Does Core isolation slow down your PC? It can, but there is no supported universal percentage for the slowdown. The effect depends in part on your processor: Microsoft says older CPUs that emulate certain execution features have a bigger performance impact. For most people, the practical answer is to weigh any effect on their own workload against the kernel-protection benefit and possible driver or app compatibility issues.
What Core isolation does—and what Memory integrity adds
Core isolation is a section in Windows Security for protections that isolate core Windows processes in memory using virtualization. It is not a single performance feature. One of its settings, Memory integrity, is also known as hypervisor-protected code integrity (HVCI).
Memory integrity runs kernel-mode code integrity in a virtualization-based security (VBS) environment and restricts certain kernel memory allocations. The goal is to help protect Windows’ kernel code-integrity process and make it harder for malware to exploit the kernel or use low-level drivers to take control of a PC. Microsoft explains the feature in its VBS and HVCI documentation and its Core isolation support guide.
Memory integrity is one protection within Core isolation, not a synonym for every feature on that page or for all of VBS. The controls shown can vary with Windows version and installed hardware.

How much performance can it cost?
Microsoft does not give a current, general slowdown percentage for overall system performance across different PCs and workloads in the guidance cited here. It says the impact is greater on older processors that emulate the relevant execution features through Restricted User Mode. That is a qualitative warning, not a percentage or benchmark.
Processor support matters. Microsoft says Memory integrity works better with Intel Kaby Lake and later processors that support Mode-Based Execution Control, and AMD Zen 2 and later processors with Guest Mode Execute Trap. Older processors rely on emulation and have a bigger performance impact, according to Microsoft Learn.

Your workload matters too. A person doing ordinary everyday tasks may not perceive the same effect as someone focused on gaming or another performance-sensitive task. However, the Microsoft guidance cited here does not quantify a difference between those workloads. Treat performance as something to assess on your own PC, rather than assuming a published FPS or productivity penalty applies to it.
Performance is only one part of the trade-off
Memory integrity’s purpose is kernel protection, so turning it off to chase performance removes a security safeguard; it is not a cost-free optimization. Compatibility is a separate concern from speed: Microsoft warns that some drivers and applications may not work with the feature. In some cases, a malfunction or, rarely, a boot failure can result.

If Windows identifies an incompatible driver, first check with the device manufacturer for an updated compatible version. If none is available, Microsoft says you may need to remove the device or application that requires it. For instability or a critical boot error after enabling Memory integrity, use Windows Recovery Environment troubleshooting guidance from Microsoft Learn.

Check the setting and decide for your PC
- Open Windows Security, then go to Device security > Core isolation details.
- Find Memory integrity and check whether the control is available and whether the feature is on. The options shown depend on your Windows version and hardware.
- If you plan to enable it, confirm that hardware virtualization is enabled in your UEFI/BIOS. Microsoft lists this as a requirement in its Core isolation support guide.
- If Windows reports an incompatible driver, look for a compatible update from the device maker before deciding whether to remove the related device or app.
- For a performance-sensitive PC, judge the effect against your own workload and the protection you would give up by disabling the feature. Do not assume a general slowdown figure predicts your result.
