France’s latest high-school protests began in the Paris region on September 21, 2026, amid complaints about unfilled teaching posts and insufficient school resources. Students have also cited crowded classes, run-down buildings, demanding schedules and stress over Parcoursup, the university admissions platform. Public-sector strike action and a dispute over the proposed 2027 budget have widened the political debate, but reporting describes a varied movement—not a campaign shown to be centrally directed.
Where the protests began and how they spread
Le Monde reported that the current wave began at Saint-Exupéry high school in Créteil, southeast of Paris, where several teaching positions were unfilled. The protests spread around the Paris region and then to other parts of France. The exact sequence of that spread was unclear; Le Monde reported that authorities pointed to social media as one factor. The Union Syndicale Lycéenne’s president, Ryad Rani, said the union sought to broaden the action because the issues were present across the country.
The FCPE, a national parents’ federation, also dates the start to September 21. In an October 2 statement, it said the movement began with complaints about insufficient resources and that many of those concerns overlapped with issues raised by elected parent representatives.
What students are protesting
Accounts from journalists and student representatives describe a set of related but not identical grievances. The Union Syndicale Lycéenne’s demands, as reported by Le Monde, included staffing shortages, dilapidated high-school buildings, overcrowded classes, overloaded timetables and stress caused by Parcoursup. Students have also complained about staff absences they say are not covered. Some describe school days that run from about 8 a.m. into late afternoon.

- Conditions at school: Complaints include deteriorating buildings, crowded classes and, in some schools, specific issues such as mobile-phone restrictions or cafeteria food and portions.
- Workload and future prospects: Long schedules and pressure around Parcoursup, the platform used in France’s university admissions process, feature in reported demands.
These are reported complaints, not an independent audit of every school. The available accounts do not establish a representative nationwide measure of vacancies, building defects or student experience. At a Paris high school, 18-year-old Salama Gargouri told the Associated Press that protesters wanted to target “overloaded schedules, the system, the teachers, people who don’t listen to us, the university application process.” Her remarks illustrate one student’s view, not a survey of all participants.
Why the budget and staffing figures seem to conflict
The government emphasizes increased education spending and a falling school-age population. Critics point to reductions in teacher posts and say they constrain efforts to reduce class sizes. Those accounts use different measures; they should not be treated as direct rebuttals to one another.

The Ministry also forecast that, at the 2026 rentrée, public primary schools would average 21 pupils per class, which it called a historic low, and 6.24 teachers per 100 pupils, up from 5.46 in 2017. These are Ministry figures for selected primary-school indicators, not a description of every class or of high schools in particular.
Demographic figures need similar care. The Ministry says the school system will lose one million pupils between 2019 and 2029, and that public schools expect about 150,000 fewer pupils at the 2026 rentrée. Its separate September 2026 back-to-school communication reports 11.6 million pupils and 1.2 million education personnel, and says there are 161,000 fewer pupils this school year. It also projects a decline of 1.7 million pupils from 2025 to 2035. These figures refer to different periods and statements; they should not be combined into one estimate.

How a school dispute became a political confrontation
The protests coincided with public-sector strike action on September 29 and debate over the government’s proposed cost-cutting 2027 budget. That overlap put school complaints into a broader argument about public services, pay, government spending and France’s political direction. It does not establish that the strike caused the student movement.
As blockades and demonstrations unfolded, political arguments also focused on whether to prioritize students’ demands, access to schools and public order. Officials have said peaceful protest is legitimate while directing police to address violence and blockades that prevent access. Reports describe arrests, injuries, property damage, tear gas and allegations of excessive force; the details and totals vary by report and date as events develop. The response to protests has therefore become part of the dispute itself. Allegations that political actors orchestrated the movement remain allegations, not proof that a party created or controls it.

The FCPE said a motion warning against police repression of high-school students was adopted unanimously in the Conseil supérieur de l’Éducation on October 1, with 59 votes in favor. That is the federation’s account of the vote.

The reported grievances are specific to students’ experiences, and demands differ from school to school. National figures offer context but do not settle whether a given school has enough staff, suitable buildings or manageable class sizes. Nor do the accounts establish that every student shares the same priorities. What they do show is a movement that began around resource complaints and grew amid wider debate about public spending, education and the right to protest alongside the ability to attend school.
