DZone’s 2024 forecast put generative AI and its effect on software development at the center of developer-community discussion. It also expected continued attention to security and privacy, programming languages, policies, and frameworks. Those were DZone’s predictions—not proof of what ultimately happened or a forecast of what matters most to every developer today.
What software development trends did DZone predict for 2024?
DZone’s central prediction was that conversations about generative AI and how it would shape software development would become a major topic in tech communities and beyond. The claim describes what DZone expected people to discuss; it does not establish how widely AI was adopted or what measurable effects it had.
DZone also expected security and privacy to remain concerns, alongside changes in programming languages, policies, and frameworks. Its article identifies these broad themes but does not prescribe particular security practices or name specific languages and frameworks as the next winners.
Why did generative AI stand out?
Survey responses published by SlashData help explain why AI was prominent in developer conversations at the time. In SlashData’s analysis of its Q3 2023 Developer Nation survey, 80% of surveyed developers agreed or strongly agreed that generative AI would increase their potential and productivity at work. That is an expectation reported in 2023, not a measured productivity gain from using AI tools. SlashData’s survey analysis

Views about job replacement were more measured than a simple claim that developers expected AI to take over their work. In the same survey analysis, 61% of architects and 55% of programmers disagreed or strongly disagreed that generative AI would surpass their skills and render their jobs obsolete. These are the views of respondents in particular roles at that time; they do not prove that job displacement cannot occur.
What topics interested DZone’s audience in 2023?
DZone reported that its own audience showed high interest in Java, JSON, microservices, code search, and Git, with Kubernetes among its top ten interests. These are signals about DZone’s readers, not a universal ranking of technologies among developers. DZone said it had over 9 million visitors in 2023, a figure about the publisher’s traffic rather than the size of the developer population. DZone’s 2024 prediction article
The article also reports that 89% of DZone’s audience sought professional development through online communities and 76% of average visitors described themselves as satisfied or very satisfied with DZone content. Its reported learning-format preferences were 92% for articles, 66% for Refcards, 60% for Trend Reports, and 52% for events. The format figures may overlap; they are not shares that should be added to make a whole.
DZone’s separate 2023 Community Research Report page says 63% of its global audience worked for North American companies, 60% reported significant influence on technology purchases, C-suite executives visiting DZone had grown by over 2x, and 90% preferred learning through online communities. These are publisher-reported audience findings; the page does not expose all survey methodology in the reviewed text.

What skills and technologies should developers keep up with?
The evidence supports a cautious, audience-specific takeaway rather than a universal skills checklist. DZone’s 2023 audience interests suggest that readers following its community were engaging with established programming and data formats, distributed architectures, code discovery, version control, and container orchestration. Its forecast adds AI, security and privacy, and ongoing language, policy, and framework changes as subjects to watch.
For an individual developer, the practical choice depends on role and workplace: follow changes that affect the systems you maintain, assess AI tools against your actual tasks, and keep security and privacy requirements in view. DZone’s prediction and community survey do not identify a single technology or skill that every developer should prioritize.

They are a dated forecast and a snapshot of audience attitudes and interests, not a retrospective evaluation. The SlashData responses describe expectations from its Q3 2023 survey, while DZone’s figures describe its reported 2023 community and visitors. These sources do not establish whether DZone’s predictions proved accurate in later years or describe developer attitudes in 2026.
