Apple’s September 2025 iPhone 17 announcement introduced four models: iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The main differences are their camera configurations and physical designs: iPhone 17 gets two 48MP rear cameras, the Pro models get three, and Air prioritizes a 5.6 mm titanium-framed design. These are Apple-announced specifications, not independent test results.
What changed across the iPhone 17 lineup?
The lineup is not one shared redesign with four sizes. Apple describes distinct camera systems and construction for the standard, Air and Pro models. The table summarizes the announced points most useful for comparing them.

How are the iPhone 17 cameras different?
iPhone 17: Main and Ultra Wide
Apple describes a 48MP Dual Fusion system made up of Main and Ultra Wide cameras. The company also says the system offers 2x optical-quality Telephoto capability. That wording describes an optical-quality framing option; it does not mean the phone has a separate third rear camera.

iPhone Air: one rear camera system
Air has a 48MP Fusion rear camera system, with 2x optical-quality framing described in Apple’s announcement. Its simpler rear-camera configuration is different from the dual-camera iPhone 17 and three-camera Pro models.
iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max: three rear cameras
Apple describes three 48MP Fusion cameras on the Pro models, including a new Telephoto. That gives the Pro family the broadest stated rear-camera configuration in this lineup. The launch material establishes the number and resolutions of the cameras, but does not independently demonstrate image quality or comparative performance.

Front cameras
Apple specifies an 18MP Center Stage front camera for Air and the Pro family. Its iPhone 17 announcement also highlights a Center Stage front camera, but the cited lineup material does not state an 18MP resolution for the standard model.
What is new about the designs?
iPhone Air is built around thinness
Apple gives iPhone Air a thickness of 5.6 mm and describes a grade 5 titanium frame. Its 6.5-inch display supports ProMotion up to 120Hz. Apple also describes a raised rear plateau that houses the camera, speaker and Apple silicon. The 5.6 mm figure is Apple’s stated specification, not an independent measurement.

The Pro models use an aluminum unibody
Apple describes the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max as having an aluminum unibody with a vapor chamber. This is a different construction story from Air’s titanium-framed thin design; “new chassis” does not mean all four phones share the same materials or layout.
iPhone 17’s display
Apple lists a 6.3-inch display with ProMotion up to 120Hz for iPhone 17. Its launch announcement also highlights improved scratch resistance, but that is a company claim rather than an independent durability result.

Which model’s announced features fit your needs?
- Choose iPhone 17 as the feature-balanced option to investigate if you want both Main and Ultra Wide rear cameras and a 6.3-inch ProMotion display.
- Consider iPhone Air if thinness and its titanium frame are your leading priorities, and one rear camera system suits your needs.
- Consider a Pro model if you want the stated three-camera rear configuration and the aluminum unibody design with vapor chamber.
- Compare Pro and Pro Max using verified model-specific specifications for the dimensions, weight, display, battery and other details that matter to you. The cited launch descriptions do not establish all differences between them.
Apple’s announcements do not establish real-world battery endurance or comparative value, so those questions cannot be settled from the launch specifications alone.

Apple announced accessories that are not interchangeable across the family by default. It named an iPhone Air MagSafe Battery, an iPhone Air Bumper and an iPhone Air Case with MagSafe, as well as cases for iPhone 17 and Pro models. A Crossbody Strap was announced for selected cases. Verify the exact phone and case compatibility in the current product listing before buying.
When did Apple announce the phones?
Apple announced iPhone 17, iPhone Air and the Pro models on September 9, 2025. A broader preorder announcement followed on September 11, 2025, and said preorders would begin September 12 at 5 a.m. PDT. Those are historical launch dates, not an indication of current availability.
Apple’s launch claims versus independently established results
Apple executive Kaiann Drance described iPhone 17 as a “big upgrade” and called its battery life “all-day”; those are Apple’s promotional characterizations, not controlled battery-test findings. Likewise, the camera resolutions, materials and measurements in this article are specifications and design descriptions published by Apple. They do not establish independent camera-quality rankings, actual endurance in a particular person’s use, current prices or present inventory.
