There is no single best sleep position for everyone. If you are generally healthy and sleep comfortably, you do not need to change positions just because one is often called the “right” way to sleep. Position can matter when you have snoring or sleep apnea, reflux, back or neck pain, or are pregnant—especially after 28 weeks.
How to choose a sleep position
For many otherwise healthy adults, comfort is a reasonable guide. Johns Hopkins Medicine sleep neurologist Rachel Salas says, “For young, healthy people, sleep position is less important.” The practical question is whether your position affects a particular symptom or health condition, not whether it wins a universal ranking.
Use the guidance below as a starting point, not a diagnosis or a substitute for care when symptoms are persistent or concerning.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you snore or may have sleep apnea
Side or stomach sleeping may help keep the airway open and reduce snoring or mild sleep apnea for some people, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) involves the airway collapsing during sleep and interrupting breathing.

A position change cannot establish whether you have OSA, and it should not be treated as a replacement for medical assessment or prescribed treatment. If you suspect sleep apnea, discuss it with a health professional.
If you have reflux or heartburn
Try sleeping on your left side rather than your right. Johns Hopkins notes that right-side sleeping can worsen reflux symptoms for some people, while the American College of Gastroenterology’s 2022 GERD guideline includes left-side sleeping among lifestyle measures.

Second and third trimesters
As the uterus grows, lying on the back can put its weight on the spine and back muscles. In the second and third trimesters it may also compress a major blood vessel, potentially causing dizziness or reducing blood flow to the fetus, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). ACOG says side-sleeping may be best during these trimesters and suggests pillows for support.

After 28 weeks
NICE advises pregnant women to avoid going to sleep on their back after 28 weeks and to consider pillows to help maintain their position. The recommendation concerns the position at sleep onset; it does not mean that briefly waking up on your back proves that harm has occurred.

NICE’s evidence review found a possible association between going to sleep on the back after 28 weeks and stillbirth, as well as small-for-gestational-age birth, compared with going to sleep on the left side. Its committee’s best estimate was that supine sleep approximately doubled the odds of stillbirth and trebled the odds of small-for-gestational-age birth. These are observational estimates, not an individual’s absolute risk or definitive proof that position causes those outcomes. The review did not find evidence of increased stillbirth likelihood for right-side versus left-side sleep onset.

- 【Most Comfortable Support】Our body positioner wedge pillow measures 20*9.8*6.1 inches and is ergonomically designed. It gives the body enough support, can be used for a long time, and is not easily deformed. The 30-degree slope is the most comfortable angle for your body, providing the best side sleeping position and allowing you to enjoy high-quality sleep from the wedge pillow.
- 【Skin Friendly & Anti-Slip】Our side wedge pillowcases are made of the most comfortable velvet fabric with a unique raised texture. The bottom is black fabric with anti-slip points, and the pillow core is made of high-density foam that is compressed when you receive the package. Please give it a few days to return to perfect condition.
- 【Medical Wedge Pillow】The body positioning wedge pillow is a great recovery partner and can be used in post-operative care. It helps patients turn over and provides better back support. Elevating the legs improves blood circulation in the legs and releases pressure on the back, lower back and legs.
- 【Pain Relief】It is often difficult to fall asleep when you are feeling unwell, so a wedge pillow will make you feel better. It is easier to fall asleep on your side than on your back, making it a good companion for side sleepers. It relieves back pain, sciatica, prevents and treats bedsores, and reduces pressure on the spine. Keeping the patient in a prone position prevents reflux.
- 【Easy to Clean】Our sleep wedge are equipped with invisible zippers for easy cleaning. The pillowcase is removable and machine washable. It is not recommended to wash the pillow core. It is recommended to keep it in a ventilated place to keep it fresh.
Why an earlier-pregnancy study does not cancel the later guidance
An NIH-funded study reported by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) in 2019 found no increased likelihood of adverse outcomes for women who mostly slept on their back or right side through 30 weeks, compared with other positions. More than 8,700 participants completed sleep-position questionnaires covering early pregnancy and weeks 22–29; a smaller device-recorded analysis included more than 400 women.
The study did not provide information about back- or right-side sleeping in late pregnancy after 30 weeks. Its findings therefore do not address the period covered by NICE’s recommendation after 28 weeks. NICE’s evidence review also cites a UK stillbirth rate of 1 in 244 births in 2018; that is historical context, not a current rate or a personal risk estimate.
Pillows may help with comfort or positioning, but NICE’s evidence review did not assess whether interventions that modify sleep position are effective. A pregnancy pillow should not be presented as preventing stillbirth or other complications.
Quick Recap
At a glance
| Situation | Position to consider | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Generally healthy, comfortable sleeper | Whichever position is comfortable | No universal winner; comfort is a reasonable guide. |
| Snoring or mild apnea symptoms | Side or stomach | May help some people; does not diagnose or replace care for OSA. |
| Reflux or heartburn | Left side rather than right | A positional measure that may help; results are not guaranteed. |
| Back or neck pain | Experiment with positions and pillow support | Effects vary; back-sleeping may help some lower backs and worsen some neck pain. |
| Pregnancy after 28 weeks | Begin sleep on a side, not the back | NICE recommendation based on a possible observational association; brief waking on the back is not proof of harm. |
