Obsidian can do more than store notes: Canvas turns vault material into visual boards, Bases creates structured views of files, and Web Clipper and URI links help bring information into a vault from elsewhere. Plugins can add further capabilities. These features can support parts of a broader workflow, but they do not prove that Obsidian replaces every tool or workflow for every person.
How can you visualize ideas in Obsidian?
Use Canvas for spatial work
Canvas is Obsidian’s freeform space for arranging notes and other material. Obsidian describes it as an “Infinite space to research, brainstorm, diagram, and lay out your ideas.” You can place existing notes alongside images, PDFs, video, audio, and interactive web pages, then arrange those items by hand. That makes Canvas a fit for examples such as mapping a project, outlining an argument, arranging source fragments, or storyboarding.
Canvas files are stored locally in the open JSON Canvas format. Canvas views can also be embedded or nested. Its strength is spatial arrangement: you decide where items go and how they relate visually, rather than relying on a table or automatically filtered list. Obsidian Canvas documentation
Can Obsidian make database-like views of a vault?
Use Bases for property-driven organization
Bases creates structured views over content in your vault. It works with note properties stored in Markdown frontmatter, file properties available for files including attachments, and formula properties defined in a .base file. Views can use filters and ordering; the documented syntax also supports grouping and summaries. Formulas and filters share a syntax and built-in functions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For example, you could give reading notes status and topic properties, then make a filtered reading queue; or add project properties and create a view of active work. These are ways to organize your own vault, not claims that Obsidian provides a ready-made project tracker or that Bases has every feature of spreadsheet software. Unlike Canvas’s manually arranged board, Bases views are driven by properties and rules. Obsidian Bases documentation
How do you get web content and other actions into Obsidian?
Capture pages with Web Clipper
Obsidian Web Clipper is a browser extension for highlighting web pages and saving content into Obsidian. It offers a route from reading in a browser to keeping selected material in a vault, without making the browser itself the permanent home for that content. Obsidian Web Clipper documentation

Trigger actions with Obsidian URI links
The Obsidian URI scheme lets other apps or links open an existing note, create a note with supplied content, or search. On desktop, a URI can also specify a pane type. Actions involving daily notes or unique notes require the relevant plugins to be enabled. This can reduce manual navigation when another app needs to pass text into Obsidian, but the URI documentation establishes the actions available—not a particular integration or automation script. Obsidian URI documentation
Use the official CLI or extend the app with plugins
Obsidian’s help home lists a command-line interface for controlling the app from a terminal. Its existence makes terminal-driven control possible, but does not by itself establish what a specific script can accomplish. Plugins can extend Obsidian further; official developer materials describe TypeScript as the language for plugin development. Before depending on a community plugin for essential work, check its maintenance, permissions, and compatibility with your Obsidian version. Obsidian Help · Obsidian developer documentation

Which approach fits the job?
| Need | Obsidian feature | How it organizes work |
|---|---|---|
| Arrange ideas, media, and source notes visually | Canvas | Freeform, manually placed items |
| Sort or filter vault content by attributes | Bases | Property-driven views with filters and ordering |
| Save selected web content | Web Clipper | Browser capture into Obsidian |
| Open, create, or search notes from elsewhere | Obsidian URI | Actions triggered through URI links; some depend on enabled plugins |
| Control the app from a terminal or add custom behavior | CLI or plugins | Terminal control or plugin-dependent extensions |
A practical way to choose is to follow the shape of the task: use Canvas when relationships are easier to see on a board, Bases when properties should drive a view, and capture or automation features when information or an action starts outside Obsidian. A workflow built on native features and local files has different dependencies from one that relies on a community plugin, an enabled plugin, or an external integration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need Sync or Publish to use these features?
No. Obsidian’s core application is described on its pricing page as “Free without limits”; Sync and Publish are optional paid services with separate purposes. Sync is for keeping vaults synchronized across devices through an off-site remote vault. Obsidian’s setup guide recommends a separate backup system and explicitly warns that a sync service is not a backup. Publish makes selected notes available on the web; neither service is required for Canvas, Bases, Web Clipper, or URI actions.
