An MCP server can give a watsonx Orchestrate agent a defined set of tools to call. In IBM’s factorial example, the agent handles the conversational request while a tool performs the exact calculation. That division of work makes the idea of “agentic AI” concrete: the model interprets and coordinates; the tool carries out a bounded operation.
IBM’s hands-on tutorial demonstrates the workflow with the watsonx Orchestrate Agent Development Kit (ADK): build an MCP server, validate its tools locally, import them, create an agent that uses them, and test the result. It is a useful example of how the pieces fit together, not evidence that MCP by itself guarantees correctness, security, or portability across implementations.
What changes when an agent can call an MCP tool?
Without a tool, an agent’s answer is produced from the model’s interpretation and generation. With a tool, the agent can pass a request to an external capability and use the result in its response. MCP supplies an interface for exposing and calling such tools; the server implements the operation.
In IBM’s example, the user asks for a factorial value or the number of digits in one. The agent interprets that request and selects a tool; the factorial server performs the calculation. This is a clearer division of responsibility than asking a language model to generate a result that should be exact. It does not mean every task should be delegated to a tool: the tool must exist, be available to the agent, and be suitable for the requested operation.

IBM Developer’s “Connecting to MCP tools with watsonx Orchestrate”, by Ahmed Azraq and Moises Dominguez Garcia and dated 17 December 2025, walks through this factorial demonstration using the ADK.
How the demonstrated integration works
The tutorial’s sequence is practical rather than abstract. It first makes the server and its tools, then checks that they work independently before introducing the agent. That separation helps distinguish a server problem from an agent instruction or tool-selection problem.

- Create the MCP server and tools. The example server exposes factorial-related operations.
- Test the tools locally. IBM’s tutorial uses MCP Inspector to list the example tools and run them. Confirm that the server exposes the expected tools and returns sensible results before connecting it to an agent.
- Import the tools into watsonx Orchestrate. The import makes the server’s capabilities available for agent use.
- Create an agent with a bounded role. The example describes an agent that provides precise factorial values or digit counts. A specific scope helps the agent know which requests belong to its tools.
- Test the agent. Try requests that map directly to each tool and check that the agent chooses the right operation and presents its result accurately.
The full walkthrough and its example implementation are in the IBM Developer tutorial. IBM also has a learning-path page on connecting to MCP tools.

Local testing and remote import are different parts of the job
A local validation flow and a remote server connection solve different problems. Local testing checks that the server and tool behavior work in isolation. A remote setup makes a server reachable by the Orchestrate environment and requires the connection and authentication configuration appropriate to that deployment.

| Consideration | Local validation in the tutorial | Remote import in IBM documentation |
|---|---|---|
| Where the server runs | Locally for testing, using the tutorial’s example. | A server reachable at a configured URL; exact deployment details depend on the environment. |
| How it is reached | The tutorial uses MCP Inspector to list and run tools locally. | IBM’s documented example specifies a server URL and streamable_http transport. |
| Connection and credentials | Local tool validation precedes importing into the agent environment. | IBM documents creating and configuring a connection and setting credentials before importing; requirements depend on the server and environment. |
| Import operation | The tutorial demonstrates importing the example MCP tools into watsonx Orchestrate. | The ADK route uses orchestrate toolkits import with MCP-related options. |
IBM’s remote integration documentation describes installing and initializing the ADK, configuring a connection, setting credentials, and importing a toolkit. Its example includes --kind mcp, a server URL, --transport "streamable_http", tool selection, and an app ID. Treat this as the documented example, not a universal command to copy unchanged: authentication, options, and syntax can vary, and ADK instructions may change. Check the current documentation for your deployment before running an import.
Why tool descriptions and agent scope matter
Making tools available does not, on its own, tell an agent when or how to use them. The factorial tutorial makes the intended scope legible: provide precise factorial values or digit counts. Tool descriptions and agent instructions should similarly clarify the operation, its inputs, and the kinds of requests it should handle.

- Intel Core i7-6700TE Processor – High-speed performance for demanding applications.
- Windows Embedded 7 – Reliable OS for industrial and surveillance applications.
- 128GB SSD System Drive – Fast and efficient boot and application loading.
- 1-Bay Storage Capacity – Expandable storage (disks not included) for additional data needs.
- Multiple Display Outputs – HDMI, DVI, and DisplayPort for flexible monitoring.
Testing should include both a straightforward request for each tool and a request outside the agent’s stated scope. The first checks whether the agent can select and use the intended capability; the second helps expose whether its instructions leave room for unsupported behavior. A successful factorial example demonstrates the wiring, not the suitability of the same design for a system with different data, permissions, or consequences.
What MCP does not settle
The example shows an interface and a workflow; it should not be read as a blanket assurance about the properties of every MCP server or deployment. The server’s implementation, its authentication, the tools exposed, and the way the agent is instructed all matter. An agent can only use the capabilities made available to it, and an integration still needs appropriate operational and security controls for its setting.

There are also product-specific details to check. IBM’s remote integration documentation notes a Presto-specific case: data-asset queries may require system instructions that enable the LIST_DATA_ASSETS and QUERY_DATA_ASSETS tools. That requirement applies to the described Presto scenario, not to every MCP integration.
Where to look for available assets and other workflows
watsonx Orchestrate’s Discover catalog includes agents, MCP servers, tools, and apps. What an individual can access may depend on organizational usability settings, so catalog visibility and availability are not necessarily identical for every user. See IBM’s documentation on discovering the catalog.
IBM separately documents scheduling agents and workflows through direct MCP tools. That is a distinct use case from importing an MCP server’s tools for an interactive agent: it covers programmatic scheduling for scenarios such as unattended pipelines and integrations that need structured input. The documented flow requires an IAM bearer token and the relevant agent or workflow UUID, and includes MCP session initialization. It is not a required step in the factorial tutorial; details are in IBM’s direct MCP scheduling documentation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When this pattern is useful
The factorial example is intentionally narrow, but the architectural lesson applies when an agent needs to invoke a capability that is better handled by an explicit tool than by generated text. The useful question is not whether an agent can call tools in general; it is whether a particular operation is clearly defined, reachable, and appropriate to delegate.
Quick Recap
- Use a tool when the agent needs a defined operation or external capability, and the server can provide it.
- Keep the agent’s role and each tool’s purpose explicit so tool selection is understandable.
- Validate the server locally before troubleshooting the agent connection.
- For remote imports, verify transport, URL, credentials, permissions, and current ADK syntax against the relevant IBM documentation and your environment.
- Test the complete interaction, including requests the agent should not handle.
