a 2022 model. That measurement applies to that model, not to the whole iPad range. Apple’s specification explains its display measurement conventions. Apple’s iPad (10th generation) technical specifications also list up to 10 hours of web browsing on Wi-Fi or video playback. That is Apple’s estimate based on pre-production devices tested in September 2022; actual battery life varies with settings, use, network and other factors, and the figure is not a guarantee for every iPad or tablet.

What changes when you choose an iPad or another tablet?
Operating system and apps
iPads run iPadOS. Other tablets use their own software platforms, and app availability depends on the device and platform. Start with the apps you need for work, school, communication or entertainment, then verify that they are available and work as expected on the exact model you’re considering.
Software compatibility and features are not identical across every iPad. Apple’s iPadOS information points to compatibility by device, and Apple notes that available features and apps can vary by model, region, language and carrier. Check the compatibility details for the exact iPad and software release rather than assuming every model has the same features.

Accessories
A stylus or keyboard can change how useful a tablet is for drawing, handwritten notes or typing. Compatibility is model-specific: do not assume every iPad works with every Apple Pencil or keyboard. Confirm that the accessory supports the exact device and generation before buying it. Apple’s comparison page lists model-specific support.
Connectivity
Some iPads are available with Wi-Fi only; others offer Wi-Fi + Cellular. Apple’s model information identifies those configurations, and its 10th-generation iPad specifications provide one model-specific example. Cellular service depends on carrier and network availability and may require a separate data plan. Check both the device configuration and the terms of service where you live.

How to compare two tablets before choosing
Compare particular models and configurations, not the labels “iPad” and “tablet.” Use this checklist:
- Apps: Confirm that the apps you rely on are available and supported on the device’s software platform.
- Price and storage: Compare the local price for configurations with the storage you need. A fair comparison uses current prices and similar storage, rather than a brand-wide assumption.
- Screen and portability: Check the exact screen size and device dimensions against how you plan to carry and use it.
- Connectivity: Decide whether Wi-Fi is enough or whether you need cellular access; check any plan and network requirements.
- Software compatibility: Verify the exact model’s compatibility with the software and features you need, including any regional limitations.
- Accessories: Confirm stylus and keyboard compatibility for the model and generation, not just the brand.
Which should you choose?
Choose an iPad if its iPadOS apps, compatible accessories and place in your existing Apple setup meet your needs. Consider another tablet if a particular alternative better fits your required apps, budget, preferred software or device configuration. There is no universal winner based on the category names alone; the useful comparison is between the exact models available to you.
