The largest count in the available record is 9 million units, but it was a 2000 initiative involving old chest freezers from multiple manufacturers—not a recall of household refrigerators. For refrigerators specifically, the largest count supported here is about 1.6 million Maytag units in a 2009 recall. The ranking below uses the number of affected units, not reported injuries. The available evidence verifies five leading entries, not nine, so the remaining four are left out rather than guessed.
What were the biggest refrigerator recalls?
The figures below come from independent indexes based on U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recall data, not an official CPSC ranking. Fridge.com’s record was measured October 1, 2026; Home Recall Watch’s index was refreshed the same day. Counts may describe different kinds of cooling appliances, so product scope matters.
| Rank by stated count | Recall and announcement date | Affected units | Product scope | CPSC notice |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Multi-manufacturer initiative, October 24, 2000 | 9,000,000 | Chest freezers manufactured before 1970 | 01016 |
| 2 | Maytag, March 10, 2009 | About 1,600,000 | Household refrigerators | 09-145 |
| 3 | Frigidaire, July 24, 2025 | 634,000 | Mini fridges | 25-395 |
| 4 | Frigidaire, February 8, 2024 | 383,240 | Refrigerators | 24-110 |
| 5 | Frigidaire, June 2, 2022 | 367,500 | Refrigerators | 22-143 |
The first entry is a broad, multi-manufacturer chest-freezer initiative, not a single refrigerator model or brand recall. Fridge.com’s account of CPSC notice 01016 says the old freezers’ latches could trap children inside. For household refrigerators alone, Maytag’s 2009 recall is the largest count established in these records. The Frigidaire mini-fridge entry is included because broad refrigeration records include mini fridges, even though they are not full-size refrigerators.

How many refrigeration recalls have been recorded?
Fridge.com counted 40 refrigeration recalls in its tracked CPSC record spanning March 1977 through January 2026. That record combines refrigerators, freezers, mini fridges, and related cooling appliances. Thirty notices stated a unit count; those stated counts add up to 13,466,528 units. Ten notices did not state a count, so that figure is not a complete total of all affected units.
The same compilation listed 25 brands, with Frigidaire appearing in four notices. These are historical notice counts, not a comparison of current products’ safety or reliability. Injury and death totals are not consistently established across the recalls, so they cannot support a comparable severity ranking. CPSC describes NEISS as a probability sample for estimating product-related emergency-room injuries; it is not a refrigerator-recall injury tally.

How do I check whether my refrigerator was recalled?
- Find the product label. Locate the rating label on the refrigerator or freezer and record its model, serial number, and any date code.
- Compare every identifier. Check the exact model and any serial or date-code ranges named in the recall notice. A matching model name alone may not mean your unit is covered.
- Confirm coverage in the CPSC notice. Independent indexes can help you find a recall, but use the official notice to determine whether your unit is included and what to do. The CPSC provides recall resources and data tools at CPSC Data.
- Follow the notice’s instructions. Use the remedy and safety steps stated for that specific recall. A repair listed in a notice is not permission to attempt a DIY fix or substitute another procedure.
Home Recall Watch maintains an independent refrigerator recall index with recall information and model numbers. Treat it as a lookup aid and verify any possible match against the relevant CPSC notice.

What should I do if my refrigerator is on a recall list?
Read the official notice for the exact affected models, hazard, interim safety directions, and remedy. Recalls can call for different actions, such as a repair, refund, or replacement; the remedy in one notice does not apply to another. In a subset of 19 notices with a structured remedy in Fridge.com’s record, 13 listed repair, four refund, and three replacement. That subset does not represent every recall or every remedy.

For a recent example, Home Recall Watch’s summary of the 2026 Galanz retro-refrigerator recall reports about 121,680 affected units and 34 incident reports, including one fatality. It says the affected models and date codes are specific and directs consumers to unplug and stop using covered units pending a free in-home repair. Because instructions and coverage can change or depend on the exact model, check the CPSC notice for recall 26-649 before acting.
